The Ques and the Capulets have been engaged in a years-long rivalry, which has fostered such a vicious feud that they’ve each forbidden their children from having any contact with those of the other. When lovable and smut-obsessed slacker Tromeo Que and his friends decide to sneak into a lavish party being hosted by the chaste and proper Juliet Capulet, the two fall in love at first sight. Realizing that they must keep their passion for each other secret, especially as Juliet’s father has pledged her as a bride to a meat-obsessed business associate, their forbidden love threatens not only to destroy their families but also begins causing mayhem and bloodshed all around them.

The first of director Lloyd Kaufman’s (The Toxic Avenger) official adaptations of William Shakespeare, TROMEO & JULIET is a wild, punk reimagining of The Bard’s eternal doomed romance, only with non-stop gore, nudity, and giant mutant genitals! Set amongst the denizens and outcasts of squalid New Jersey, standing in for a modern vision of Verona, and featuring a screenplay co-written by soon-to-be major director in his own right, James Gunn (Slither, Guardians of the Galaxy) TROMEO features scream queen Debbie Rochon (Cyber Vengeance), Sean Gunn (Super, Superman) in his on-screen debut, music superstar Lemmy (Motörhead), and Will Keenan as Tromeo. Vinegar Syndrome is proud to bring this funny, gross, altogether unpredictable, and incredibly moving love story for the ages to UHD and Blu-ray, exclusively restored in 4K from its original camera negative and presented in its director’s cut, along with hours of new and archival extras.

In 1930s Florida, mobster Nicky Rocco is gunned down by his own gang in front of his mistress, Ruby Claire, who turns out to be carrying his child. Almost two decades later, Ruby – once a songstress with dreams of stardom – is living out a quiet existence with her daughter Leslie, now a mute 16-year-old, in a large house adjoining a drive-in, which she runs alongside Nicky’s old gang members. When, one by one, the former mobsters start winding up dead in various bizarre and gruesome ways, a parapsychologist, Dr. Paul Keller, arrives on the scene to investigate. Upon witnessing a series of unsettling supernatural occurrences, he begins to suspect that Nicky is meting out revenge from beyond the grave against those who betrayed him while using his own teenage daughter as the conduit…

A commercial high point in the career of prolific director – and devout genre fan – Curtis Harrington (Night Tide, The Killing Kind), 1977’s RUBY sought to capitalize on the then-popular trend of possession movies which came in the wake of The Exorcist, while amping up old Hollywood nostalgia and unexpected gore amongst plentiful scenes of supernatural mayhem. Starring Piper Laurie in the titular role, fresh from her Academy Award-nominated turn in Carrie, alongside Stuart Whitman (The Comancheros, The Mark) and Roger Davis (TV’s Alias Smith and Jones), RUBY at long last arrives in its UHD world premiere courtesy of the drive-in deviants at Vinegar Syndrome, restored in 4K from its 35mm interpositive and loaded with a wealth of new and archival bonus features.

In late nineteenth-century Paris, esteemed surgeon and talented sculptor Dr. Georges Bonnet is hiding an extraordinary secret – many years ago, he discovered the key to eternal life. Despite being 104 years old, he has the appearance of a man in his mid-30s. However, this incredible feat comes at a terrible cost, for every 10 years, Bonnet must undergo a surgery which requires the parathyroid gland of a living victim. When it becomes clear that his old friend and collaborator Professor Ludwig Weiss is no longer capable of conducting the surgery as he had previously, Bonnet kidnaps his old flame Janine Dubois in an attempt to coerce her new love interest Dr. Pierre Gerrard into taking up the task.

A joint venture between Paramount Pictures and Britain’s legendary Hammer Film Productions, who had just scored massive international hits with The Curse of Frankenstein (1957) and Dracula (1958), 1959’s THE MAN WHO COULD CHEAT DEATH saw director Terence Fisher return to the helm alongside writer Jimmy Sangster. With performances from Hammer stalwart Christopher Lee and Hazel Court (The Curse of Frankenstein) – whose topless scene fell foul of the UK censors, alongside a few seconds of the film’s fiery climax – Vinegar Syndrome is thrilled to present THE MAN WHO COULD CHEAT DEATH fully uncut for the first time on home video, newly restored in 4K for its world UHD premiere and stacked with new bonus features.

