Directed by Dario Argento

This special limited edition spot gloss slipcover (designed by Suspiria Vilchez) is limited to 6,000 units and is only available on our website and at select indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them.
In Rome, Inspector Anna Mari receives a macabre surprise for her birthday when an email lands in her inbox from someone calling themself “The Card Player”, and claiming to be the one responsible for the recent kidnapping of a British tourist. In a sadistic twist, the kidnapper challenges the authorities to a game of online poker to determine whether the young woman lives or dies. When the Police Commissioner forbids his team to go through with the game, the maniac brutally slaughters the tourist before their very eyes via webcam, later dumping the body in a river. As more and more women are abducted from the streets of the Italian capital and subjected to the same treatment, Anna Mari joins forces with Irish policeman John Brennan and young poker whizz-kid Remo in an attempt to beat The Card Player at their own deadly game.
A later giallo offering from the master of the form, Dario Argento’s (Deep Red, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage) THE CARD PLAYER takes all the familiar trappings of the genre and plants them firmly in an early 2000s milieu, complete with a fittingly pulsing, contemporary electronic score by Claudio Simonetti (Suspiria, Tenebrae). Co-scripted by regular Argento collaborator Franco Ferrini (Phenomena, Demons) and featuring gruesome corpse special effects from Sergio Stivaletti (Cemetery Man), Vinegar Syndrome is delighted to present THE CARD PLAYER in its world UHD debut, newly restored in 4K from the original camera negative and loaded with a full deck of both new and archival extras.

Yongary, Monster from the Deep
⍟ Vinegar Syndrome ⍟
| VS-506 CASE |

Directed by Kim Ki-duk
Starring: Yeong-il Oh, Jeong-im Nam, Lee Soon-jae, Moon Kang, Kwang Ho Lee

Earthquakes are causing havoc throughout Korea and it’s no simple seismic mayhem, but instead the mythic monster Yongary emerging from the earth! After nuclear testing awakens the giant monster presaged in Korean folklore, Yongary threatens to level the country, breathing fire and stomping entire buildings. Only scientist Il-Woo, with the help of his girlfriend’s prankster kid brother Icho, can figure out how to slow down the terrible Yongary, who gobbles up petroleum products and only appears to be growing stronger. The seemingly powerless army considers using guided missiles against Yongary, potentially demolishing ancient historical landmarks in order to save lives, all in the hope of stopping his fiery path of destruction.
Considered one of Korea’s first giant monster epics, YONGARY, MONSTER FROM THE DEEP is a vital and original take on the genre, with an expertly handled monster, a healthy dose of humor, and even a clever touch of sentiment shown towards the monster itself. It also boasts masterful special effects crafted by the legendary Keizô Murase (Mothra, King Kong vs. Godzilla, Gamera, etc.) himself, character stories built around Il-Woo and Icho, and utterly exquisite miniature work. This kaiju classic and long-time staple on regional U.S. TV has something for everyone, including a jaw-dropping rock ‘n roll dance sequence! The folkloric monster team at Vinegar Syndrome is proud to bring you this beloved creature classic, newly restored in 4K and finally featuring the surviving fragments of its original Korean language version.

