Bill Crafton is enjoying a quiet vacation at a remote cabin with his daughter Julie when, all of a sudden, a giant, Bigfoot-like creature bursts in, killing Julie and dragging her body off into the woods. A few months later, young Jack Bergman – the nephew of the cabin’s owner – arrives with his friends, under the guise of a fun-filled few days in the wilderness. However, when they find the place ransacked, Jack is forced to reveal the true purpose of the trip — to investigate the recent disappearance of his uncle Clem, amidst reports of other strange goings-on in the area. Sure enough, when night falls, Bigfoot reappears and attacks the group, dragging two of them away. As dawn breaks, Jack and the rest of his friends prepare to hunt the beast and unknowingly set off on a journey of bloody, otherworldly terror.

Based on an original story by John Carl Buechler – prolific special effects artist and director of Troll and Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood – and helmed by Emmett Alston (New Year’s Evil), DEMONWARP is a delirious late 80s creature feature which throws in everything and the kitchen sink, from hulking Sasquatches, ghoulish zombies, bloody sacrifices and monstrous alien overlords. Featuring Academy Award-winner George Kennedy (Cool Hand Luke, Just Before Dawn, Uninvited) and packed full of gratuitous nudity and head-ripping action, Vinegar Syndrome is thrilled to unveil DEMONWARP on UHD for the very first time, restored in 4K from its original camera negative and loaded with a wealth of newly-produced bonus features.

In the small English town of Newton, a pharmaceutical company’s experiments with a new vaccine take a disastrous turn when a laboratory accident triggers an outbreak of a deadly virus. With head scientist Dr. Adams missing, and the authorities eager to keep the incident under wraps, Captain Kirk is drafted in to try to get the situation under control. With the area under quarantine, the pressure is on Captain Kirk to track down and eliminate Dr. Adams before the authorities take drastic action.

Body of Evidence

| VS-528 CASE |

MGM | 1993 | 101 min | 1.85:1 | English 2.0 Stereo
Directed by Uli Edel
Starring: Madonna, Willem Dafoe, Anne Archer, Julianne Moore, Joe Mantegna

This special limited edition 2-disc 4K UHD/Blu-ray set comes with a spot gloss hard slipcase + slipcover combo (designed by Adam Maida), includes a 40-page perfect bound book and is limited to 6,000 units. When the wealthy Andrew Marsh is found dead of a heart attack in bed, the police don’t know what to make of the homemade sex-tape he died watching, nor the fact that he was discovered handcuffed. As it comes out that his much younger, BDSM-inclined girlfriend Rebecca Carlson was not only on that sextape, but also in his will for an $8M inheritance, district attorney Robert Garrett goes after her. Accusing Rebecca of having cunningly made her own body the murder weapon, and with public opinion against her, only Carlson’s defense attorney, Frank Dulaney, seems to believe that she’s innocent. But that’s before things get considerably rougher, both in the court and in the uneasy confidence between Rebecca and her chosen counsel.

Released at the height of the 1990’s erotic thriller boom, BODY OF EVIDENCE took the bold step of casting a pop culture superstar arguably at the peak of her fame, Madonna (Desperately Seeking Susan). Helmed by a master of the complicated character drama, Uli Edel (Christiane F.), with a nail-biting performance from four-time Oscar® nominee Willem Dafoe (To Live and Die in L.A.), this racy noir builds tension and mood to a dizzying climax. It also boasts a stacked supporting cast including Joe Mantegna (House of Games), Anne Archer (Fatal Attraction), Jürgen Prochnow (In the Mouth of Madness), and Julianne Moore (The Big Lebowski). Vinegar Syndrome is achingly excited to present the UHD debut of this twist-filled thriller in both its unrated director’s and R-rated theatrical cuts, in brand-new, director-approved 4K restorations.