A series of grisly murders are taking place across the Italian city of Turin, prompting the authorities to fear that a copycat killer is on the loose and emulating a gruesome spree that occurred seventeen years prior. Those murders were pinned on a writer with dwarfism by the name of Vincenzo de Fabritiis, who subsequently passed away, effectively closing the case. Now, Detective Ulisse Moretti, who led the original investigation, finds himself drawn out of retirement, and, together with the young Giacomo Gallo – whose mother was a victim of the supposed “Dwarf Killer” – attempts to unravel the mystery of these new slayings as the mutilated corpses continue to pile up.

Returning to the atmosphere and themes of his landmark giallo Deep Red (1975), 2001’s SLEEPLESS saw the welcome return of horror maestro Dario Argento (Suspiria, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage) to the subgenre with which he had made his name. Starring Max von Sydow (The Exorcist) and featuring a host of splatterific, Grand Guignol set pieces courtesy of practical FX wizard Sergio Stivaletti, together with a pulse-pounding score by Argento regulars Goblin – who reunited especially for this movie – Vinegar Syndrome is thrilled to bring SLEEPLESS to UHD for the very first time, restored in 4K from the original camera negative and accompanied by a host of both new and archival bonus features.

VICE ACADEMY 1-6 is part of our Vinegar Syndrome Archive collection, celebrating forgotten cinematic oddities from the video store era. This collection was inspired by our own brick & mortar video stores, with locations in Bridgeport, CT, Denver, CO, Toronto, ON, and Pittsburgh, PA. Unique to this line, each hand numbered limited edition release will come fitted in a specially designed, bottom loading VHS inspired slipcase, while also including a double-sided poster.

These releases will ONLY be available on our website and at participating indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them. This spot gloss slipcase edition (designed by Haunt Love) is strictly limited to 5,000 units and and includes a 40-page perfect bound book. This release may (but probably not) be followed by a standard edition in the future.

On the grimy streets of working-class Hong Kong, some merely scheme to get out, and someone has returned to exact savage vengeance. After a cop is killed in cold blood, detectives Qui and Zhou begin tracking a trio of lowly ex-cons plotting a jewel heist. The hoods hope to land a score that’ll finally allow them to leave town, while the cops are chasing a corporate kingpin active in the heroin trade. Meanwhile, a steely yet inconspicuous hitman has arrived from Thailand, eager to take out that same kingpin for having crossed him. While chasing down leads from gun dealers and drug pushers, the police repeatedly encounter these various criminals as the desperation mounts. In a race across smoky gambling dens, cheap love hotels, seedy bars, and dingy warehouses, who will make it out of town alive?

Combining elements of gritty Eurocrime with a jolt of Michael Mann style, MEN FROM THE GUTTER is a crime thriller bursting with powerfully realistic violence. Only the second film directed by Ngai Choi Lam (Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky), it exhibits astonishingly sharp technique in a riveting story that never lets up. This sorely overlooked entry from the Shaw Brothers’ waning years relies on cleverly alternating plotlines to showcase a wide variety of brutal action, all to a throbbing synth-heavy score. Starring Michael Miu Kiu Wai (The Legend of the Condor Heroes), Lo Meng (Five Deadly Venoms), Parkman Wong (The Killer), and a jaw-dropping, stunt-heavy performance by Jason Pai Piao (The Chinese Boxer), Vinegar Syndrome Archive is proud to bring to the surface this raw, sunken gem, newly restored from its original camera negative.

  • Region A Blu-ray
  • Newly scanned and restored in 2K from its 35mm original negative

An arranged marriage between gypsy clans goes awry when Spiro (Michael V. Gazzo, The Godfather Part II) refuses to sell his daughter to the self-proclaimed King of the Gypsies, King Zharko Stephanowicz (Sterling Hayden, The Long Goodbye), ending in a hail of bullets and a kidnapped daughter. In the following decade, Rose (Susan Sarandon, Thelma & Louise), kidnapped daughter, and her husband Groffo (Judd Hirsch, Ordinary People) have a young adult son named Dave (Eric Robers, Star 80) who has rejected the gypsy ways of his family, despite his grandfather, King Zharko, passing his leadership onto the unwilling scion. Dave’s refusal sparks a turbulent war within his own family and the larger gypsy community in 1960s New York City.