The Nick Millard Action Collection
⍟ Vinegar Syndrome ARCHIVE ⍟
| VSA-055 |
1977-1985 | 318 min (combined) | 1.33:1 | English Mono
Directed by Nick Millard
Starring: Marland Proctor, Irmgard Millard, Nick Millard, Gary Boyd, Albert Eskinazi, Priscilla Alden, Barrett Cooper
THE NICK MILLARD ACTION COLLECTION is part of our Vinegar Syndrome Archive collection, celebrating forgotten cinematic oddities from the video store era. This collection was inspired by our own brick & mortar video stores, with locations in Bridgeport, CT, Denver, CO, Toronto, ON, and Pittsburgh, PA (opening soon!).
Unique to this line, each hand numbered limited edition release will come fitted in a specially designed, bottom loading VHS inspired slipcase, while also including a double-sided poster.
These releases will ONLY be available on our website and at participating indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them. This spot gloss slipcase edition (designed by Luke Insect) is strictly limited to 5,000 units and and includes a 40-page perfect bound book. This release may (but probably not) be followed by a standard edition in the future.
After a hefty career making oddball erotica, followed by the brain-melting one-two punch of the horror classics Criminally Insane and Satan’s Black Wedding, director Nick Millard helmed an increasingly bizarre series of low-budget action thrillers, combining his trademarks of stolen international locales, sureally mismatched footage, demented dialogue, and some of the fastest-cut shootouts in cinema history. Welcome to THE NICK MILLARD ACTION COLLECTION. Presented here are all five of Millard’s shot-on-film action, thriller, and caper features, newly restored from their original negatives and featuring a new documentary on the life and films of Nick Millard.
.357 MAGNUM (1977, 68 minutes) – Millard’s action debut follows assassin John Hightower as he attempts to take down a rival hitman who has gone on an unhinged rampage. Fearing that he’s not up to the task, he enlists the help of his mentor to train him to become the ultimate killing machine. The most ambitious of Millard’s low-fi epics, shot on location throughout Asia, this clever caper offers an abundance of bloody shoot-outs, all the way through to its twist-filled conclusion.
ALCATRAZ BREAKOUT (aka Alcatraz 1313-0) (1978, 58 minutes) – Due to his successful escape attempts at other facilities, maximum security prisoner 1313-0 has been sent to Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary. While his wife and young daughter hope for his parole, he plots his most daring escape yet. Filled with sneakily stolen footage shot at Alcatraz, this was Millard’s final theatrically released feature film.
ONE-ARMED WARRIOR (aka The Terrorists) (1980, 55 minutes) – James Luke is assigned the case of tracking a group of German terrorists who have been responsible for a series of brutal attacks. But when he discovers a plot to assassinate the President of the United States on an upcoming international trip, he’s in a race against time to foil the deadly plan. Between typically absurd action set pieces and an abundance of location footage, this was Millard’s final international mini-epic.
STREET RACE (1981, 71 minutes) — Once celebrated race car driver John Ryan is now in a crisis. His love for racing, while unchanged, is now being betrayed by his aging body, which may no longer be up to the task. Sensing his decline, a younger racer vies to steal his spotlight. Millard’s attempt at a serious, character-driven drama pits actual race car driving against more nuanced and thoughtful character development. Long thought lost, and one of the “longest” films he made, STREET RACE features great international racing footage, from California’s Grand Prix of Long Beach to the French Riviera’s famous Formula 1 races..
SHOTGUN (aka Gunblast) (1985, 66 minutes) – Career criminal Roy Grant has spent his life in and out of prison, but his latest attempt to go straight is quickly foiled when a mysterious woman enlists his help to steal a fortune’s worth of drugs and money. After pulling off the heist, the two embark on a getaway road trip, but danger is following them everywhere. A more “conventional” crime thriller than one would expect from Millard, this was his final feature edited entirely on film and offers plentiful action and surprises throughout.

Henry Graham (Walter Matthau, The Bad News Bears), a descendant of a wealthy New York family, has exhausted his inheritance, leaving him near penniless, much to the dismay of his uncle Harry (James Coco, Murder By Death), who refuses his request for a loan. Upon suggestion of his valet driver Harold (George Rose, The Flesh and the Fiends), Henry devises a plot to marry wealthy professor Henrietta Lowell (played by writer/director Elaine May) and murder her, becoming the beneficiary of her fortune. Along the way, Henry faces various obstacles, including unexpectedly falling in love.
The first feature film to be written and directed by noted playwright and comedian Elaine May (Mikey and Nicky, Ishtar), A NEW LEAF is a calling card of the highest order. Showcasing May as a triple threat, behind and in front of the camera, and offering a canvas for her rapid fire, often acerbic, humor that would define her work. Nominated for two Golden Globe Awards in 1972 – Best Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical) and Best Actress for Elaine May – and adopted into the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress in 2019, A NEW LEAF is one of the great American comedy films of the 1970s and is often cited as the crowning achievement of May’s illustrious, albeit often controversial, career. | VSL-018 SLIP |
Paramount | 1956 | 81 min | 1.37:1 | English Mono
Directed by Cy Roth
Starring: Anthony Dexter, Susan Shaw, Paul Carpenter, Jacqueline Curtis, Harry Fowler, Sydney Tafler
Welcome Vinegar Syndrome Labs (VSL) to the VS Sub-Label family! As with each of our sub-labels we are hoping to expand and defy expectations with the diversity of films we restore and release. As the name implies, VSL will serve as a kind of testing area for releasing genres and eras of film that one might not immediately expect to come from VS. The ultimate objective of VSL will be to see if these types of films will find an audience, and if so, pursue and release more of them…and even if not, still serve as a means of restoring more of the weird, rare, and unusual movies you might not expect from Vinegar Syndrome.
This special limited edition spot gloss slipcover (designed by Robert Sammelin) is limited to 3,000 units and is only available on our website and at select indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them.
In a secret space mission, a joint team of US and UK rocketmen hurtle into space to explore the thirteenth moon of Jupiter. Enshrouded in both fog and mystery, only this moon has the potential to sustain life as we know it. Upon landing, these five explorers encounter not only the remnants of Atlantis, but over a dozen nubile maidens and their “father” Prasus. Eager to launch New Atlantis but without enough men to help populate the society, Prasus is overjoyed to receive these male guests. While the rocket crew can hardly believe their good fortune, this lunar paradise is regularly menaced by a surly monster known only as The Creature, and trusting Prasus may lead to their deep space doom! A cheery relic of genre film past, FIRE MAIDENS OF OUTER SPACE is a delirious classic of 1950s sci-fi, when only a vague concept of astronomy and the lure of women alone could fill the right kind of theater. American Cy Roth (Combat Squad) wrote, produced, and directed this British production with fellow American Anthony Dexter (The Phantom Planet, Valentino) playing team leader Luther Blair. Also featuring Paul Carpenter (Intent to Kill, The Unholy Four) as the ship’s captain and Susan Shaw (Blonde Blackmailer, Carry On Nurse) as Hestia, the maiden who’s caught Blair’s eye and just may help the team return to Earth. Vinegar Syndrome Labs proudly presents this beloved atomic age romp on Blu-ray in a new 4K scan and restoration.