Dead Boyz Can’t Fly

| VSA-059 |

Commando Video | 1992 | 102 min | 1.85:1 | English Mono
Directed by Howard Winters (aka Cecil Howard)
Starring: David John, Brad Friedman, Ruth Collins, Jason Stein, Daniel J. Johnson, Sheila Kennedy

DEAD BOYZ CAN’T FLY is part of our Vinegar Syndrome Archive collection, celebrating forgotten cinematic oddities from the video store era. This collection was inspired by our own brick & mortar video stores, with locations in Bridgeport, CT, Denver, CO, Toronto, ON, and Pittsburgh, PA. Unique to this line, each numbered limited edition release will come fitted in a specially designed, bottom loading VHS inspired slipcase, while also including a double-sided poster.

These releases will ONLY be available on our website and at participating indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them. This spot gloss slipcase edition (designed by Steak Mtn.) is strictly limited to 4,000 units and may (but probably not) be followed by a standard edition in the future.

Deadbeat amateur artist Buzz shows up at a New York office building in hopes of landing himself a job, but quickly finds himself humiliated by a sleazy employment agent in front of his glamorous new female secretary. When Buzz happens across the same woman later that night, he decides to vent his anger by viciously raping and stabbing her to death. The next day, with the police on the hunt for the woman’s murderer, Buzz convinces fellow goons Jo Jo and sadistic crossdresser Goose to launch an all-out assault on the office building in order to score cash and drugs. No sooner are the trio inside the building than they begin torturing, raping, and slaughtering their way through the terror-stricken office workers, forcing janitor John, a Vietnam veteran suffering from PTSD, to launch a counter-offensive against the hoodlums.

The final film by prolific erotic filmmaker Howard Winters, aka Cecil Howard (Firestorm, Star Angel), 1992’s DEAD BOYZ CAN’T FLY is a gritty, blood-soaked throwback to the mean-spiritedness of 70s exploitation movies, based on an original script by Straw Weisman, writer of notorious nasty Fight for Your Life. Blending elements of A Clockwork Orange and The Warriors alongside aspects of Vietnam War-reckoning movies such as Born on the Fourth of July, Vinegar Syndrome Archive is delighted to unleash this underseen shocker on Blu-ray for the first time, freshly restored in 4K from its original camera negative and accompanied by a host of revelatory new cast and crew interviews.

Boxcar Bertha

| CIN-030 CASE |

MGM | 1972 | 88 min | 1.85:1 | English DTS-HD MA 1.0
Directed by Martin Scorsese
Starring: Barbara Hershey, David Carradine, Barry Primus, Bernie Casey, John Carradine, Victor Argo

Taking its name from the Lumière Brothers invention of the same name, Cinématographe is a new sub-label from Vinegar Syndrome that seeks to fill gaps in the canon of American cinema. Offering a mix of auteur driven studio films produced during the New Hollywood era of the late 1960s and 70s all the way through the indie boom of the 1980s and 90s, Cinématographe will explore the wide breadth of American moviemaking, spanning numerous genres and scales of production. Curated and produced by Vinegar Syndrome’s Justin LaLiberty, each limited edition release will be housed in a specially designed, cloth-bound, media book with embossed foil titles and custom molded disc trays accompanied by a slipcase featuring newly commissioned art and an individually numbered J-card.

This special limited edition J-card MediaBook slipcase (designed by Tony Stella) is limited to 5,000 units and is only available on our website and at select indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them. (Note: this Limited Edition includes a 60 page booklet)

“Boxcar” Bertha Thompson (Barbara Hershey, The Last Temptation of Christ), a transient young woman living in the American south in the 1930s, rides the rails bouncing from job to job and town to town, often leaving dishonest men in her wake. She eventually comes across “Big” Bill Shelly (David Carradine, Death Race 2000), a hard working laborer turned union organizer. They quickly develop a romantic relationship and, along with two friends—Rake Brown (Barry Primus, New York, New York) and Von Morton (Bernie Casey, Hit Man)—begin an old fashioned crime spree, robbing banks and trains, and becoming fast enemies of both the railway company and local law enforcement.

The sophomore narrative feature for Martin Scorsese, who also co-edited the film, Boxcar Bertha bears not only many of the hallmarks of his filmography to come but those of producers Roger and Julie Corman as well. Adapted from the book Sister of the Road: The Autobiography of Boxcar Bertha, Scorsese’s film combines elements of true crime grit with the style, and excesses, expected in drive-in exploitation pictures of the 1970s. Long overlooked in the filmography of one of American, and world, cinema’s greatest filmmakers, Cinématographe is proud to bring Martin Scorsese’s Boxcar Bertha to 4K UHD for the first time in the world, from a new restoration supervised by Scorsese himself.