Written for the screen and directed by Academy Award Winning screenwriter Frank Pierson (Dog Day Afternoon), King of the Gypsies is adapted from the novel of the same name, written by Peter Maas (biographer of Frank Serpico and author of The Valachi Papers). Featuring stunning, on location, photography by noted Swedish cinematographer and Ingmar Bergman collaborator Sven Nykvist (Persona, The Tenant) as well as in incredible ensemble cast, including the screen debut of Eric Roberts, King of the Gypsies is a long overlooked entry in the cinema of New York City in the 1970s. Cinématographe is proud to present the world 4K UHD debut of Frank Pierson’s somber urban drama in a new restoration from its original camera negative.

Runaway Train: or, The Story of My Life So Far

Written by Eric Roberts with Sam Kashner

In this brutally candid memoir, Academy Award and Golden Globe nominee Eric Roberts pulls no punches about the ups and downs of his career and his sometimes stormy relationship with his famous sister, Julia.

Eric Roberts grew up in Georgia, spending most of his teens away from his mother and sisters, Lisa and Julia. Instead, he stayed with his controlling father, a grifter jealous of his early success. At age 17, Eric moved to New York to pursue acting, where he worked and partied with future legends like Christopher Walken, Mickey Rourke, John Malkovich, Bruce Willis, and Robin Williams.

His big break came when he was cast in King of the Gypsies. Eric became one of the hottest stars of the era, starting an affair with actress Sandy Dennis, working with Bob Fosse on the critically acclaimed Star 80, and earning an Oscar nomination for Runaway Train. But for Eric, Hollywood came with a dark side—an ocean of cocaine that nearly swept him away, culminating in a car accident that almost cost him his life.

Eric is open about the seriousness of his addictions and their devastating effect on his career. He reveals the reasons behind his complicated relationship with his sister, Julia, and his daughter, Emma, a successful actress in her own right. Now, happily married to actress and casting director Eliza Roberts, who helped him confront his demons, he is revered among his peers as the ultimate actor’s actor.

Written with New York Times bestselling author, for years a Vanity Fair contributing editor, and current Air Mail writer-at-large Sam Kashner, this is a powerful memoir of a Hollywood legend.

Having fled the scene, Eddie is taken away by his mother to live in solitude at a remote cabin. Twenty years later, Tophill State College’s Sigma Phi fraternity are desperately trying to raise some cash, so they decide to throw a raucous fundraiser party for their peers. In the midst of the festivities, a mysterious figure arrives at the door, offering them the key to the old abandoned Burber house and suggesting that they turn it into a haunted house. Seizing the opportunity, the youngsters quickly set about transforming the property into an elaborate – and potentially lucrative – Halloween attraction. Little do they realize that Eddie Burber has returned home and intends to have some All Hallow’s Eve fun of his own – setting up his own “Kill Room”, where the line between fantasy and reality quickly becomes blurred…

A surreal slasher from the wilds of New Orleans, THE LAST SLUMBER PARTY feels like a YA novel by R.L. Stine that was filtered through a haze of DIY madness. The story follows the foul-mouthed, sex-crazed Chris (played with gusto by Jan Jensen), Tracy, and Linda as they prepare for the ultimate slumber party on their last day of high school. But little do the ladies know that the party is about to be crashed by a maniacal killer with a giant scalpel! Rejecting all forms of logic in favor of a dreamlike mood, lifted scenes from HALLOWEEN, and songs by metalheads Firstryke, this is regional horror filmmaking at a magical peak.

This special limited edition slipcover is limited to 500 units and is only available on our website and at select indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them.

AJ lives a quiet, ordinary life in the midwest haven of Fargo, North Dakota. His days revolve around small rituals—morning toast, work as a technical consultant, and cherished afternoons at the local dog park with his two chihuahuas, Diddy and Biff. But when the mayor unexpectedly transforms the park into a sterile blog park with a strict “no dogs allowed” rule, AJ’s routine—and sense of peace—is shattered.

