Dodger (Mackenzie Astin) finds himself in Captain Manzini’s (Anthony Newley) antique shop, seeking refuge from a group of bullies. Manzini, a friend and protector of Dodger, provides him a safe haven while warning Dodger not to touch a grimy-looking garbage can crusted with slime. When the bullies find Dodger, a fight breaks out, and the garbage can topples over, releasing a bevy of pint-sized, grotesque aliens known as the Garbage Pail Kids®. The kids – Ali Gator, Nat Nerd, Greaser Greg, Foul Phil, Messy Tessie, and Valerie Vomit – befriend Dodger and help him get revenge against his bullies, defying the laws of good taste in the process!

Based on the popular Topps trading cards, THE GARBAGE PAIL KIDS® MOVIE captures the irreverence and gross-out humor of its source, mixing obnoxious gags with painstakingly disgusting make-up effects courtesy of John Carl Buechler (Re-Animator, Tammy and the T-Rex). Vinegar Syndrome Ultra is proud to present the world UHD premiere of one of the grossest movies ever made for children, from a new 4K scan of its original 35mm camera negative, giving every ounce of fluid and every wrinkle of latex the resolution it has always deserved.

Timecrimes

| VS-518 CASE |

2007 | 92 min | 1.85:1 | Spanish, English 5.1 Surround
Directed by Nacho Vigalondo
Starring: Karra Elejalde, Nacho Vigalondo, Candela Fernández, Bárbara Goenaga

This special limited edition 2-disc 4K UHD/Blu-ray set comes with a spot gloss hard slipcase + slipcover combo (designed by Adam Maida), includes a 40-page perfect bound book and is limited to 7,000 units. It is only available on our website and at select indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them.

Héctor (Karra Elejalde) lives with his wife Clara (Candela Fernández) in the peaceful Spanish countryside. One day, while relaxing in their backyard, Héctor spies a woman removing her clothes in a nearby forest via his binoculars. Once alone, he travels to her location to find the woman naked and presumably dead. He is attacked by an unknown, bandaged man, causing him to run further into the forest, where he stumbles upon a top-secret research facility, which happens to be home to a time machine. Upon meeting El Joven (played by director Nacho Vigalondo), a scientist in control of the facility and its machine, Héctor travels back in time one hour. Operating against El Joven’s wishes, Héctor leaves the facility, setting off a series of events with increasingly dark consequences.

The feature film debut of writer/director Nacho Vigalondo (Colossal, Open Windows), TIMECRIMES is an audacious mash-up of science fiction, horror, and murder mystery. Shot entirely on Super 16mm film by Spanish cinematographer Flavio Martínez Labiano (The Day of the Beast), a frequent collaborator of Álex de la Iglesia, and featuring almost entirely analog effects, TIMECRIMES is a lovingly old-fashioned throwback to the sci-fi films of the 60s and 70s while retaining much of the expected excesses of the genre films of the 2000s. Vinegar Syndrome is proud to present Nacho Vigalondo’s impeccably crafted, often very nasty, journey through time in a brand new 4K restoration of its 35mm DI negative for its world UHD premiere.

The engine behind Shaw Brothers never faltered in enthusiasm, willing to blend concepts both wildly ambitious and cleverly inspired by other cinema hits. Their waning days in the 1980s were no exception, and perhaps their most eclectic. Here we present to you a spectrum of horrors from the Shaw system, encompassing everything from demonic possession, atrocities of World War II, ghost stories, rape and revenge, police infighting, mahjong competition, blind prophets, the wages of good fortune, mother hatred, and even cannibalism.

SEX BEYOND THE GRAVE

When Ming, an inveterate gambler at mahjong, is given a lucky tablet by a blind peddler, his overwhelming greed takes over his life. Upon a lapse in winning, he is forced to sell his ancestral home, the Tao Tao mansion, ignoring strong warnings from the peddler. Ming is unaware of what happened there, as this home was the scene of a heinous sexual assault and murder during World War II and has been haunted ever since. After Ming’s scientist friend David and his family move in, they ignore both the warnings and the various eerie accidents happening around them. When an evil ghost drags their son Nicky into a well, it’ll test both their faith and their nerves to get him back.

