The Race for Best International Feature at the 98th Oscars Is Officially Set

All the countries vying for the Best International Feature Film Oscar at the 98th Academy Awards have now made their selections, completing this year’s lineup. The submission deadline was October 1, and a total of 92 countries entered films for consideration. Of those, 86 were deemed eligible by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) and screened for voters.

The field will be narrowed down to 15 semifinalists on December 16, 2025, before the final five nominees are revealed alongside the rest of the Oscar nominations on January 22, 2026.

The Frontrunner: Sentimental Value (Norway)

Leading the pack remains Norway’s “Sentimental Value”, which continues to be viewed as not only a lock for International Feature but also a likely Best Picture contender overall. It’s shaping up as one of the year’s strongest awards players, with possible acting nods for Stellan Skarsgård, Renate Reinsve, and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, and even a shot for Elle Fanning.

Director Joachim Trier is also being seriously discussed in the Best Director conversation, further solidifying the film’s powerhouse status. If there’s one sure thing in this race right now, it’s that Sentimental Value will be there on nomination morning.

The Challenger: It Was Just an Accident (France/Iran)

After taking home the Palme d’Or at Cannes, “It Was Just an Accident” has established itself as the major challenger. Directed by Jafar Panahi, the film’s story extends beyond the screen — Panahi continues to face persecution in Iran for his work, and many in the industry believe the Academy will recognize both his courage and his artistry.

The film has already picked up nominations from early awards bodies like the British Independent Film Awards and the Gotham Awards, suggesting strong support that could carry into Oscar season.

Other Strong Contenders

Park Chan-wook’s “No Other Choice” from South Korea remains a steady presence in the race, with Lee Byung-hun earning attention for his commanding lead performance. Similarly, Brazil’s “The Secret Agent” continues to generate buzz, with Wagner Moura singled out by many critics as a standout.

Rounding out many predictions is Germany’s “Sound of Falling”, which won the Jury Prize at Cannes and has shown up at both the BIFA and Gotham nominations. My instincts say it could easily be the fifth nominee — and it helps that it comes from a different distributor than NEON, which seems poised to dominate the category otherwise.

On the Bubble: Possible Dark Horses

Several other films are still in the conversation and could sneak into the shortlist. Iraq’s “The President’s Cake” has been a quiet favorite among some pundits. Meanwhile, “Sirāt”, which also premiered at Cannes, shouldn’t be ruled out entirely.

“The Voice of Hind Rajab” — about a young Palestinian girl killed during the Israeli invasion of Gaza — feels heartbreakingly timely, which could make it resonate with voters. And “Left-Handed Girl”, co-produced by Sean Baker, could benefit from the goodwill he built with the Academy last year.

I’m also keeping an eye on “Late Shift”, featuring Leonie Benesch (from 2023’s The Teacher’s Lounge). Her continued presence in strong international cinema could keep her top of mind for voters.

Other Titles in the Mix

A handful of additional submissions are getting scattered attention. Hungary’s “Orphan” looks intriguing. Jordan’s “The Love That Remains” has drawn comparisons to “I’m Still Here,” while India’s “Homebound”, Iceland’s “The Love That Remains”, and Palestine’s “Palestine 36” are on pundits’ radar but haven’t generated much press so far.

As the race heats up, all eyes are on which countries’ films can translate early festival buzz into Academy recognition. With such a rich and varied lineup, the Best International Feature Film category is shaping up to be one of the most competitive — and emotionally charged — of the 98th Oscars season.

Kyrgyzstan, “Black Red Yellow”

June 18, 2025 | Kyrgyzfilm National Film Studio | 93 min | Kyrgyz, Russian | Drama

Aktan Arym Kubat

Synopsis: Black Red Yellow” is a feature film about three intertwined destinies, centered on a love between two ordinary villagers – a love that endures and uplifts. The film explores moral responsibility within the family and the need to cherish and respect one another. At its heart is Turdugul, a weaver whose carpets reflect the lives of those they are made for. In her hands, carpets become mirrors of their owners’ fates: one black, one red, one yellow. These colors symbolize human nature – black as calm and grounded, red as fiery and intense, yellow as nostalgic and melancholic. Though Turdugul is the village’s only weaver, each carpet is unique, shaped by the soul it represents. Through her craft, the film reveals the depth of everyday life, the emotional power of tradition, and how personality and destiny are woven into every thread. —Festival Scope