Determined to reclaim his happy place, AJ embarks on an increasingly surreal odyssey that starts with a goal to unseat the mayor and spirals into a fever dream of animated interludes, amateur brawling, and unexpected cosmic detours. Blending lo-fi live-action with bursts of mixed-media, AJ Goes to the Dog Park is a riotous, offbeat comedy about holding onto the things that matter in a world that won’t stop changing.

A scrappy, heartfelt debut from Emmy-nominated Toby Jones (Regular Show, OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes), the film is a love letter to community, canine companionship, and the absurd lengths we’ll go to protect what we love.

The Demon’s Rook

“A glimmering gem in a sea of low-budget splatter, The Demon’s Rook is flat-out unlike anything previously put to film — a mindbending tour de force of DIY filmmaking that delivers in spades what films ten times its budget cannot. The fever dreams of Lucio Fulci collide with ’80s creature features in this surreal horror/fantasy, wherein a young boy named Roscoe is lured into a parallel dimension by the good demon Dimwos. Raised to manhood in this dark realm, a Christ-like Roscoe (played by writer/director James Sizemore) pops out of the Earth decades later, bringing with him the secrets of the netherworld. Unfortunately, a trio of malevolent demons is none too pleased with this and, after turning a group of dimwitted construction workers into marauding ghouls and slaughtering a gaggle of campers, is after Roscoe with a maniacal vengeance. Now, Earth’s only chance at survival is a hipster raised in Hell and his damaged childhood chum Eva, whose path to glory is lit in every colour of Argento’s rainbow.

The homage-loving Sizemore has created a low-budget orgy of grue that can only be described as Return of the Living Dead by way of Jodorowsky, having lensed the entire head-scratching fantasy in his native Georgia and employing a nearly all-amateur cast and crew. The results, however, are astounding — with all manner of throat-ripping, head-smashing, and limb-severing from the self-taught Sizemore (who also handled a large majority of the film’s ample effects) and his band of skillful Southerners. And thanks to a helping hand from Ultra 8 executive producers (and TIFF superheroes) Colin Geddes and Katarina Gligorijevic, the finished product is polished and tight, while still feeling as indie as a feature can get.

Featuring supernatural mind melds, fog-drenched weirdness, and naked women with blood oozing from their gaping eyes, The Demon’s Rook is the sort of surreal cinematic oddity that will set your head spinning while simultaneously blowing your mind with its unabashed devotion to bucking the studio system and keeping things gleefully odd. By the time Roscoe and Eva face down the demons with their super-psychic, head-poppin’ powers, our nightmares have successfully made the leap from fantasy into the strange lo-fi world Sizemore has created for us. And regardless of his limited budget, this self-taught, first-time feature director has delivered a wonderfully weird film that will not be soon forgotten.”

The legend of Frankenstein gets a provocative modern update in the stylishly disturbing new film from indie horror master Larry Fessenden. Suffering from PTSD following his stint as an army medic, Henry (David Call) now works feverishly in his Brooklyn laboratory to forget the death he witnessed overseas by creating life in the form of a man cobbled together from body parts. After procuring a brain from an unwitting victim, his creation—Adam (Alex Breaux)—is born. But it soon seems that giving life to Adam was the easy part; teaching him how to live in a dark and troubled world may be perilous. A complex, emotionally shattering tale about what it means to be human, Depraved brings Mary Shelley’s immortal fable fully into the 21st century.

21-year-old Kana (rising star Yuumi Kawai) works a disaffected job at a beauty salon, where she bristles against the beauty expectations placed on women her age. Her erratic mood and default to self-destruct impacts all of her relationships, as moments of levity erupt into violence and optimism simmers to despair. Bored with her slavish boyfriend, she finds another; the novel excitement of it all soon devolving into a volatile predicament. Uncommitted and trapped in her own life, Kana slowly makes her way towards the inner desert of her emotions.