Combining heavy influences of Poltergeist, intense mahjong action, twentieth-century history, and a shocking dose of sleaze, SEX BEYOND THE GRAVE again proves that Shaw Brothers could craft singular entertainment from an array of influences. Written and co-directed by Tai-Heng Li (assistant director of Dirty Ho, writer/assistant director of Legendary Weapons of China) and photographed by An Sung-Tsao (The Eight Diagram Pole Fighter) and Mu-To Kung (Five Deadly Venoms), it stars Tony Liu (Human Lanterns), Kuan-Chung Ku (Bastard Swordsman), and Mabel Kwong (Possessed II). The winds and dragons at Vinegar Syndrome are delighted to bring you this spirited shocker, newly scanned and restored from its original camera negative, and featuring its original, unaltered film-sourced soundtrack.

HELL HAS NO BOUNDARY

While out enjoying a seaside picnic with her fellow officer boyfriend, policewoman May becomes possessed by a murdered little girl spirit who immediately unleashes violent rage within her. While these strange powers benefit her at work, they also fuel burning, murderous contempt at all her co-workers and help her manipulate people and circumstances. As those close to her attempt to free her from this vengeful entity, the almighty forces of black magic threaten to overcome her forever.

Functioning as both a dark horror story and a study of maternal issues and feminine rage, HELL HAS NO BOUNDARY takes a possession story into realms of dread and trauma lasting generations. Directed by Chuan Yang (Seeding of a Ghost) and photographed by Chin Chiang Ma (Holy Flame of the Martial World), it stars Derek Yee (Magnificent Warriors), Kent Tong (Police Story), and features an astonishing Leanne Liu (The Lady Assassin) as May. Vinegar Syndrome is enthralled to present this demonic horror drama newly scanned and restored from its original camera negative, and featuring its original, unaltered film-sourced soundtrack.

HAUNTED TALES

PART 1. Newlyweds Mr. and Mrs. Chow have landed themselves a beautiful yet remote home at Forever Garden. But Mrs. Chow is exceedingly worried about strange happenings on the grounds. There are graves for two children, and no one knows why. Who are the lovely young renters next door who seem too eager to entertain her and her husband? A disfigured man named Stephen keeps bothering her, asking for his eye back. Will she discover the plot before it’s too late?

PART 2. Lowly building superintendent Ah Shing discovers children playing a Ouija-like game with a saucer in an empty apartment. When the saucer reveals itself to be a Fox spirit, it delivers him a winning lottery number and a warning. His good luck will reverse unless he promises to refrain from prostitutes, using drugs, and committing murder. The lecherous Ah Shing cannot help himself once emboldened with cash, and as he begins to break his promise, the saucer spirit awaits.

Co-directed/co-written by Chor Yuen (Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan) and Mou Tun-Fei (Men Behind the Sun), HAUNTED TALES is a bracing horror anthology combining two different projects into an efficient package. Co-written by Szeto On (The Boxer’s Omen) and Alex Cheung (Man on the Brink), it features Li Ching (The Boxer from Shantung), Yun Ling (Killers on Wheels), Chan Shen (The 36th Chamber of Shaolin), and Chi-Ching Yang (Come Drink with Me). Vinegar Syndrome is eager to extend these chilling tales to you, newly scanned and restored from its original camera negative, and featuring its original, unaltered film-sourced soundtrack.

Bradford “Big Brad” Whitewood Sr. (Christopher Walken, King of New York) is the leader of a rural Pennsylvania gang of career criminals and his son, Bradford “Little Brad” Whitewood Jr. (Sean Penn, State of Grace), is an unemployed teenager who decides he wants a taste of his father’s flashy lifestyle and the power that comes with it. Embarking on a budding life of crime with his brother Tommy (played by Sean Penn’s real life brother Chris Penn, True Romance), Little Brad gets arrested, sparking a tense showdown between father and son, and their family and friends who get caught in the middle.