Sweden’s first feature film shot on video (U-matic), is also Sweden’s only slasher movie. The overall-clad hemophiliac “The Bleeder” is roaming the abandoned estate of Byfors, blood pouring from his eyes. The all-girl band Rock Cats (real-life band Revanch) have engine trouble with their tour bus in the middle of the woods. Guess where they end up? Hans Hatwig is the legendary editor of the hugely successful Swedish pop magazines Poster (1974-1980) and Okej (1980-1989). He photographed the bands himself, and got Gene Simmons from KISS to pose with a poster for The Bleeder in his mouth, fueling the rumor that Simmons played the lead character, a clever PR trick by the enterprising Hatwig. The Bleeder is actually played by Åke Eriksson, one of Sweden’s best drummers, known from bands like Attack, Bedlam and Wasa Express.

The small community of Eidolon Crossing once boasted a flourishing economy, fueled primarily by the rural amusement park Dogwood Park. Then the child murders began. Once the bodies of multiple murdered children were unearthed on the park’s property, attendance declined and the town quickly withered into poverty and ruin. Over the course of 35 years, 26 children disappeared at the hands of an elusive murderer and the decaying amusement park was dubbed Deadwood Park by the superstitious locals. Former resident Jake Richardson (William Clifton), returns to his parents’ dilapidated farmhouse to search for answers surrounding his twin brother’s childhood disappearance. Soon the spirits of the murdered children appear to Jake, luring him back to the decrepit grounds of Deadwood Park, in an attempt to uncover the horrific and homicidal secrets buried deep beneath Eidolon Crossing.

An atmospheric juggernaut shot on location at Midwestern drive-in theaters, creaky cabins, and an actual, overgrown abandoned amusement park (replete with crumbling coasters and rusted ferris wheels), Deadwood Park is a sweeping, gore-soaked, SOV folk horror epic from the visionary, Missouri based video auteur Eric Stanze (Savage Harvest, Scrapbook, Ratline). Evoking melancholic autumnal vibes, spine-tingling scares, and an overall sense of relentless dread, Deadwood Park found Stanze pushing his micro-budget DIY aesthetics to dizzying new heights; culminating in a sobering, supernatural metaphor for the child mortality that proliferates in the wake of war, dystopia, and economic blight. Saturn’s Core is proud to present the Blu-Ray debut of Deadwood Park, sporting a brand new restoration supervised by director Eric Stanze plus an accursed, buried chest of new and archival special features.

An urban legend-based slasher from acclaimed filmmaker S. Torriano Berry, EMBALMER is one of the few 1990s independent horror movies that was made for Black audiences. The story follows Chiffon, a troubled teenager with a dark past, as she and her friends run afoul of Undertaker Zach—a mortician who killed his family and turned his funeral home into an H.H. Holmes-style murder castle. Shot on 16mm film with a small budget in Washington, D.C., EMBALMER utilizes a hip-hop soundtrack, sly humor, and slasher mechanics to tell a deeper story of abuse, trauma, and the never-ending cycle of coping with pain. AGFA is honored to bring this powerful chapter of overlooked ’90s horror to Blu-ray for the first time ever.

A mysterious egg contains an impish creature who can grant great power, for good or evil. Brendan Bean, a kindly family man, finds himself face to face with the bizarre creature, and before long a friendship for the ages develops. Meanwhile, the depraved Benny Piazza leads his deranged militia on a violent quest to reclaim the magical homunculi.

