Dorine, a timid and put-upon proofreader and tech expert long employed by a fashion magazine, is informed that due to budget cuts, she will be forced to work from home. Unfortunately, her home life is dominated by caring for her cruel, elderly mother, and it lacks the vitality of the office environment and its myriad personalities. But after she unintentionally electrocutes a coworker, Dorine discovers a tidy new method to fight her boredom and loneliness: murder. Secretly transporting the body of her colleague to her suburban basement, Dorine sets about looking to add new “friends” to this growing social group amid her company’s unfortunate downsizing. Pragmatically dispatching an ever-increasing number of both fellow employees and unlucky random people, Dorine maintains a convivial life with her rapidly decomposing corpses, while she’s not on the clock, of course.
The only feature film directed by internationally acclaimed and award-winning photographer Cindy Sherman, OFFICE KILLER is a delectably bloody, tightly-paced contemporary slasher that offers a grimly humorous take on the serial killer thriller and a wry look at the corporate environment of the 1990s. With its bleak, lyrical photography and a score by Lounge Lizards co-founder Evan Lurie, it features Emmy®-winner Carol Kane (When a Stranger Calls) as Dorine, along with Molly Ringwald (The Breakfast Club), Jeanne Tripplehorn (Basic Instinct, TV’s Big Love), and a guest appearance from Eric Bogosian (The Stuff). Vinegar Syndrome is overjoyed to at last offer the 4K UHD and Blu-ray debut of this criminally underseen horror gem, newly restored in 4K from its original 35mm camera negative and packed with extras, including all-new interviews with its cast and crew.

Welcome Vinegar Syndrome Labs (VSL) to the VS Sub-Label family! As with each of our sub-labels we are hoping to expand and defy expectations with the diversity of films we restore and release. As the name implies, VSL will serve as a kind of testing area for releasing genres and eras of film that one might not immediately expect to come from VS. The ultimate objective of VSL will be to see if these types of films will find an audience, and if so, pursue and release more of them…and even if not, still serve as a means of restoring more of the weird, rare, and unusual movies you might not expect from Vinegar Syndrome.
This special limited edition spot gloss slipcover (designed by Steak Mtn.) is limited to 4,000 units and is only available on our website and at select indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them.
Before the reckless, short-tempered surgeon Dr. Bruckner was able to continue his controversial neurological experiments, wherein he applied shock therapy on comatose patients, he wound up in a fiery head-on collision with a gasoline truck. Brought back to his own hospital, gravely wounded, he lies in a coma for seven years, until one New Year’s Eve, when he suddenly awakens, ready to exact bloody vengeance fueled by his years’ worth of pent-up rage. After massacring several hospital staff, Bruckner sets his sights on a young orderly named Peter, tracking him to a quiet suburban neighborhood. Blinded by cold bloodlust, anyone and everyone who crosses Bruckner’s path soon meets a grisly demise, as Peter, his neighbor and her kid brother, must figure out how to survive the wrath of this deformed and demented doctor.
The feature-film debut of multi-talented Dutch director Dorna X. van Rouveroy (An Amsterdam Tale), INTENSIVE CARE is the first and only Dutch horror film directed by a woman to date. Inspired heavily by the style and structure of 80s horror, and specifically created for the export market, it would remain virtually unreleased in the English world despite becoming a hit in the Netherlands and Belgium, in part due to its casting of two Dutch teen idols, actor/TV presenter Nada van Nie and pop star Koen Wauters. Packed with dramatic, gory kills and classic slasher ambience, it features prolific veteran actor George Kennedy (Demonwarp) as Bruckner, as well as supporting roles played by Dolf de Vries (The 4th Man), Jules Croiset (Amsterdamned), and Dick van den Toorn (Pastorale 1943). Vinegar Syndrome Labs is eager to revive this rollicking Euro-chiller in a new, director-supervised restoration of its English-language Director’s Cut.