Based on the real life Pennsylvania gang run by Bruce Johnston, from a script by Nicholas Kazan (Patty Hearst), At Close Range marks the sophomore feature for acclaimed American genre filmmaker James Foley (Glengarry Glen Ross; After Dark, My Sweet). Featuring an eclectic ensemble cast that puts the leads opposite Mary Stuart Masterson (Fried Green Tomatoes), Crispin Glover (River’s Edge), Tracey Walter (Repo Man), David Strathairn (Matewan), and Kiefer Sutherland (Stand By Me) with striking night time cinematography by regularly Foley collaborator Juan Ruiz Anchía (Glengarry Glen Ross, The Corruptor), Foley’s film is one of the great American crime films of the 1980s. The Films of Hisayasu Satô: Volume #2 – An Aria on Gazes / Love – Zero = Infinity

| PL-002 CASE |

1992-1994 | 127 min (combined) | 1.85:1 | Japanese 1.0 Mono
Directed by Hisayasu Satô
Starring: Kiyomi Itô, Momori Asano, Kyôko Nakamura, Issei Sagawa, Takeshi Itô, Ryûmei Homura

The 1970s through 1990s saw a boom in transgressive genre filmmaking throughout Asia, but particularly in Japan where the “Pinku Eiga” became one of the most popular types of films produced in the country. With young filmmakers seizing an opportunity to hone their craft, countless soon-to-be celebrated directors created work which were more daring, unusual, and often shocking than just about any of the other genre cinema ergering across the globe. Pink Line will present exclusive new restorations of select works from key Asian erotic filmmakers, with a focus on Japan’s Pinku Eiga genre.

This special limited edition Blu-ray comes with a spot gloss hard slipcase + slipcover combo (designed by Luke Insect), includes a 40-page perfect bound book, and is limited to 4,000 units. It is only available on our website and at select indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them.

As pink film auteur Hisayasu Satô evolved as a filmmaker, he both expanded and refined his fascination with connecting elements of melancholy, violence, voyeurism, and repressed sexuality. In this second installment of THE FILMS OF HISAYASU SATÔ, Pink Line presents two of his most celebrated and also most controversial features from his prolific early 90s output, presented in new director-approved restorations from their 35mm original camera negatives.

In AN ARIA ON GAZES (aka The Bedroom), an exclusive Tokyo club offers a safe haven for its clients to anonymously indulge in perverse and deeply personal erotic fantasies as the lines between reality and imagination become increasingly opaque – and dangerous. One of Satô’s most lyrical and structurally experimental films, which effortlessly blends moments of tenderness and brutality, centers on a stirring performance by Kiyomi Itô (Muscle) and an appearance by real-life cannibal Issei Sagawa.

In LOVE – ZERO = INFINITY, Satô’s focus on bonding and connection through voyeurism hits a fever pitch in this simultaneously unsettling and romantic saga of two disturbed outsiders finding unexpectedly kindred spirits in each other. Tōru Bessho, a lonely voyeur whose feverish desire for companionship borders on stalking, is hired by a doctor to follow his mysterious young wife. But as they each grow increasingly aware of the other’s presence, violent desires also begin to erupt within them in this fatalistic piece, blurring intimacy and blood ritual.

REVIVER 1

| RVVR-001 SLIP |

1970-1980 | 142 min (combined) | 1.85:1 | English Mono
Directed by 111111111111
Starring: 1111111111111111111, 111111111111111, 111111111111111111111

The Reviver sub-label releases lost films and missing movies found within the Vinegar Syndrome Film Archive. Each release is a “mystery box” of archival curios scanned from their best-surviving film elements and programmed by VS archivist & vault manager Oscar Becher. Purchases of Reviver releases directly fund archival expenses and day-to-day maintenance of the film archive.

This special limited edition spot gloss slipcover (designed by Robert Sammelin) is limited to 6,000 units and is only available on our website and at select indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them.

Over the past ten years, Vinegar Syndrome has become home to one of the largest archivally-stored collections of film materials in the world. Although VS’ curatorial focus has always been forgotten cult classics in the form of feature films produced between the 1960s-1990s, the Film Archive itself includes works of all types, genres, film formats, and durations, with titles created as early as the 1920s and as recently as the 2000s.

Receiving new collections, their inventorying and cataloging, rehousing them into archival cans, and then finally shelving them where they will remain safe for the future is just the start in every title’s possible VS Film Archive journey. But every decrepit cardboard box, sticker-encrusted shipping can, or rusty reel offers a fresh mystery to discover and many of those mysteries have remained stashed in the Film Archive for years; deemed too weird, rare, or just out of place with the established Vinegar Syndrome release pattern…that is, until now!

