JAMES FOLEY
December 28, 1953 – May 6, 2025 (71)
Born: Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, New York
I mostly knew James Foley as the guy who directed the Fifty Shades sequels—but looking deeper into his filmography, it’s clear he had a much richer, more versatile career. He worked with legends like Gene Hackman, directed Madonna at the height of her fame, and helped launch Mark Wahlberg into leading-man territory. Foley moved fluidly between genres—thrillers, dramas, horror, even a bit of sci-fi—and always brought a sharp, grounded perspective to his work. Funny enough, he originally set out to become a doctor before shifting paths and studying film at USC. It was there that filmmaker Hal Ashby took notice of his student work, and just like that, Foley found himself working in Hollywood. His career spanned decades, and while not every film was a hit, his body of work reflects a filmmaker who took chances, explored characters, and left his mark. He won’t be forgotten.