Alternating between claustrophobic blocking, ample zooms and expressive whip-pans brought together by dryly comedic editing and an intense actor’s direction, the sophomore effort from director Yoko Yamanaka (the youngest filmmaker to have a film selected at the Berlin International Film Festival with her 2017 debut Amiko) provides a frank and dynamic examination of womanhood and mental health in contemporary Japan. Inspired by the female protagonists of Yasuzo Masumura as much as the intense Cassavetes/Rowlands collaboration, Yamanaka breaks out with a work of stark confrontational honesty.

Since 1978, Icarus Films has been a leading distributor in North America of independent documentary, narrative, and experimental films from around the world and now represents a collection of over 1,000 titles. We value meeting the diverse needs of film lovers, educators, activists, and service providers, as well as challenging audiences, and programmers, with original creative films. This is the first film of D.H. Lawrence’s controversial novel, which premiered in 1955, five years before the uncensored novel even appeared in print in the UK. Danielle Darrieux (in the peak years of her stardom) is Constance Chatterley, faithful wife to her war-wounded paraplegic husband (British actor Leo Genn), whose fortune flows from a local coal mine. Everyone but she seems concerned about her loss of sexual fulfillment, and the possibility of her bearing an heir, until she crosses paths with the estate’s new gamekeeper (Erno Crisa), and they launch into an affair that ruptures the tight social fabric around them.

While this film wouldn’t be considered risqué by today’s audiences, it was seen as scandalous at the time. Initially banned upon its release, the Supreme Court eventually ruled this was a violation of free speech, letting LADY CHATTERLEY’S LOVER screen in theaters. Restored in 2K, this film deserves its place in cinema history.

Launched to stardom by Jim Jarmusch’s Mystery Train, enigmatic actor Masatoshi Nagase thrives as the hardboiled detective wannabe Maiku Hama in Kaizo Hayashi’s trilogy of the same name, encompassing The Most Terrible Time in My Life (1994), The Stairway to the Distant Past (1995) and The Trap (1996). Stomping through the bustling-and-hustling port city of Yokohama, Hama operates out of a run-down movie theatre and his office sees every kind of customer: from rich ladies looking for runaway pups to serial murderers who look suspiciously like himself… Equal part American hardboiled detective pastiche, Seijun Suzuki-style Nikkatsu akushon send-up, and Masatoshi Nagase’s own new school comedic charmer, the Maiku Hama Trilogy is a cult phenomena of 90s Japanese cinema, that would go on to inspire many – and spawn its own anthology NTV television series The Private Detective Mike by 2002.

The trilogy kicks things off in akushon black-and-white with The Most Terrible Time in My Life, set among immigrant communities of a multi-cultural Yokohama. When Maiku accidentally saves a Taiwanese immigrant named Yang during a mahjong parlour brawl, he becomes embroiled in a tale of two brothers at the heart of an underground pan-Asian mafia on the brink of war.

In The Stairway to the Distant Past, now in vibrant color, Maiku Hama returns in a dashing convertible that is promptly repo’d. Taking on odd jobs, from lost dogs to men looking for their own selves, Hama’s search leads him to a past he thought he’d left him behind as the port city’s most legendary stripper returns and our detective struggles with being a chip off the old block.

Closing out the trilogy is The Trap in which Nagase stars in a memorable double role. When a string of young women in floral dresses are found serenely posed and afflicted with rigor mortis, alarms are sounded throughout Yokohama about the possibility of a serial killer on the loose. But when all evidence points to Hama, he has to fight against the clock and former allies, putting his trust in a rookie cop and his trusted sidekick Hoshino. Will Hama escape the trap?

A 14 foot monster from hell, crazed vigilantes, and 84 zombies, try to keep our heroes from getting off the island.

Marley’s Revenge is one of the most fun (and funny) 80s monster movies but somehow slipped through the cracks and didn’t get the recognition or distribution it deserved initially. We couldn’t be happier to present this new edition packed with hours of special features and even multiple versions of the movie!

Until The Light Takes Us tells the story of black metal. Part music scene and part cultural uprising, black metal rose to worldwide notoriety in the mid-nineties when a rash of suicides, murders, and church burnings accompanied the explosive artistic growth and output of a music scene that would forever redefine what heavy metal is and what it stands for to other musicians, artists and music fans world-wide. Until The Light Takes Us goes behind the highly sensationalized media reports of “Satanists running amok in Europe” to examine the complex and largely misunderstood principles and beliefs that led to this rebellion against both Christianity and modern culture.