Reviver, a new line of releases curated by Vinegar Syndrome Film Archive, will at long last shed light onto films which might otherwise languish, maybe forever, forgotten to time. This line will focus on resurrecting films – both full length features and short films – which have gone missing for years. In this inaugural release we’ll be offering the home video debut of a regional murder thriller lost for nearly a half century, alongside a trio of hometown shorts to get you in the mood. But just like we only discovered these films by watching them, we want you to experience the same delight, surprise, and bewilderment as the treasures (or trash?) contained herein unspool before your eyes, with no other hints, titles nor advance info given. Reviver is a mystery box of cinematic oddities you won’t soon forget.

The profits from each REVIVER go directly to helping to fund the operations and upkeep of the Vinegar Syndrome Film Archive. That means that by purchasing this Blu-Ray you are directly helping us pay for archival film cans, colder and drier (read: safer) film storage and expanding our archive’s ability to continue the hunt for lost films. Thank you for your support.

Mid-1990s, New York City. Patti, Angela, Emma and Nikki are high school seniors and best friends preparing for life beyond graduation. Their dreams for the future differ greatly – Angela wants to become a poet, Emma and Nikki have are heading for college, and Patti is a young mother looking for stability in her kid’s life – but the four bright, young women are steadfastly loyal to each other in a way only teenagers know how to be. Their lives are then completely upended when, after being sexually assaulted, Nikki unexpectedly commits suicide. Grieving, angry and forced to return to daily life without satisfying recourse for their feelings, the girls must come of age with a newfound understanding about the patriarchal world in which they live.

Led by Lili Taylor, Bruklin Harris, Anna Grace and recent Academy Award-nominee Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (KING RICHARD), the 1996 award-winning Sundance indie was co-written by the actors in collaboration with first-time filmmaker Jim McKay, lending “a welcome little gust of teen-age realism” (The New York Times) to the film’s coming-of-age narrative. One of the first films of its kind to frankly address sexual violence as women experience it, GIRLS TOWN continues to be relevant in a post-#MeToo world. An energetic, all-female soundtrack featuring 1990s musical icons Queen Latifah, PJ Harvey, Roxanne Shante, Salt-N-Pepa and others underscore the films timeless message of empowerment.

The 4K restoration by IndieCollect was funded with support from the HFPA Trust, Donald A. Pels Charitable Trust, IndieCollect donors, and Fellow Citizen, Inc.

Amidst the partying, Angelique (Christine Gallo) begins to research the bizarre circumstances surrounding the death of her grandfather, the former owner of the cabin. She soon discovers that her grandfather had collected documented evidence of a local satanic cult and their evil endeavors. After a drunken prank goes horribly wrong, a cloaked and claw-gloved satanic killer lays siege upon the cabin; forcing the girls to fight for their sanity and lives.

The startling feature debut from New York based writer / director Sal Ciavarello, Hardcore Poisoned Eyes is a claustrophobic, cabin bound, winter set chamber piece which Rue Morgue magazine called both “atmospheric and jarring”. By utilizing a single location, an insular cast, and the dynamic visual stylings of Emmy-nominated cinematographer Huy Truong, Ciavarello’s Hardcore Poisoned Eyes was significant for delivering genuine tension and nail-biting chills which were commonly absent from the work of his SOV contemporaries.

In the 1990s, Something Weird Video mesmerized a generation of film fanatics by unearthing the most wildly surreal genre films of all time—all via the magic of VHS. KRAZEE KIDZ VIDEO PARTY is a loving tribute to those cathode-tube-fueled days. Featuring five deranged kiddie features—all preserved from the original Something Weird S-VHS masters—this collection serves as a time machine to a beloved era in home video history.

THE BIG BAD WOLF (1957, 53 mins, Color)
Inflicting trauma on kids across the country during its original theatrical run, this is a surreal anthropomorphic nightmare that masquerades as a children’s film.

FUN IN BALLOON LAND (1965, 53 mins, Color)
Calling all “weirdees” for this campy amateur production that documents the 45th annual Thanksgiving Day Parade in Philadelphia and other strange sights.

POLLY POCKETS (1960s, 25 mins, Color)
Meet us at the Castle of Gloom for this un-aired kiddie TV show pilot that’s best viewed under the influence of a mind-altering substance.

THE PRINCESS AND THE MAGIC FROG (1965, 78 mins, Color)
Leprechauns, wizards, and puppets unite in this WIZARD OF OZ homage that was filmed by the lunatics responsible for THE MAGIC CHRISTMAS TREE.

