Inspired by his vivid dreams of flying through space and elaborate electrical grids, and fueled by comic books and classic sci-fi, 8th-grader Ben fantasizes about a way to explore the Universe. When his friend Wolfgang manages to build a matching circuit board from Ben’s hazily-sketched diagrams of his dreams, the board eerily begins to program itself, resulting in precisely the technology they need to secretly cobble together a real spacecraft in a backyard. Along with their friend Darren, they venture out of suburbia and blast into the cosmos seeking whatever alien life they can find — perhaps even something which was reaching out to them all along.

A sentimental adventure of childhood wonder and the regenerative cycle of pop culture (and B-movies), which links ’80s childhoods to the fantasy of ’50s sci-fi, Joe Dante’s EXPLORERS shows the Piranha director’s unique skill in blending genres. Featuring childhood film debuts from Ethan Hawke (Dead Poets Society) and River Phoenix (Sneakers), with Robert Picardo (The Howling) and, naturally, Dick Miller (Gremlins), it also boasts extensive use of a broad range of effects by Rob Bottin and visuals from Industrial Light & Magic, as well as an epic score by Jerry Goldsmith (Alien). Vinegar Syndrome Ultra is proud to present this cult film to 4K UHD in both its theatrical and home video versions, newly scanned and restored from its 35mm original camera negative, and featuring a brand new extended making-of documentary produced exclusively for this release.

Paramount | 1982 | 109 min | 1.85:1 | English DTS-HD MA 1.0
Directed by Robert Altman
Starring: Cher, Sandy Dennis, Karen Black, Kathy Bates, Mark Patton, Sudie Bond

Taking its name from the Lumière Brothers invention of the same name, Cinématographe is a new sub-label from Vinegar Syndrome that seeks to fill gaps in the canon of American cinema. Offering a mix of auteur driven studio films produced during the New Hollywood era of the late 1960s and 70s all the way through the indie boom of the 1980s and 90s, Cinématographe will explore the wide breadth of American moviemaking, spanning numerous genres and scales of production. Curated and produced by Vinegar Syndrome’s Justin LaLiberty, each limited edition release will be housed in a specially designed, cloth-bound, media book with embossed foil titles and custom molded disc trays accompanied by a slipcase featuring newly commissioned art and an individually numbered J-card.

This special limited edition J-card MediaBook slipcase (designed by Michael DeForge) is limited to 3,000 units and is only available on our website and at select indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them. (Note: this Limited Edition includes a 40 page booklet)

The Disciples of James Dean, a small town James Dean fan club, planned to meet at the Woolworth’s five and dime store in McCarthy, Texas on the twentieth anniversary of his death. On that date, September 30th, 1975, shop owner Juanita (Sudie Bond, Silkwood), welcomes the two remaining club members in town—Sissy (Cher, Moonstruck) and Mona (Sandy Dennis, That Cold Day In the Park)—to her shop for the memorial. As other out of town members arrive, so does the mysterious Joanne (Karen Black, Nashville). Through one long, hot day, The Disciples of James Dean unravel the mysteries, discuss the events and reconcile the truths of the past twenty years.

Adapted for the screen by Ed Graczyk from his stage play of the same name, Come Back to the 5 & Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean was the first of many stage-to-screen adaptations directed by Robert Altman (including his next three feature films: Streamers, Secret Honor and Fool for Love). Altman, having directed the Broadway show of Come Back to the 5 & Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean, brought his stage cast back for the film adaptation, all reprising their Broadway roles, with Kathy Bates (Misery), Marta Heflin (A Perfect Couple) and Mark Patton (A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge) rounding out the ensemble. One of the great American films of the 1980s, Come Back to the 5 & Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean is a bittersweet ode to nostalgia, small town life and friendship while also featuring groundbreaking trans representation in Karen Black’s portrayal of Joanne. Cinématographe is proud to present the world 4K UHD debut of Robert Altman’s oft-overlooked slice of Americana in a new restoration from its original camera negatives.

[ DPIX-011 CASE ]

1968, 1969 | 71 min, 76 min | 1.37:1, 1.85:1 | English DTS-HD MA 1.0
Directed by Byron Mabe, Peter Perry
Starring: Luanne Roberts,Emily Barlow,Linda Stiles,Harvey Shain

From nudies to roughies to ultra weird regional curiosities, the sexploitation world welcomed any filmmaker working in any genre, so long as the limits of nudity and sex on screen were pushed as far as they could go – but never all the way. DISTRIBPIX, one of the legendary names in the genre (and whose extensive library will be the backbone of this line), will offer single, double, and even triple feature Blu-rays highlighting works from every corner and crevice of softcore smut, from the dawn of nudie cuties to the all-but-hard 70s, with plentiful lost and never on disc films along the way.

