All We Imagine As Light
Criterion Premieres is a selection of new theatrical films presented on Blu-ray and DVD, released in association with the Criterion Channel.
Criterion | 2024 | 110 min | Not Rated
Directed by Payal Kapadia
Payal Kapadia’s acclaimed fiction-feature debut is a radiant ode to hope-giving connections forged amid big-city anonymity. Set against the hypnotic luminescence of Mumbai, All We Imagine as Light follows three very different women working at the same hospital—Prabha (Kani Kusruti), Anu (Divya Prabha), and Parvathy (Chhaya Kadam)—each contending with personal and material struggles amid a modernizing India riven by gentrification and rising Hindu nationalism. When Parvathy is evicted and forced to move back to her childhood village, Prabha and Anu travel with her to the seaside, where they shake loose their remaining secrets and—in one otherworldly sequence—a lingering ghost. Winner of the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, All We Imagine as Light is a deep-rooted study of the fortifying power of friendship, propelled by moving performances and the director’s compassionate eye.

Carnal Knowledge (#1270)
Criterion | 1971 | 98 min | Rated R
Directed by Mike Nichols
Amid the sexual revolution and social upheaval of the early 1970s, acclaimed director Mike Nichols delivered a zeitgeist-defining examination of American mores. Sharply written by Jules Feiffer, this acerbic drama flashes through more than twenty years in the lives of two college buddies (Jack Nicholson and Art Garfunkel) whose casual chauvinism is all fun and games—until it’s not. As the women who suffer and see through the friends’ insecure posturing, Candice Bergen, Ann-Margret, Rita Moreno, Carol Kane, and Cynthia O’Neal form an extraordinary ensemble that gives the film its soul. So controversial it became embroiled in an obscenity case that went all the way to the Supreme Court, Carnal Knowledge remains startling for its unnervingly frank look at postwar masculinity.

You Can Count On Me (#1271)
Criterion | 2000 | 111 min | Rated R
Directed by Kenneth Lonergan
Celebrated playwright Kenneth Lonergan first brought his rich, humanist vision to the screen with this soulful look at the complexities of a sibling relationship whose roots are as knotted as they are deep. Years after Sammy (Laura Linney) and her younger brother, Terry (Mark Ruffalo), lost their parents in a car crash, small-town single mother Sammy is plunged into another crisis when the troubled, adrift Terry comes home for what turns out to be an extended stay—one that could either bring them closer together or tear them apart. With infinite grace and his peerless ear for dialogue, Lonergan offers something all too rare on-screen: beautifully flawed human beings whose journeys offer achingly relatable insight into what changes when you grow up—and what doesn’t.

Directed by George P. Cosmatos
Fresh from the global success of Rambo: First Blood Part II, Sylvester Stallone and director George P. Cosmatos re-teamed for the iconic 80s action-thriller Cobra, this time waging a one-man crusade against crime on the streets of Los Angeles. A crazed killer. A woman in danger. A city in fear. Lt. Witness to a bloody murder, Ingrid Knudsen (Brigitte Nielsen) finds herself a target and is placed under Cobretti’s protection. But repeated attempts on her life lead Cobretti to believe it’s not just the work of one lone psycho wreaking bloody havoc across LA, but a murderous cult with plans for a new world order. Danger: Diabolik
Kino Lorber | 1968 | 105 min | Not Rated
Directed by Mario Bava
The suave, psychedelic-era thief called Diabolik (John Phillip Law, Barbarella, Death Rides a Horse) can’t get enough of life’s good—or glittery—things. Not when there are currency shipments to steal from under the noses of snooty government officials. And priceless jewels to lift from the boudoirs of the super-rich. The elusive scoundrel finds plenty of ways to live up to his name in this tongue-in-cheek, live-action caper inspired by Europe’s popular Diabolik comics. He clambers up walls, zaps a press conference with Exhilaration Gas, smacks a confession out of a crime lord while freefalling with him from an airplane, and pulls off the heist of a twenty-ton gold ingot. Impossible? No, diabolical—Danger: Diabolik, to be exact! And it’s slickly produced by the legendary Dino De Laurentiis (Orca, King Kong), directed by the Godfather of Cult Cinema, Mario Bava (Planet of the Vampires), features a super-swinging score by the maestro Ennio Morricone (The Good, the Bad and the Ugly), co-starring Marisa Mell (Masquerade), Michel Piccoli (Max and the Junkmen), Terry-Thomas (The Green Man) and Adolfo Celi (Largo of Thunderball).

Silent Scream
Kino Lorber | 1979 | 87 min | Rated R
Directed by Denny Harris
What silent terror lies within the walls of a gloomy old Victorian mansion by the sea? Unable to get housing on campus, young co-ed Scotty (Rebecca Balding, The Boogens) finds a vacancy at the Engels’ mansion, now a boarding house for college students. Mrs. Engels (Yvonne DeCarlo, TV’s The Munsters) and her son seem nice enough, but it soon becomes clear to Scotty that something is not right at her new residence. When her fellow boarders begin to get brutally butchered, two detectives (comedian Avery Schreiber and The Toolbox Murders’ Cameron Mitchell) must solve the mystery of the Engels’ boarding house before the body count rises. Written and produced by Ken and Jim Wheat, the creative team behind Nightmare on Elm Street 4, The Fly II and Pitch Black, and featuring horror icon Barbara Steele (Black Sunday, The Crimson Cult) in an unforgettable role, the bloodcurdling Silent Scream was one of the most successful, stylish and subversive independent horror movies of the slasher era.