A group of military personnel have been assembled to, they believe, locate and disarm old active explosives which have been left unattended at a former army testing site on a remote island. But when they arrive at the deserted island, they soon discover that something doesn’t seem quite right about their mission. Soon enough, they uncover a strange concrete block which, after accidentally blowing up, unleashes an indestructible, bloodthirsty alien being which will stop at nothing to kill them. Richard Streeb is a brooding artist whose work dwells on grisly depictions of death and dismemberment. Shortly after the unveiling of his most recent exhibition, Streeb’s preoccupation with the macabre bleeds horrifyingly into real life when the artist is attacked in his own home by a black-clad, knife-wielding figure. After being stabbed multiple times before the eyes of his helpless wife, Streeb is dragged off into the night by his assailant. With the authorities proving ineffectual, and the mysterious killer striking again and again – targeting victims all tied to the artist – it falls to Streeb’s brother Bill to mount his own investigation in an attempt to unravel the meaning behind these slayings.
A loving homage to the films of Dario Argento and Mario Bava, director Joseph F. Parda’s micro-budget 5 DEAD ON THE CRIMSON CANVAS (1996) – produced by and starring B-movie stalwart Joe Zaso (Nikos the Impaler) – may well lay claim to being the only shot on Super-8 giallo to emerge from Long Island, NY. Featuring a black-gloved killer right out of the likes of Blood and Black Lace and The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, and offering up plentiful bare skin and grisly deaths – including gouged eyes and faces stripped bare by piranhas – Degausser Video is thrilled to unveil 5 DEAD ON THE CRIMSON CANVAS on Blu-ray, newly restored from the best existing tape master and loaded with a host of new and archival extras.

Directed by Michael and Roberta Findlay, Ron Sullivan
Starring: Yoko Ono, Val Avery, Glen Nielson, Roberta Findlay, Mary St. Feint, Sean Laney, Jon Woods, Alou Mitsou, Claire Adams
From nudies to roughies to ultra weird regional curiosities, the sexploitation world welcomed any filmmaker working in any genre, so long as the limits of nudity and sex on screen were pushed as far as they could go – but never all the way. DISTRIBPIX, one of the legendary names in the genre (and whose extensive library will be the backbone of this line), will offer single, double, and even triple feature Blu-rays highlighting works from every corner and crevice of softcore smut, from the dawn of nudie cuties to the all-but-hard 70s, with plentiful lost and never on disc films along the way.
This special limited edition Blu-ray comes with a spot gloss hard slipcase + slipcover combo (designed by Richard Hilliard), includes a 40-page perfect bound book, and is limited to 2,000 units. It is only available on our website and at select indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them.
Crime, kidnapping, white slavery, ritualistic cults, and other sordid activities were all fodder for the most outlandish roughies of the 1960s. Produced primarily in New York by a mix of budding filmmakers and “legit” craftspeople moonlighting in the seedier areas of cinema, these trashy tales became the bedrock of what later exploitation features would take in even more extreme directions. Distribpix Inc. + Something Weird offer the Blu-ray debut of a notorious pairing of two of the most twisted such efforts, both newly restored in 4K from their 35mm original camera negatives!
In SATAN’S BED, a pre-fame Yoko Ono stars as Ito, a young Japanese woman who arrives in New York to reunite with her husband, only to discover he’s gotten mixed up in a life of drugs and crime. Meanwhile, a gang of strung out dope fiends unable to satisfy their kicks, kidnap and torment beautiful women. A truly twisted mutant film which combines an unfinished hard boiled crime drama with a nasty sexploitation thriller, this Michael & Roberta Findlay effort offers one sick surprise after another.
In SCARE THEIR PANTS OFF, innocent young women are being drugged and kidnapped off the streets of Manhattan, only to awaken in a mysterious dark room where they are tormented by hideously deformed creatures…or are they? Combining a sex-cult oriented nudity with a crime thriller, and touches of oddball humor, this truly unique sleaze pic was the sole directing effort from John Maddox and was produced by the legendary Ron Sullivan (aka Henri Pachard).