Strange Cinema | 1988 | 88 min | 1.66:1
Directed by Anders Palm
Starring: Gregory Cox, Fiona Evans, Edward Brayshaw, Debbie Lee London
This special limited edition spot gloss variant slipcover (designed by Robert Sammelin) is limited to 3,000 units and is only available on our website and at select indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them. The original limited edition slipcover (designed by Chris Garofalo) was limited to 2,000 units and is sold out.
Jackson (Gregory Cox) is your run-of-the-mill, hockey mask wearing psychotic killer. Hideously deformed, he spends his time stalking and brutally murdering over-sexed young people, in a variety of nasty methods. But then he meets Shelly (Fiona Evans), a young blind woman who appreciates him as a person (it helps that she can’t see the carnage he leaves at every turn). Finding himself falling in love for the first time, Jackson decides that it might be time to finally hang up his cutlery and settle into a happy life of domestic bliss. But can he really overcome his bloodthirsty impulses?
A biting horror-comedy from director Anders Palm and producer Mark Cutforth, UNMASKED PT. 25 (aka HANDS OF DEATH) cleverly plays off of every 80s horror cliche (along with satirizing a number of indie film tropes, for good measure), while reveling in some of the most gruesome gore effects which can be found in a post-nasties British made film. Vinegar Syndrome is proud to rescue this under-seen cult classic and bring it to Blu-ray for the first time.

Forgotten Gialli: Volume Nine
⍟ Vinegar Syndrome ⍟
[ VS-531 BOX ]
1991-1993 | 90/92/89 min | 1.66:1 | English Mono, Italian Mono
Directed by Bruno Mattei, Pierfrancesco Campanella, & Alfonso Brescia
Starring: Monica Carpanese, Emy Valentino, Fausto Lombardi, Gabriele Gori, Monica Carpanese, Tomas Arana, Gioia Scola, Natasha Hovey, Alida Valli, Barbara Scoppa, David Hess, Florence Guérin, Rik Battaglia, Riccardo Parisio Perrotti, Sonia Topazio
The 1990s proved to be a curious and complicated era for the giallo, with many films made for export markets and direct-to-video, while the form itself was tested with directors attempting new ideas and folding modern trends into their plots. Nevertheless, around the rise of the erotic thriller and despite the contraction of the Italian genre film market overall, the true spirit of the genre soldiered on, still alive and vibrant in the three rare gialli assembled here, all seeing their Blu-ray debuts.
This limited edition box set (designed by Robert Sammelin) is limited to 6,000 units and is only available on our website and at select indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them.
MADNESS
Giovanna is a successful comic artist, and her brutal Doctor Dark comic has made her rich and somewhat notorious. While she and the comic are both under fire for possibly inciting readers to violence, a real-life murderer suddenly begins carving out the eyes of their victims only to deliver them to Giovanna. Under continuing pressure from her manager and the public, she flees to the country, eager to clear her head and distance herself from the fact that someone is making gruesome reality out of her fiction. Not only does the terror follow her, but now someone is calling Giovanna to menace her under the guise of Doctor Dark. Will the police find the killer before they reach Giovanna, or will all this nervous exhaustion do her in first?
An unusually sincere effort from the prolific genre workhorse Bruno Mattei, MADNESS (Occhi senza volto aka Eyes Without a Face) plays with several giallo motifs and a few contemporary thriller elements, while delivering plentiful gore and dramatic slayings. Shot by cinematographer Luigi Ciccarese (Ænigma), it features a slew of Mattei on-screen regulars, including Emy Valentino (Phantom of Death), Fausto Lombardi (Terror Express), Gabriele Gori (Convent of Sinners), and an intense lead performance by Monica Carpanese (Anthropophagus II). Vinegar Syndrome is eager to deliver to you this rarely seen late giallo entry, newly restored from its original negative.
BUGIE ROSSE
Television journalist Marco knows the importance of a good story, a terrific scoop, and he’s willing to do the deep research to secure his reputation. When investigating murders in his city’s gay underground, he doggedly sticks to posing as a man lurking in the park for night-time tricks who may give him a lead, in spite of his own marked aversion to same sex contact. Although he gets arrested after each murder, and even if he’s increasingly suspicious to the police, Marco stays on the story. His connections with the paper and a local prosecutor can only keep him safe for so long, and things look dire amid increasing tension with his wife and the psychic weight of the job. But he’s just come across an attractive male hustler who may provide him with the clues he needs. That is, provided Marco can uncover the deep secrets that the killer will stop at nothing to protect.
The giallo loyalist Pierfrancesco Campanella (Bad Inclination) wrote and directed BUGIE ROSSE (Red Lies aka The Final Scoop) while still in his twenties, blending the psychosexual traditions of the style with modern technology such as IRC message boards. Portraying the weight of closeted life and sexual anxiety with stylized scenes of swingers bars and dark alleys as shot by veteran Mario Vulpiani (Watch Me When I Kill), the film also features a rare score from prolific soundtrack conductor Natale Massara (conductor of Blow Out and Body Double), and a cast including Tomas Arana (The Church), Gioia Scola (Too Beautiful to Die), Natasha Hovey (Demons), and Alida Valli (Suspiria). Vinegar Syndrome ardently presents this inspired giallo rarity newly scanned from its original camera negative.
MURDER IN BLUE LIGHT
Top model Starlet works for some of the highest-priced ad campaigns in New York, even if part of the job is occasionally fighting off a grabby client. But she regularly drops out of her high-fashion life to secretly turn tricks as Sherry, a dominatrix and role player for men looking to play out their oddest kinks with her. She doesn’t need the money; instead, she’s hunting for a certain man. Meanwhile, a rash of stabbing murders keeps occurring around her. Grizzled, sarcastic NYPD sergeant Flanagan is the only one who can keep Starlet out of harm’s way, though she refuses to level with him, and instead plays detective herself. When Flanagan keeps coming up with nothing, despite constantly rousting local prostitutes, he decides to apply pressure elsewhere. With creeps from both the high and low elements of New York life, and a serial murderer about, how much longer can Starlet push her luck?
A film rooted in the sleazy New York trends of Italian cinema from a decade prior, MURDER IN BLUE LIGHT showcases the ability of veteran writer/director Alfonso Brescia (Naked Girl Murdered in the Park) to jump into any required genre. Featuring a good deal of actual New York City street scenes, including Times Square, it leans into the sleaze with a twisty backstory and hints of a police procedural through its US star, David Hess (Last House on the Left). Also featuring Florence Guérin (Faceless) as Starlet, Rik Battaglia (Nightmare Castle), and Riccardo Parisio Perrotti (The Psychic), Vinegar Syndrome presents this obscure late entry in the “amateur detective” giallo newly restored from its original camera negative.