To capture this on film, directors Aaron Aites and Audrey Ewell moved to Norway and lived with the musicians for several years, building relationships that allowed them to create a surprisingly intimate portrait of this violent, but ultimately misunderstood, movement. The result is a poignant, moving story that’s as much about the idea that reality is composed of whatever the most people believe, regardless of what’s actually true, as it is about a music scene that blazed a path of murder and arson across the northern sky.

Ever since they were children Angela and her brother Peter have been as close as siblings could be. But when their relationship crosses the line from fraternal love to unnatural lust, Peter withdraws to become a priest, attempting to sever all contact with his sister. Hopelessly devoted to her brother and devastated by this abandonment, Angela soon experiences the physical manifestations of his guilt, as Peter sends her to work as a maid for a sadistic couple. Soon, Angela is thrust from one horrifying experience to the next; her body affecting an almost otherworldly draw from men whose only goal is to abuse and humiliate her. All the while they repeatedly cross paths with the mysterious “fireworks man,” an almost devilish presence who may be manipulating the lives of both Peter and Angela. The second feature directed by groundbreaking filmmaker Wes Craven (Last House on the Left, A Nightmare on Elm Street), THE FIREWORKS WOMAN (aka The Fireworks Man) ranks as his most structurally experimental effort as well as his most controversial. Craven’s sole foray into hardcore is both brimming with dark religious commentary as well as venerating essential works of underground erotic literature. Quality X is thrilled to present The Fireworks Woman fully uncut for the first time on video and newly restored in 4K from its best surviving film elements, along with extensive interviews which lend both historical and first-hand value to this mysterious and long obscure production.

Prior to becoming one of the most influential independent filmmakers of the 1980s, Bill Lustig (Maniac Cop, Vigilante) cut his teeth working within New York City’s busy world of adult film. Lustig’s first two features, under his moniker of Billy Bagg, are represented in this set of two very different X-rated oddities: VIOLATION OF CLAUDIA (1977) showcases the incredible Sharon Mitchell (Joy, Kamikaze Hearts), a beautiful and wealthy housewife who, bored by her inattentive husband, enters the seedy, bizarre world of prostitution via her manipulative tennis coach Jamie Gillis (Roommates). Also starring Crystal Sync (A Woman’s Torment), and New York character actor David Lipman aka “Waldo Short” (The Executioner, TV’s Law & Order) as a senator with a dessert fetish.

In HOT HONEY (1978), the titular teenager played by Heather Young (Deep Inside Annie Sprinkle) refuses her boyfriend’s non-stop advances, preferring to spend her time with her wheelchair-bound brother Michael. But through a series of unexpected events, Honey experiences a sexual awakening, transforming from wallflower to vixen and wickedly seducing men and women alike! Co-starring Serena (Taxi Girls), Herschel Savage (Getting Personal) and Robin Byrd (Her Name Was Lisa). Each film has been newly restored in 2K from their original negatives and includes a vibrant, no-holds-barred audio commentary with director Bill Lustig alongside the acclaimed contemporary auteur filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive, The Neon Demon).

Internationally beloved erotic movie star Jennifer Welles is finally ready to retire. But first she has to go out with one final bang, the one and only unfulfilled desire she still yearns for. While her driver takes her to experience her final sensuous conquest, Jennifer reflects on some of her most unusual sexual memories. From her initial experience with another woman to an incredible encounter at a cinema, even her most outrageous carnal exploits cannot compare to the one final passion soon to be before her.  The first film in Distribpix’ soon-to-be wildly successful series of sex star autobiographies, INSIDE JENNIFER WELLES was designed to be the cinematic swan song of one of the business’ biggest names. For this final triumph directed by Joe Sarno, who became the “Inside” series’ go-to filmmaker, several of New York’s top erotic actors were assembled for a non-stop orgiastic look at Welles’ “authentic” sexual encounters and fantasies, including Marlene Willoughby (Sunny), Richard Bolla (Indecent Exposure), among many others.