KINGDOM OF CROOKED MIRRORS (1963, 76 mins, Color)
Resembling an acid-tinged, live-action cartoon, this Russian fairy tale is an imaginative, stylish, and wonderfully surreal discovery.

Working out of an abandoned hangar at a small regional airport in East Los Angeles, Germán Alonso surrounds himself in a Gilliam-esque fantasy world, expressing his vision the only way he knows how: making phantasmagorical films with help from his friends, family and hundreds of handmade puppets.

But when a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity comes along to adapt a feature-length version of his college thesis film, about a Mexican immigrant-turned-cyborg named “MexMan” — Alonso’s own superpowers begin to strain, as creative conflicts emerge with his producers and an old crush reappears.

Six strangers meet at an underground sex club in Japan for a night of anonymous pleasure. While first-timers and regulars collide, each member’s attitude towards sex and satisfaction becomes challenged as their kinks and inhibitions begin to reveal more than they were initially willing to let on.

Adapted from the critically acclaimed play of the same name, LOVE’S WHIRLPOOL explores Japan’s fuzoku (sex industry) with candor, humor and freewheeling indecency. “Stylishly shot and explicit,” Daisuke Miura’s foray into the city’s erotic underbelly provides “great thrills, both erotic and comedic, as well as genuine emotion” (Screen Anarchy).

Martin Roumagnac

| IC007 SLIP |

1946 | 108 min | 1.33:1 | English DTS-HD MA 2.0
Directed by Georges Lacombe
Starring: Marlene Dietrich, Jean Gabin

We value meeting the diverse needs of film lovers, educators, activists, and service providers, as well as challenging audiences, and programmers, with original creative films. This special limited edition slipcover (designed by Brandon Schaefer) is limited to 500 units and is only available on our website and at select indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them.

This tragic postwar romance is a tale of class anxiety and classic Romantic fatalism, run through with a typically French frankness about sex and gender. Jean Gabin is the titular character, an unpretentious and proudly working class building contractor, who falls in love with Marlene Dietrich’s ravishing shopgirl Blanche, quite unaware that she comes trailing a notorious sexual history and attracts the determined ardor of every man she meets. Among her current lovers (the American title was The Room Upstairs) is a local politician who plans on marrying Blanche once his terminally ill wife dies, but Gabin’s sensible lug doesn’t care, though it’s clear that the ever-opportunistic Blanche will choose wealth over love.

Until she doesn’t. Both Lacombe’s film and Dietrich’s performance have a sphinx-like attitude toward this femme fatale, and that still-gestating film noir stereotype is subtly deepened. Blanche is not judged or made to seem amoral. The men that buzz around her are not villainized, either – they’re just following their toxic hearts, in a culture where women like Blanche have so few options. Meanwhile, as the melodrama heats up, Gabin and Dietrich radiate pure matinee charisma, in the only movie these two icons ever made together.

Factory 25, a Brooklyn-based independent film distribution company was founded in 2009 by Matt Grady. F25 is a home for conceptually provocative narratives and documentaries. Its mission is to deliver specialized film and music titles in an aesthetically captivating way while exposing the indie world to under-the-radar films, music, and other curiosities in various ways and formats — theatrically, digitally, on TV, VOD, via subscription, limited edition DVDs,  Blu-ray’s, books and vinyl. Vinegar Syndrome’s sister company, OCN Distribution, is thrilled to be representing this diverse and unique home video line!

Infamous for his arrest trial and conviction in the 1990’s for his self-published comix, artist Mike Diana also made a string of homemade films. Starting with 8mm in the early ’80s and graduating to video, Diana enlisted his own family and neighborhood kids in an array of bizarre, gross, and hilarious movies, to varied levels of completion. The 1989 feature Blood Brothers is Dianas demented update on the slasher trend. Quite literally a “backyard movie,” it mostly stars children, and what it lacks in its zero-dollar budget it makes up for with unhinged charm. Illicit substances, coat-hanger abortions, mutilation and decapitation have never been so fun.

1990’s Baked Baby Jesus is a loud, unapologetic shot-on-video revolt against the downfall of American society. As if it was designed to be seen by Diana’s enemies instead of his peers, the shorts marry together real abortion rally footage, a necrophiliac love story, and perhaps the most infamous sequence of all, a tour of the infant-only cemetery Babyland.