This special limited edition Blu-ray comes with a spot gloss hard slipcase + slipcover combo (designed by Rich Long), includes a 40-page perfect bound book, and is limited to 2,500 units. It is only available on our website and at select indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them.

During the 1960s, producer David F. Friedman’s ongoing quest to elevate the quality of sexploitation production led to numerous period pieces and costume comedies. Among his most lavish such efforts were THE LUSTFUL TURK (1968) and THE JOYS OF JEZEBEL (1969), each of which has been newly restored in 4K from their 35mm original camera negatives and come to Blu-ray for the very first time from Something Weird + Distribpix.

In THE LUSTFUL TURK (1968), the English aristocrat Emily Barlow is en route to India along with her handmaiden, when pirates seize hold of their ship. Taking the ladies back to their harem, their captors force them to partake in the most unspeakably erotic torments, which Emily reports in detail to her friend Sylvia back home via regularly written letters. Amid the depravity and barbarism of the world in which she’s now held captive, the debauched Emily slowly calculates how she might take her revenge. Directed by Byron Mabe (She Freak), this raucous and sensual costume saga was penned by Friedman himself, and features Linda Stiles (Lee Frost’s The Animal) and Harvey Shain (Fugitive Girls).

Jezebel herself has just arrived in hell, but quickly strikes a deal with Lucifer in THE JOYS OF JEZEBEL (1969), so that she can return to earth provided she delivers to Lucifer the beautiful virgin Rachel. However, since the cunning Jezebel has scores to settle, she uses her powers to switch bodies with Rachel, sending the beautiful innocent back to hell in her place! While Lucifer searches for Rachel in hell, Jezebel is free to exact her revenge. An exquisitely beautiful and extraordinarily colorful sexy comedy, from director Peter Perry (Kiss Me Quick), THE JOYS OF JEZEBEL stars Luanne Roberts (101 Acts of Love) and Dixie Donovan (The Notorious Cleopatra).

In his mid-30s, Abe (Jordan Gelber) clings to the trappings of his adolescence, including the extensive collection of toys and action figures adorning his boyhood bedroom. Still living with his parents Jackie (Christopher Walken) and Phyllis (Mia Farrow), Abe works for his increasingly disappointed Dad and spends evenings ruthlessly trouncing his Mom at backgammon. His older brother Richard’s (Justin Bartha) success as a California doctor only feeds Abe’s resentment and rage at his family over his failures.

When Abe meets Miranda (Selma Blair), whose personal and professional disasters have sent her scrambling back to the safety of her parents’ suburban home, he sees what he thinks is a chance at true love. Abe throws himself into pursuing the overmedicated Miranda, convincing her to marry him after a whirlwind courtship. But, as the couple haltingly prepares to start a new life together, the film swerves into Abe’s subconscious, where his crippling self-doubt and dark fears begin to undermine his nearly realized dream of a fuller life.

David “The Rock” Nelson Collection: Volume 3

[ SC-059 SLIP ]

2002 | 137 min | 1.33:1 | English DTS-HD MA 2.0
Directed by David “The Rock” Nelson
Starring: David “The Rock” Nelson, Janet Okulanis, Ron “Rondo” Adams, Herbert Bussewitz, Andrew Moritz, Vernon Nelson

Saturn’s Core Audio & Video is a New Jersey based home video label devoted to releasing underground oddities and shot on video cinema on VHS, and now, blu-ray discs! In partnership with OCN Distribution, Saturn’s Core will exhume forgotten or under-seen genre cinema from the 80s and 90s, with an emphasis on SOV horror features. Vinegar Syndrome’s sister company, OCN Distribution, is thrilled to be representing this diverse and unique home video line!

This special limited edition slipcover is limited to 1,000 units and is only available on our website and at select indie retailers. Absolutely no major retailers will be stocking them.

Dubbed “The Ed Wood of the 21st Century”, Des Plaines, Illinois based former marine and Golden Gloves boxer turned gonzo filmmaker David “The Rock” Nelson has been churning out his bizarre and mesmerizing brand of backyard monster movies for over 30 years. Often playing multiple onscreen roles simultaneously while utilizing local friends, his parents, and his girlfriend Janet Okulanis as his co-stars, “The Rock” has amassed a robust SOV filmography and persevered undaunted in the face nonexistent funds, unfavorable reviews, and outdated video equipment. Nelson’s work represents a singular viewing experience like no other: landing somewhere between the earnest monster romps of Paul Naschy and the eccentric video diaries of George Kuchar; where the filmmakers’ real life day to day activities and interactions sometimes outweigh the forwarding of the narrative. Equipped with dime store rubber fright masks and his camcorder, David “The Rock” Nelson has unapologetically crafted a legacy that remains an inspirational testament to the spirit of fulfilling your cinematic dreams at any cost.