Christina Lindberg (Thriller – A Cruel Picture) is ANITA, a teenage nymphomaniac who feels compelled to seduce every man she meets; students, hippies, businessmen and bums. Traversing time, space and genre, Argentinian filmmaker Lisandro Alonso (Jauja) presents an elliptical meditation on the experiences of indigenous communities across the Americas. Opening in a dusty town of the Old West, reality soon transitions to contemporary South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Reservation before finally landing in the jungles of 1970s Brazil. As the triptych unfolds, each temporal and spatial shift provokes metaphysical questions about colonial influence on native peoples and the ever-present tensions between indigeneity and the Western world. Featuring three-time Academy Award nominee Viggo Mortensen, EUREKA is a graceful refraction of history and place, marking it Alonso’s “most expansive and ambitious film to date” (Screen Anarchy).

This label is focused on the country’s original cinematic boom years – spanning the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s – occasionally venturing past that period (and the country’s borders) to highlight the films of Canada’s most inspired actors and filmmakers. While shooting a news report on a Montréal heatwave, TV cameraman Cliff Reynolds (The Rowdyman’s Gordon Pinsent) unintentionally films Jerry Cuozzo (Scanners co-star Lawrence Dane), a recently-escaped convict hiding from police and his former criminal associates on the heels of a rogue heroin deal. With the help of Barbara (Day for Night’s Alexandra Stewart) and Gabriella (Vampire Circus’ Domini Blythe), Jerry schemes to fake his own death, while offering large sums of money to Cliff to hand over his film and help deliver the drugs – with lethal consequences.
Created for the National Film Board of Canada’s Filmglish series – which produced serialized feature films to help teach English as a second language – The Heatwave Lasted Four Days went on to become a surprise hit on American TV as part of ABC’s Wide World of Mystery. Almost entirely unavailable in the decades since its original release, this lost neo-noir classic is offered here in three distinct versions, alongside additional films from director Douglas Jackson, including his award-winning The Sloane Affair.

We value meeting the diverse needs of film lovers, educators, activists, and service providers, as well as challenging audiences, and programmers, with original creative films. In 1988, after years living abroad, renegade filmmaker Robert Kramer returns. “Back,” he emphasizes. Not “home.” To try to understand the country as it is, he decides to travel the entire length of Route 1, from the Canadian border to Key West, filming all the way. His companion on the trip is Doc—ostensibly Kramer’s friend, a brooding physician back after a harrowing decade working in Africa. But in fact, he’s a fictional character played by actor Paul McIsaac, a compassionate man who readily engages those he meets, from business owners, to factory workers and to army recruits.
For a road movie, ROUTE ONE/USA features few shots of the open road itself. Instead, we are treated to a series of stops along the way—an Indian reserve in Maine, Walden Pond, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC, a Georgia diner, Thanksgiving dinner at a homeless shelter, and evangelical churches that preach the “truth” about the anti-apartheid movement and the dangers of Disney. There are plenty of characters along the way too, and appearances by televangelist Pat Robertson and Jesse Jackson, as they campaign for president.
It’s not just the people who make the film though. Kramer has an extraordinary eye for people, patterns, and industrial processes (you’ll never look at Monopoly or tinned sardines the same way again), and his visuals shine through in this beautifully restored edition.
Though shot decades ago, ROUTE ONE/USA feels remarkably contemporary in its portrayal of many of the racial, social, and economic challenges America continues to face.