Concerned that their latest production isn’t scary enough for modern audiences, the makers of a trashy horror movie titled Dirty Blood call in a spirit medium to host a seance for the cast and crew, hoping this will add a little authenticity to the proceedings. However, the producers get a little more than they bargained for when the medium inadvertently summons the spirit of the notorious Victorian-era serial killer Jack the Ripper. As filming presses on, the real horror commences when various members of the production start winding up brutally murdered. Could this be the ongoing work of a sadistic maniac who’s been preying on prostitutes in the area, or could something much more terrifying – and supernatural – be afoot?
One in a series of films made under the “Lucio Fulci presents” banner (originally developed under the title I maestri del thriller), which sought to capitalize on the name of Italy’s Godfather of Gore, MASSACRE is one of the standout entries in the cycle and a pleasingly lurid slasher effort helmed by Burial Ground director Andrea Bianchi. Far sleazier than many of its late 80s horror competitors and packed full of bare skin, lesbian intrigue and hack-and-slash action (not to mention a lively score from Luigi Ceccarelli, who virtually rehashed his music from Rats: Night of Terror), Vinegar Syndrome is thrilled to unfurl MASSACRE in its UHD premiere, newly restored in 4K from its original 16mm camera negative and loaded with new special features.

Professor Kansas Bowling invites you to come with her and explore all of the serious, everyday problems facing teenage girls; that is, abuse, rape, molestation, and murder. Leaving no stone unturned, she introduces a series of interwoven case studies illustrating how otherwise innocent young ladies are corrupted and led astray into the treacherous and violent world of lecherous older men, crazed teenage psychopaths, deviants, perverts, and maybe one or two seemingly “nice” guys…or are they? Is any teenage girl safe from such diabolical temptation?
A grimy, modern-day twist on “Schoolgirl Report” films by way of Faces of Death, CUDDLY TOYS was a years in the making passion project from underground auteur Kansas Bowling (B.C. Butcher), which features an electrifying soundtrack including hits by The Monkees and Scott Walker. Taking its name from the Lumière Brothers invention of the same name, Cinématographe is a new sub-label from Vinegar Syndrome that seeks to fill gaps in the canon of American cinema. Offering a mix of auteur driven studio films produced during the New Hollywood era of the late 1960s and 70s all the way through the indie boom of the 1980s and 90s, Cinématographe will explore the wide breadth of American moviemaking, spanning numerous genres and scales of production. Curated and produced by Vinegar Syndrome’s Justin LaLiberty, each limited edition release will be housed in a specially designed, cloth-bound, media book with embossed foil titles and custom molded disc trays accompanied by a slipcase featuring newly commissioned art and an individually numbered J-card.
This special limited edition J-card MediaBook slipcase (designed by Tom Ralston) is limited to 3,000 units and is only available on our website and at select indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them.
Following the death of his partner, brash NYPD cop Eddie Ryan (Robert Duvall, The Godfather) swears vengeance, going on a violent quest through the streets of 1970s New York City to find his assailants. His methods prove so hostile, and racist, that he is forced to resign from the police, rendering him a vigilante hellbent on justice. Ryan’s pursuit of take-no-prisoners fury puts him in the crosshairs of drug kingpins and revolutionaries, not to mention the very department that he was once a part of.
Inspired by real life NYPD detective Eddie Egan, who was also the inspiration for William Friedkin’s The French Connection (1971) and its non-fiction source, Badge 373 is a much more raw portrayal of inner city violence and New York at a point of transition going into the mid-1970s. Long living in the shadow of Friedkin’s film, as well as other more popular New York City set cop films of the era (including the same year’s Serpico, by Sidney Lumet), Badge 373 is a vital time capsule of old New York, anchored by a fiery performance from Robert Duvall and energetic direction from noted New Hollywood producer Howard W. Koch (A New Leaf). Cinématographe is proud to present this long underseen entry in 70s crime cinema in a brand new 4K restoration from its original camera negative.