Image began as more than just a publisher – it was a response to years of creator mistreatment, and changed comics forever. The Image Revolution tells the story of Image Comics, from its founders’ work at Marvel, through Image’s early success, company difficulties during the comics market implosion, and ultimately the publisher’s new generation of properties like The Walking Dead. Mostly seen on the gay pink circuit and recently restored by its director to its rightful place in the Japanese arthouse canon, Akihiro Suzuki’s debut takes the death of a young gay porn performer named Takachi as its starting point. Looking for an Angel follows Shinpei and Reiko as they process their friend’s disappearance, their memories coalescing into a bold exploration of grief set against the backdrop of a nostalgic, blue-hued city shot in a variety of filmic formats. As the viewer begins to piece together Takachi’s story, laden with desire for another boy named Sorao, between the cities of Tokyo and Kochi (“where the boys look like angels”), a powerful free-associative beauty emerges from a unique work described by Suzuki himself as “neither straight, gay, queer, bisexual, asexual or pornographic, but [rather] anti-heterosexist” — a film completely free of dogma and convention.

“At the time, I felt a sense of rebellion against the heterosexual-dominated world, and wanted to portray sexuality and identity through an ambiguity that cannot be categorized,” says director Akihiro Suzuki. “I wanted to make a 35mm film like an 8mm film, mix various visual media, and include people of diverse sexualities around me in it.” — Akihiro Suzuki

In 1937 after The Second Sino-Japanese War breaks out a soldier and a young woman have an awkward meet cute in darkness under a bridge as they seek refuge during a bomb raid. Although they can’t see each other’s faces they promise to meet again after the dust settles. Ten years later the soldier, now a burgeoning songwriter and tuba-player in a marching band, is back in town desperately searching for his would-be soulmate. As fate would have it they end up living in the same building unbeknownst to each other. Through a series of mishaps he mistakes her new ingénue roommate for his love interest and wacky love triangle hijinks ensue. Consummate auteur Tsui Hark almost singlehandedly reinvented Hong Kong cinema in the 80’s and 90’s with uber-kinetic genre opuses, amping up cinematic spectacle whether with special effects or sheer unbridled energy. This Hong Kong styled homage to the screwball comedies of yesteryear features black belt level slapstick and delightfully droll romcom shenanigans. With striking mise en scene and inspired production design Shanghai Blues is, “…luscious, loving and a lot of fun…one of Tsui Hark’s most enjoyable works,” (Richard James Havis, South China Morning Post).

Fancy Dance: Popular punk rock singer Yohei (Masahiro Motoki, Departures) agrees to become a Buddhist monk for a year in order to inherit his family’s lucrative temple. With his head fully shaved he leaves behind his aggressive girlfriend and other worldly desires for an ascetic lifestyle in the countryside. There he is teamed up with a quirky cast of characters, including his younger brother, who becomes a monastic heartthrob of the fanatical high school girls nearby. While life is hard at first with endless duties and harassment by the higher-ups, pretty soon Yohei discovers that even the senior monks have found ways to buck the system. Some of the nefarious activities of the novice and seasoned monks include dating a woman on the sly, cavorting at hostess bars outside campus grounds, hording candies and other secular antics. When Yohei’s estranged girlfriend comes to drag him back to secular life he finds himself at a crossroads. The sophomore feature by Masayuki Suo (Shall We Dance?) is a sublime hangout comedy whose “mix of belly laughs, slapstick, sex jokes and satire pushes towards a predictably serene, spiritual conclusion” (Time Out).

The restoration of FANCY DANCE? was done by Tokyo Koon Co. Ltd., and supervised by Yuichi Nagata. The original camera negative underwent a 4K scan by Imagica Entertainment Media Services, Inc. (Scanity by Digital Film Technology)

Sumo Do, Sumo Don’t: College student Shuhei (Masahiro Motoki, Departures) finds out he is lacking a few credits for graduation. Shuhei begrudgingly joins the team, which includes one member, the eccentric repeat student Aoki, and the pretty club manager Natsuko. They are soon joined by a ragtag group of new members including an outspoken British exchange student and a tough overweight coed. Everyone seems driven by ulterior motives at first. Yet as their trials and tribulations see them grow though hilariously outrageous shenanigans, so too does the team cultivate a winning spirit for the traditional Japanese pastime. Sumo Do, Sumo Don’t finds director Masayuki Suo (Shall We Dance?) refining his themes and motifs in this “fully entertaining, sometimes laugh out loud movie about sports underdogs who rise to success” (Japan On Film).