Both films were originally traded through the mail, and have only been available directly through Mike Diana himself. Factory 25 has gone back to the original video sources and provided higher quality than ever before possible (previous versions had primitive sound dubbing and editing) and has overseen the reconstruction of several otherwise lost short films, some completed here for the first time.

“Wrestling is such a brutal business, it doesn’t surprise people that it attracts sociopaths, fame whores, coke whores, and adrenaline junkies. But why did it attract an artist?” asks Billy Corgan, frontman of The Smashing Pumpkins and wrestling promoter. It’s the central question posed in Nevermore: The Raven Effect, a documentary exploring a pivotal shift in wrestling history through the eyes of Scott Levy, also known as Raven, a brilliant, self-destructive performer who helped shape the style and tone of the no-holds-barred ECW, a notoriously extreme indie promotion known for its bloody matches and use of real weapons.

After being fired from WCW and WWF, Nevermore: The Raven Effect follows Raven’s entry into ECW, where he brought a darker, more rebellious energy that electrified fans and helped ignite the 1990s wrestling boom. The chaos in the ring was fueled by a backstage world of drugs, alcohol, and sex. From “slip and slide rhino orgies” to being revived from an overdose by an adrenaline shot to the heart and wrestling just hours later, the line between performance and reality was dangerously thin. The film shifts between Raven’s present-day reflections and his devil-may-care past, charting a wild ride marked by untimely deaths and the looming shadow of CTE. Interviews with legends like Chris Jericho, Tommy Dreamer, The Sandman, DDP, and Rob Van Dam provide an unfiltered window into the era.

Though hard-hitting, the documentary also captures moments of tenderness, pride, and nostalgia as Raven and his peers look back on what they built, despite the wreckage it left behind. Nevermore: The Raven Effect celebrates Raven’s legacy and the transformation of wrestling in the 1990s while unflinchingly confronting the brutal cost of this high-stakes, high-drama world.

Pink Cut & Top Stripper

| KANI-034 |

1982-1983 | 130 min (combined) | 1.85:1 | Japanese DTS-HD MA 2.0
Directed by Yoshimitsu Morita
Starring: Kaori Okamoto, Ken Miyawaki, Nami Misaki, Ayako Ota, Jun Ueno, Yudo Yoshikawa, Akio Kaneda

Named after Yasujiro Ozu’s custom-made, tatami-level, crab-like tripod, Kani is a new home video label dedicated to leveling the gaze and furthering the understanding of Asian cinema in North America. Focused on genre-defying films, Kani aims to expand the canon, bolster up-and-coming filmmakers and reintroduce repertory classics in context. Vinegar Syndrome’s sister company, OCN Distribution, is thrilled to be representing this diverse and unique home video line!

This special limited edition slipcover is limited to 1,000 units and is only available on our website and at select indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them.

Before The Family Game redefined the Japanese cinema of the 1980s, Yoshimitsu Morita cut his teeth on two remarkable erotic films for Nikkatsu’s Roman Porno line: Top Stripper (1982) and Pink Cut: Love Me Hard, Love Me Deep (1983). Marked by an atypically sweet, sex-positive tone and an infectious pop sensibility that stands out amongst the more tortured classics of the genre, both films find the independent filmmaker working with studio resources for the first time and therefore experimenting with various new modes of filmmaking.

Top Stripper follows Yoichi (Kensuke Miyawaki), a bright-eyed delivery boy who misguidedly falls in love with the stripper next door, Gloria (Kaori Okamoto). Shot on-location in a near-documentary style that forefronts delightful bygone locations and the camaraderie inherent to the strip club’s troupe, the film hits a surprising note of coming-of-age, suffused with open-ended questions about spectatorship that prove critical of the medium itself. Its pop-inflected counterpart, Pink Cut: Love Me Hard, Love Me Deep, sees Morita working on a set for the first time, basking in the artificiality of it all. Morita goes as far as staging musical numbers, in a fantasmatic tale of entrepreneurship that finds Mami (Mayumi Terashima) and Yuka (Mai Inoue) open a barbershop best known for its… special services. A pure candy-colored concoction emblematic of the 1980s, it reveals Morita as a thoroughly versatile filmmaker that here takes his first steps towards the striking, playful postmodernism that would define his entire oeuvre.