Of a pair with his 8mm debut Saint Terrorism — in which wayward youths and sex workers navigate attraction and murderous intent — Masashi Yamamoto’s jishu-eiga (self-produced) breakthrough Carnival in the Night unfurls with a palpable sense of rage and abandon, capturing images of Shinjuku’s underground and transforming its DIY scene into a purgatorial and claustrophobic realm. Aspiring punk rocker and single mother Kumi (Kumiko Ota) drops off her child with her ex-husband and the world is bled of colour, beginning a phantasmagorical journey of self-discovery and self-destruction; a pitch black look at the margins of society contrasted by a backhanded, yet no less poignant, reflection on responsibility and motherhood.
Yamamoto’s film — shot in an hypnotizing vérité style — propels Kumi forward as she crosses paths with a variety of addicts, squatters and bomb-makers, her march ‘till dawn marked by senseless acts of violence. Anticipating the squatter’s eden depicted in Robinson’s Garden as well as the anti-capitalist global antics of What’s Up Connection, Carnival in the Night also prefigures Japanese punk cinema classics such as Sogo Ishii’s Burst City (1982) and Shinya Tsukamoto’s Bullet Ballet (1998). Saint Terrorism and Carnival in the Night, presented here restored from their original 8mm and 16mm elements, showcase Masashi Yamamoto at his most anarchic and transgressive.
“These are Yamamoto’s politics: to squat, to squander, and to soil reality. Whether anyone takes notice is beyond him; his unceasing state of resistance exists beyond society and blooms by virtue of its separation from its norms.” — Nicolas Pedrero-Setzer, Screen Slate

2020, 2024 | 253 min (combined) | 1.78:1 | Romanian DTS-HD MA 5.1, 2.0

Starring: Various
Founded in 2013, Big World Pictures is a non-profit distribution outfit dedicated to bringing the best in world cinema to film enthusiasts across the United States. Previous releases include films by Radu Jude, Tamer El Said, Maya Vitkova, Jean-Gabriel Périot, Julia Murat, Tsai Ming-liang and Eric Rohmer. This special limited edition slipcover (designed by Elizabeth Yoo) is limited to 500 units and is only available on our website and at select indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them.
Eight Postcards from Utopia is a found-footage documentary assembled exclusively out of post-socialist Romanian advertisements. Drawing from the debris of Romania’s long transition period, the film speaks about love and death, the human body and its frailty, the natural and the supernatural and of course, socialism and capitalism. Bouncing between found poetry and an outdated encyclopedia, between trash art and Summa theologiae, EIGHT POSTCARDS sees Radu Jude teaming up with philosopher Christian Ferencz-Flatz to make another hilarious and unforgiving take down of meta capitalist mythology.
The Exit of the Trains is a documentary essay composed entirely of archival photographs and documents of the first big massacre of the Jews in Romania: In the city of Iași, on the 29th of June 1941, more than 10,000 Jews were killed–first by bullets, than by asphyxiation in freight trains.
The film, which is an attempt to use the montage of archive materials in order to offer a deep and special view of history, has two parts:
The first part of the film could be titled “the encyclopedia of the dead”: photographs of the people who were eventually killed by the Romanian army and by civilians are accompanied by voices who recite the documents related to their fate in the massacre: witness accounts, testimonies from the post-war trials, interviews with survivors, private diaries etc.
The second part–shorter–represents a montage of the remaining photographs of the actual massacre (taken mostly by the German soldiers who were in town).