But with the nascent videocassette market, Carolyn sees an opportunity to exploit. When Carolyn decides to cash in on the sex films of a current daytime TV actor, how will Eddie respond? A multi award-winning meta masterpiece from  writer/producer Joyce Snyder (Public Affairs, Pledge Night) and cinematographer/director Larry Revene (Wanda Whips Wall Street, Fascination), RAW TALENT combines introspective drama, outrageous action set pieces, and avant-garde editing, including subliminal imagery, to create a hardcore feature unlike anything else. Starring Jerry Butler (Star Angel) in his most acclaimed and controversial performance, along with Lisa Deleeuw (Centerspread Girls), Rhonda Jo Petty (Candy Goes to Hollywood), Joey Silvera (Climax!), and newcomer Cassandra Leigh (Playpen), this outrageous and poignant hit comes to Blu-ray from Quality X, newly restored in 4K from its 35mm camera negative, loaded with fresh extras, and completely uncut for the first time in almost 40 years.

When a pop star sensation known only as “Mr. J” disappears from the spotlight, his biggest fans go looking for him (led by adult icon Tajia Rae) and stumble into a labyrinth of filth and horror that defies reason. Because deep beneath Mr. J’s stage persona lies a subterranean cabaret crawling with werewolves, zombies, mutants, and hunchbacks, all possessed by their most wanton desires and waiting for new victims. The groupies soon find themselves swept into a hallucinatory musical of temptation and transformation, where fame becomes flesh and the shape-shifting superstar unleashes a secret sexual weapon so monstrous, so carnal, it turns screams into creams and fulfills the title’s promise in the most jaw-dropping way. When the music ends, the drilling begins!

One of the strangest adult film artifacts ever to crawl out of the 1980s, Driller is a grimy subbasement stew of MTV spectacle, perverted set pieces and monster movie tropes. Shot quickly at the height of the cultural mania created by Michael Jackson’s Thriller, this bizarre 1984 adult horror parody reaches for the stars with choreographed sound-alike dance numbers, funhouse mirror sex scenes and impressive make up effects that rival any low budget horror film of the time. This forgotten relic from the outer edges of the Reagan-era gleams with all the warped sexual excess of the 1980s – where pop culture and pornography often collided – like a hypnotic, half-remembered dream pulled right off the dusty shelves of an adult video store in the bowels of purgatory.

High school: a storied time of innocence, awakening, exploring one’s self, and the  budding of desires. After years of not seeing each other, a group of teachers and  students catch up at their ten year reunion. There, long-forgotten memories bubble up to the surface, reigniting buried passions which could never before be fulfilled. As the now older and wiser group reminisce about the times that were, they start to realize that  certain yearnings of the past will now be inescapable. The first theatrical feature film produced and distributed by pioneering hardcore video distributor VCX, famed director Anthony Spinelli’s (SexWorld, Nothing to Hide) breezy and nostalgic look at teenage lust, HIGH SCHOOL MEMORIES, offers a cast of erotic film veterans in some of their most sensual performances, including Annette Haven (Tapestry of Passion), Jamie Gillis (Dracula Sucks), Dorothy LeMay (Tropic of Desire) and John Leslie (Baby Rosemary), amongst many others. Fusing the tenderness of romance with the raw animalism of long-repressed desires, this carnal classic finally arrives on Blu-ray, restored in 4K from its original camera negative.

Jess Franco returns with more sleaze, sex and seduction in this, the fourth and final “women in prison” film Franco made for notorious exploitation movie mogul Erwin C. Dietrich (DORIANA GRAY, ROLLS ROYCE BABY).

In an unknown South American hellhole, a guerrilla army violently kidnaps sexually mature women and forces them to serve as personal prostitutes and sexual tools in their private jungle brothel.  A beautiful new bride, Angela, is kidnapped on her wedding night and soon finds herself an “inmate” in said slammer, her delicate beauty locking the unwanted attention of the sadistic and cruel lesbian warden. As the warden leers and Angela’s fellow prisoners meet gruesome ends, our heroine also finds herself attracted to the rugged leader of the local rebels. Horror, lust and lewd behaviour ensue…

A salacious, obsessive romp that ONLY Jess Franco could have made, LOVE CAMP is presented here on Blu-ray for the FIRST TIME in North America.