Mr. Peters’ Pets / Everybody Loves It / 50,000 B.C. Before Clothing
(KINO CULT #33)
Kino Lorber | 1962-1964 | 3 Movies | Rated R
Directed by Peter Perry Jr. & William Rose
One of the silliest (and perhaps stupidest) “adults only” features of all time was Peter Perry Jr.’s Mr. Peters’ Pets, which employed the classic formula of the so-called Nudie Cutie film: the naked female form is presented in the least objectionable way, usually seen through the eyes of a harmless male goofball. Alfred Hopson stars as a pet shop owner who transforms himself into a variety of cuddly animals, thereby gaining entry into the boudoirs of his shapely female clients. Also featured in this collection are two bonus films mastered from vintage 35mm prints: the time travel fantasy 50,000 B.C. and the MAD Magazine-style TV parody Everybody Loves It, narrated (believe it or not) by a four-leaf clover. Filled with cringe-inducing comedy and devoid of genuine eroticism, the Nudie Cutie was a short-lived phenomenon, but has become a beloved relic of the collapse of Hollywood censorship.

The Nightwatch Collection
Arrow | 1994-2023 | 2 Movies | 220 min | Not Rated
Directed by Ole Bornedal
Years before Nordic Noir took the TV world by storm with such hits as The Killing and The Bridge, writer-director Ole Bornedal had already put the genre on the map with Nightwatch, an unforgettably nail-biting thriller and the breakout film of both Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones) and Kim Bodnia (Pusher). Law student Martin (Coster-Waldau) works as a night watchman at the morgue to help fund his studies, while a spate of grisly murders is shaking Copenhagen. His newfound nightly duties and friendship with the devil-may-care Jens (Bodnia) put a strain on his relationship with his girlfriend Kalinka (Sofie Gråbøl, The Killing). But when inspector Wörmer (Ulf Pilgaard, Borgen) begins to suspect he may be behind the killings, Martin must race to find the real killer and clear his name. Set thirty years after the first film, Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever sees Martin’s daughter Emma (Fanny Leander Bornedal, The Bridge) following in his footsteps working nights at the Copenhagen morgue to understand the events that shook her father so deeply. But a new series of murders begins in a twisted echo of the past, and Martin must face his trauma head on and team up with Emma to stop history from repeating itself. Full of captivating performances and foreboding suspense, Nightwatch and Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever represent the high watermark of Nordic Noir and are a must-have for any genre film aficionado.

Winner of the Camera d’Or at the 1979 Cannes Film Festival, Northern Lights is one of the most moving and committed works of political cinema from the late 1970s. Dramatizing the formation of the populist Nonpartisan League in North Dakota in the mid-1910s, Northern Lights captures the plight of immigrant Dakotan farmers as they toil and struggle against the combined forces of industry and finance. Amid this paroxysm of class tension, two young lovers find themselves swept up in the tide. Shot on location (on grain-rich black-and-white 16mm) in the dead of winter and featuring an astonishing cast of non-professional actors, this handmade masterpiece remains a stirring monument to collectivity. The 4K digital restoration of Northern Lights was created by IndieCollect and Metropolis Post in collaboration with directors John Hanson and Rob Nilsson.

Rosa la rose, fille publique
Radiance Films | 1986 | 87 min | Not Rated
Directed by Paul Vecchiali
On the streets of Paris, Rosa ‘la rose’ (Marianne Basler, Va savoir) is the belle of Les Halles. With no shortage of clients, she is beloved by her fellow working girls and spoiled by her pimp Gilbert (Jean Sorel, Belle de Jour). For her, this is a charmed life – that is until her 20th birthday arrives. Across the floor, she locks eyes with Julien (Pierre Cosso, An American Werewolf in Paris), a blue-collar worker who sees something deeper beyond her fun-loving façade. Almost Shakespearean in its execution, Paul Vecchiali’s underseen drama explores class consciousness and female sexuality with startling precision. Anchored by a magnetic central performance from the then 20-year-old Marianne Basler, Rosa la rose, fille publique is a true hidden gem.

The Tattooed Dragon
Eureka Entertainment | 1973 | 98 min | Not Rated
Directed by Wei Lo
Written and directed by Lo Wei, the man behind the Bruce Lee’s international hits The Big Boss and Fist of Fury, The Tattooed Dragon was designed to bring martial arts superstar Jimmy Wang Yu (The One-Armed Swordsman) to a global audience still hungry for kung fu cinema in the aftermath of Lee’s death. Featuring Sylvia Chang (Slaughter in San Francisco) and James Tien (Shaolin Boxer) in a villainous role, it follows The Big Boss in pitting a legendary fighter against organized crime.
Wang Yu stars as the eponymous Tattooed Dragon, a virtuous martial artist who makes a habit of defending the defenceless. After he is injured in a fight, he is taken in by a farmer (Samuel Hui, The Swordsman) and his sweetheart (Chang), and soon finds himself having to defend their local village when it becomes the target of a gangster (Tien) and his crew. Determined to lay their hands on the village’s rich resources, the gangsters install a casino and encourage the locals to gamble away everything they have. But the Tattooed Dragon has other ideas…
The Tattooed Dragon is a showcase for Jimmy Wang Yu following his move from Shaw Brothers to Golden Harvest in the early 1970s, boasting cinematography by Cheung Yiu-tsou (Police Story) and stunts coordinated by Simon Hsu (The Flying Guillotine). Eureka Classics is proud to present The Tattooed Dragon for the first time on Blu-ray anywhere in the world from a new 2K restoration.