In Monster Tales (2002), David “The Rock” Nelson is your Rod Serling style host presenting three terrifying tales of backyard monsters run amok! In the first tale, Nosferatu (Nelson) rises from the grave in broad daylight, transforms into a rubber bat, and wreaks havoc on unsuspecting Chicago bar patrons and the Monster Bash cookout! In the second, the marauding Tor (Nelson in a rubber Tor Johnson mark) terrorizes a cemetery, a library art exhibit, and his own parents amidst repeated outhouse bathroom breaks. Lastly, two werewolves fight a bloody duel to the death after a mad scientist (Nelson again) concocts and consumes a secret wolf man spawning plasma potion. All while the bumbling Detective Rock (Nelson yet again) remains futile; binging sweets, watching monster movies, and denying the existence of the monsters in question. Featuring celebrity “appearances” by Forrest J. Ackerman, George Stover, Ric Flair, Mancow Muller, & Tommy Chong, Saturn’s Core is proud to present Nelson’s SOV anthology epic Monster Tales along with a host of additional brain-smashing extras and madness hand picked by The Rock; including his classic short Mummy A.D. 1993 and hours upon hours of java guzzling special features.

Three spunky teenage girls decide to ditch their parents and private school for a long weekend getaway in Portsea. But, on the way to the seaside resort town they encounter two menacing black panel vans – and their bid for a harmless adventure turns into a chilling white line pursuit that climaxes at the schoolgirls’ remote beach house. Thrown into this nightmare is Pamela, a stunning blonde who has defrauded her employee out of $20,000. On the run and lying low, she joins the girls in a terrifying battle for survival as the terror, suspense and body count rises.

Released in the U.S. under the far more generic title Fair Game, Desolation Angels boasts bitumen-burning chases, a harrowing game of cat-and-mouse and star turns from Kerry Mack (Hostage) and the alluring Karen West (1980 Playmate of the Year) – accompanied by classic tracks from Cold Chisel. Considered the rarest of Ozploitation gems – Desolation Angels is presented in a new 2K transfer approved by the film’s cinematographer Ellery Ryan (Death in Brunswick, Grievous Bodily Harm).

In her ambitious follow up to Maybe It’s Love, Angie Chen offers a rebuke to the colonial imagination of films such as The World of Suzie Wong (1960). Instead, she brings the Hong Kong of the 50s and 60s to life on her own terms with the story of Shui-Mei (Patricia Ha), a “salt water girl” from the outskirts of the city, who finds a way out of poverty in the Red Light district of Wan Chai, Hong Kong. Over the years, she rises through the ranks, discovering a world of equal hardship and sisterly camaraderie, where colourful characters abound – among them Jimmy (Anthony Wong, in his debut role), a mixed-race kid looking for his father in the crowd of thirsty American sailors. Penned by John Chan Koon Chung (My Heart Is That Eternal Rose), My Name Ain’t Suzie brings a New Wave sensibility to the waning years of the Shaw Brothers Studio with a decade spanning epic that resourcefully reconstructs a bygone era of Cantonese cinema. A rags-to-riches story blending romance and brothel drama, Chen’s film is above all a tale of feminine resilience at the nexus of historical events and shifting colonial powers.

While practicing, he becomes transfixed by the figure skaters who share the ice rink, particularly Sakura, a rising star from Tokyo. Antiporno: Kyoko, a young artist with a sadomasochistic streak, wreaks havoc on everyone that she encounters, but her absolute worst behavior is reserved for her simpering older assistant Noriko, whom she routinely humiliates in increasingly kinky ways. That is, until their sense of reality gets upended in an exuberantly reflexive twist.

An outrageous, rabble-rousing contribution to the Roman Porno redux series, Antiporno is an expectation-defying, antic study in blighted eroticism, damaged psyches, and shifting power dynamics, set against outlandishly theatrical backdrops; “a feverish op-art dream that turns on us at every corner.” (Slant Magazine)

Aroused by Gymnopedies: A modern take on the “Roman Porno” genre from director Isao Yukisada, Aroused by Gymnopedies is an “engaging and ultimately touching portrait of love, loneliness and loss of youth” (Variety).

Shinji, a middle-aged film director, is trapped in a seemingly hopeless cycle of creative crisis and self-destruction. After his failure making art films, he now finds himself shooting low-budget pornography as a means to get by. Over the span of one week, he embarks on a series of sexual encounters that put his work, relationships and happiness in jeopardy.