Psychotropic Overload

| VHSHitfest-019 SLIP |

1994 | 82 min | 1.33:1 | English DTS HD-MA 2.0
Directed by Joseph F. Alexandre
Starring: Joseph F. Alexandre, John Thomas, David Whitman

VHSHITFEST has been uncovering and releasing movies on video for over a decade, across DVD and VHS, and is now moving into blu-ray, with the same goal to showcase the most unique, crazy, and obscure movies that they’ve discovered through years of collecting VHS, allowing even more people to actually be able to experience these nearly lost gems in the best versions possible.

This special limited edition slipcover (designed by Earl Kessler Jr.) is limited to 1,000 units and is only available on our website and at select indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them.

A psychiatrist, a fashion photographer and a detective find their lives intertwined in a curious case involving the disappearance of several male models. Steven Callahan (David Wittman) is a well respected therapist has just taken on a new client named Christian (Joseph F. Alexandre) who’s an aspiring fashion photographer who suffers from a series of bizarre and violent fantasies. As the fantasies become more vivid Steven becomes suspicious these are more than just random thoughts. Simultaneously, foul mouthed detective Tim Poroski (John Thomas) is faced with a series of murders and disappearances of several male models.

Psychotropic Overload is one of the most unique independent horror movies of the 90s. It’s a very Hitchcockian movie and cleverly blends the video format with 8mm and 16mm films elements. We are so excited for this to get a new audience and I think it will genuinely surprise you how well made it is.

In Sultana’s Dream, director Isabel Herguera brings one of the earliest works of feminist science fiction to life in a bold and visually striking animated feature. Inspired by Begum Rokeya’s 1905 tale of a peaceful, women-led utopia called Ladyland, the film follows Inés, a Spanish artist who travels to India and becomes captivated by this visionary world — and the real woman who imagined it. Moved and unsettled by the story’s radical vision, Inés begins to examine her own relationship to feminism, history, and identity.

As she journeys across India, Inés’s path begins to blur with that of Rokeya herself, conjuring surreal and poetic encounters with real-life archives, suppressed histories, and imagined futures. Shifting animation styles — from watercolor to shadow puppetry to mehndi — reflect the film’s exploration of cultural exchange, gender roles, and the power of imagination as resistance.

Sultana’s Dream is a poetic, political, and visually dazzling celebration of feminist thought across time. At once a tribute to a forgotten pioneer and a rallying cry for new ways of seeing, it offers a powerful reminder: to imagine another world is the first step toward building it.

Aitana returns home for the first time in three years, excited to introduce her wife and their adopted infant son to her extended family and celebrate Christmas together. The family villa in the Spanish countryside is exactly as she remembers – except for the addition of Nadia, a Romanian refugee who has claimed Aitana’s bedroom, her clothes, and her family heirlooms. Why have Aitana’s conservative parents, long suspicious of immigrants, embraced the mysterious Nadia with such uncharacteristic warmth? Is Nadia a shrewd usurper, or an unwitting vessel for darker forces spreading across the land? A twisty thriller that locates the uncanny in the reflexive cordiality of the holiday season, YOU ARE NOT ME is a dark and disturbing dispatch from the most irrational realm: family.

Gloria Saunders arrives at a quiet, bayside hotel for a relaxed evening. But the tranquility of her stay is quickly interrupted when a trio of men violently kidnap her, bringing her to a strange club. Confused and frightened, Gloria is soothingly informed that she is to be the centerpiece of an elaborate sexual performance which will fulfill her deepest longings and hidden desires, only to have no memory of the experience after it concludes. With no choice but to participate, she is prepared and brought on stage where anonymous lovers of all types begin to emerge through the mysterious green door. A low budget, but highly ambitious effort which would become one of the biggest X-rated hits of the 1970s, The Mitchell Brothers’ landmark BEHIND THE GREEN DOOR made an international sensation and bonafide star out of its leading lady, Marilyn Chambers (Rabid), while also becoming one of the first hardcore features to win mainstream acclaim for both its technical innovation and artistic merits. With a supporting cast including Johnnie Keyes (SexWorld), George McDonald (Powder Burns), NFL star Ben Davidson (The Black Six), and many more figures from San Francisco’s underground and counterculture art scenes, which helped further develop its cult reputation, BEHIND THE GREEN DOOR at last comes to 4K UHD and Blu-ray, from the Mitchell Brothers Film Group. This genre classic is newly restored from its 16mm camera original alongside a bountiful selection of special features, including a bonus CD containing its outstanding original soundtrack.