After more than two decades of exile in Hollywood, master filmmaker Fritz Lang triumphantly returned to his native Germany to direct this lavish two-part adventure tale from a story he co-authored almost forty years earlier. Called to India by the Maharajah of Eschnapur, architect Harald Berger (Paul Hubschmid) falls in love with beautiful temple dancer Seetha (Debra Paget), who is promised to the Maharajah. Their betrayal ignites the ruler’s wrath, and the lovers are forced to flee into the desert for a series of spectacular adventures. Featuring breathtaking location photography and nail-biting suspense, this epic is highlighted by Paget’s erotic temple dance, a battle to the death with a man-eating tiger, sandstorms, a cave of lepers, and a bloody palace rebellion. Together these films provide a cinematic link between classic silent serials and the modern action thrills of Indiana Jones and The Mummy. Previously available in America as “Journey to the Lost City,” a radically condensed 90-minute version, these exotic masterpieces are presented in this 2-disc boxed set newly restored to their original splendor.

And Maria (Stephanie Arianne), a Filipino care worker living overseas, reluctantly accepts a position with PLAN 75 to send money home to her ailing daughter. On the surface, the plan and its hawkers exude a kindness that serves as the film’s chilling vision of bureaucratic indifference and our increasing loss of interconnectedness. However, Hayakawa’s view is far from grim, as these characters soon learn to fully reckon with their own lives and what it truly means to live.

Welcome to the special edition Blu-ray of… SNOWY BING BONGS ACROSS THE NORTH STAR COMBAT ZONE. This blissfully bonkers whatzit from unclassifiable dance-comedy trio Cocoon Central Dance Team – Sunita Mani (GLOW, MR. ROBOT), Tallie Medel (EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE), and Eleanore Pienta (A DIFFERENT MAN) – is part psychotropic performance art spectacle, part absurdist sketch show. The three Bing Bongs lounge about, fight beachballs, and periodically break into wondrously strange dance routines, with outer space interludes, a serious consideration of doctor boners, and a 90s-style girl group meltdown along the way. It all plays like a live action cartoon piped in from a cotton-candy-colored alternate universe. Produced by the Academy Award-winning Daniels (EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE). Featuring Kate Berlant (WOULD IT KILL YOU TO LAUGH?), Joe Pera (JOE PERA TALKS WITH YOU), Keith Poulson (I BLAME SOCIETY), and Reggie Watts (COMEDY BANG BANG). After making a misjudged advance towards her mother’s boyfriend, 16-year-old Heidi (Abbie Cornish) flees her home for the small Australian ski town of Jindabyne. Entranced by the startling beauty o.f the wintry landscapes and falling snow, she begins to create a new life for herself. With little money or practical experience, she accepts a job at a petrol station and finds lodging with Irene (Lynette Curran). When she falls for Joe (Sam Worthington), the son of a wealthy local farmer, her self-destructive tendencies re-surface, and her fragile new world threatens to come tumbling down. Experience the mesmerizing works of one of underground cinema’s most eccentric and unique female video auteurs. Writer, director, and martial arts black belt Pamela Sutch began her career as an actress for New Jersey’s W.A.V.E. 25th anniversary special edition
Often discussed, but rarely understood, collectors are driven by an obsessiveness that mainstream society struggles to understand. Through conversations with dozens of devoted record collectors, Vinyl offers an unblinking and amusing look at this phenomenon, exploring the personal struggles that lead to collecting, the negative ways it impacts some, and the essential joy it brings to others, helping them achieve a sense of meaning, purpose, and comfort.
The first feature-length documentary from one-of-a-kind filmmaker Alan Zweig, Vinyl introduced his trademark idiosyncrasies and confessional approach fully formed. Resisting traditional notions of likability, he reveals as much about himself as he does about his subjects, which include a mix of everyday vinyl devotees alongside cultural figures like Bruce LaBruce, Guy Maddin, Don McKellar, and Harvey Pekar. But even as Zweig reckons with the debilitating side of collecting, he reveals his own deep commitment to the subject with an honesty that will resonate with collectors and non-collectors alike.