Welcome to Shari: a small town, located on the easternmost part of Japan’s northernmost island, Hokkaido, in the Shiretoko Peninsula where the Sea of Okhotsk meets Russian shores. Here, we meet hunters and bakers who love venison a few ways; expert flying squirrel enthusiasts and a collector known for his “Hall of Hidden Treasures”. At the heart of it all is the conspicuous absence of drift ice and fish in this crucial winter season. Meanwhile, the Red Thing, a yeti sanguine “like a throbbing blood clot” rampages through the scenery where folklore blossoms from man and nature converging – the latter now skipping a beat.
Nao Yoshigai (whose spectacular short films have charmed festival audiences across the world, including at Cannes’ Director’s Fortnight with Grand Bouquet) makes her feature debut with Shari, a remarkable experimental documentary bringing the viewers to one of Japan’s most secluded and magnificent areas. Like Yoshigai’s short works – which straddles the line between documentary, dance film, and fantasy – Shari is multifaceted: part introspective travelogue, part exploration of myth and legend, part climate change diary and artful in situ intervention. It offers a unique viewpoint into a place and people rarely captured on film and advocates for the future of Japan’s far-flung areas, uncertain in a warming world.

After innocent, straight edge skater Paul is taunted and murdered by a carload of drunken longhairs, he is crudely resurrected by a mysterious, pot-smoking mad scientist as a masked, sword wielding psychopath with a horrifying facial skin graft and a skateboard bolted directly to his foot. Determined to enact bloodthirsty revenge on his killers and their cohorts, Paul marauds through the parking lots, warehouses, and house parties of Gainesville in a splatter fueled cacophony of homespun gore, psychedelic drugs, ‘80s skate punk culture, abrasive stock footage, and gobs of raspberry soda.
Initially envisioned as a document of the thriving underground music scene in Gainesville, Florida (as well as a cinematic adaptation of his self-published, DIY fanzine Twisted Tissues), Twisted Issues marked the SOV feature debut of visionary writer / director Charles Pinion (Red Spirit Lake, We Await) and announced the arrival of a singular and electrifying new voice within the video underground. A lo-fi explosion of raw creativity and youthful exuberance, Twisted Issues remains one of the quintessential, regional SOV masterpieces of the 1980s; an experimental, cinema verité slasher film like no other that Film Threat magazine notoriously dubbed one of the top “25 underground films you must see”!

Brimming with magical realism, sensuality, and humor, the final film by revered filmmaker Shohei Imamura is “an enlightening, even liberating, experience” (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times) that tells the story of Yosuke Sasano, an unemployed salaryman who arrives in a remote fishing village following a rumor of hidden treasure. Instead, he meets Saeko Aizawa, a charming and unusual woman with a unique problem: a well of warm water inside her longing for release. Saeko faces both shame and adoration for her condition, which the local anglers believe feeds the river and its fish. Intrigued and enamored, Yosuke decides to take up a new life as a fisherman. Through their passionate affair, Imamura paints a picture of longing, fantasy, and the search for true happiness in the most unexpected of places that’s both “nonchalantly freaky and uncommonly pleasurable” (Michael Atkinson, The Village Voice).

Evoking the spirit of ’80s grindhouse cinema, Watch Them Come Blood initially focuses on a group of road tripping friends trailing after a public pervert who leads them to a very peculiar brothel… until a few other players are thrown into the mix. Co-scripted by DIY director Mike Cuenca and producer Joaquin Dominguez, this non-linear story transforms into an exquisite corpse of cinema—a collaborative collage where horror, black humor, indie romance, and post-punk aesthetics coexist. The film doesn’t just pay homage to its influences; it absorbs and reinterprets them, resulting in a piece that’s as unpredictable as it is entertaining, balancing absurdity with genuine suspense.

Invited to a lavish garden party at a massive country estate by a mysterious host, Linda is quickly chatted up by a wanna-be cowboy, Roy. After the two sneak into the property’s manor house, hoping to find a spot for a quick tryst, they end up discovering something far more intriguing: a mysterious stag film from the 1920s, starring a very old man. After returning to the party, Linda is soon approached by party’s suave and dashing Darrin Blue, who invites her on a drive and begins to share his incredible life story, from encounters with gangster molls in the 30s through to hippie freak outs in the 60s. But what is Darrin’s secret to remaining eternally youthful? Where Hollywood leaves off, TAKE OFF takes it all off, in acclaimed director Armand Weston’s (The Nesting, Defiance of Good) hilarious pop culture pastiche. Combining elements of Oscar Wilde’s “Picture of Dorian Gray” with well played satires of some of the 20th century’s most beloved and important films and historical events, TAKE OFF stars Wade Nichols (Barbara Broadcast, TV’s Edge of Night), Annette Haven (SexWorld), Leslie Bovee (Lustful Feelings), Eric Edwards Firestorm), and also features a guest appearance from Andy Warhol Superstar, Holly Woodlawn.