Dawn of the Felines: Dawn of the Felines is a haunting, empathetic journey through the nocturnal world of three sex workers navigating the neon-soaked street of Ikebukuro, Tokyo. Each night brings new encounters – eccentric clients, dangerous fetishes and the looming threat of police crackdowns – while each dawn finds them wrestling with loneliness, survival, and the search for meaning in a city that rarely looks back. Directed by Kazuya Shiraishi (The Devil’s Path, Twisted Justice, Bushido), Dawn of the Felines is a “suitably melancholy” (South China Morning Post) tribute to Noboru Tanaka’s classic Roman Porno film Night of the Felines. Modern and unflinching, Shiraishi’s update to the genre famously created by the Nikkatsu film studio in the 1970s offers a portrait of women living on the edge of society while negotiating their agency, connection, and dignity.

Wet Woman in the Wind: A tornado of unbridled sexual desire is unleashed when a free spirited seductress sets her sights on a reclusive playwright. Wet Woman in the Wind highlights the id in its stream of consciousness tale. Having a character who overturns the inhibitions of all that cross her path with wild abandon allows this striking entry in Nikkatsu’s Roman Porno Reboot series to transcend its sexploitation raison d’être. Director Akihiko Shiota cuts to the chase, taking advantage of the subgenre’s sparse requirements: a sex scene every ten minutes with a total running time no longer than 80 minutes. What ensues is a gleefully anarchic plot that explores the human psyche through sexuality within a psychodrama that is as hilarious as it is titillating. Featuring a tour de force performance by Yuki Mamiya as the eponymous agent provocateur, Wet Woman in the Wind is a “hugely enjoyable film – and often, partly because of its relative demureness, a fairly arousing one, with female pleasure and male discomfiture foremost on the menu” (Screen International).

White Lily: Celebrated ceramic artist Tokiko (Kaori Yamaguchi) takes Haruka (Rin Asuka), a troubled teenage runaway, into her home where she becomes her apprentice. When Tokiko’s husband dies, Haruka promises to remain by her side, and the two begin a romantic, but volatile relationship. Overcome by sorrow and struggling with alcohol abuse, Tokiko drifts into a series of casual sexual encounters, leaving Haruka torn between her feelings of passion and devotion for her mentor and the emotional abuse she has been forced to endure.

Produced as part of Nikkatsu’s Roman Porno Reboot series, White Lily is directed by Hideo Nakata, the master behind such J-horror classics as Ringu and Dark Water.

This label is focused on the country’s original cinematic boom years – spanning the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s – occasionally venturing past that period (and the country’s borders) to highlight the films of Canada’s most inspired actors and filmmakers. Vinegar Syndrome’s sister company, OCN Distribution, is thrilled to be representing CIP’s brand new line of home video releases!

The kids your mother never let you play with.

Charismatic painter Steve (Scanners star Stephen Lack) has carved out a reputation as Montréal’s premiere drug connection, trafficking narcotics with a crew of friends and lovers living as a makeshift “family” on the fringes of society. But tensions rise when the police catch wind of their latest shipment, and Steve strikes up a friendship with a university student eager to observe the group’s illicit lifestyle for his graduate thesis. As the walls start to close in, old jealousies and new paranoias surface, and the family scrambles to adapt or perish.

Featuring seven songs by acclaimed Leonard Cohen collaborator Lewis Furey, the directorial debut of Allan Moyle (Times Square, Pump Up the Volume, Empire Records) is an innovative drug drama that set the stage for Drugstore Cowboy and other celebrated portraits of addiction. Equal parts Warhol and Cassavetes, the film’s docu-fiction approach earned widespread praise for its urgency and vivid reality, with The Toronto International Film Festival citing it as “one of the best films of the ’70s.” Out of official circulation for decades, The Rubber Gun returns in a stunning new restoration from the original camera negatives.

A woman living in quiet Yanjiao, separated from Beijing by the White River and observing strict quarantine rules, has a simple daily routine consisting of nothing but cooking and cleaning. The mundanity, however, gives way to an erotic entanglement when she begins to sleep with a waiter from the neighborhood, under the watchful eye of her husband.

From first-time female director Ma Xue, White River tests the viewers perceptions around voyeurism and female sensuality to surrealistic effect in this playfully mounted erotic drama.

While producing a string of films for notorious Spanish director Jess Franco (Barbed Wire Dolls, Jack the Ripper), Swiss producer Erwin C. Dietrich “borrowed” Franco’s main muse, actress Lina Romay, for a sexploitation romp of his own. Their resulting collaboration was 1975’s Rolls Royce Baby, a salacious and intensely erotic cinematic experience featuring the beautiful Romay at her most sexually uninhibited.

Romay stars as Lisa, a curvy nymphomaniac who prowls the countryside in her classic, chauffeur-driven, Rolls-Royce picking up any man she can find and engaging in all manner of explicit sexual acts. Dietrich (along with Franco himself who, according to the director, co-directed the movie, uncredited) forgoes any narrative contrivances and simply focuses on Lina’s outstanding natural physical attributes, picturesque scenery and a cavalcade of hot couplings that happen in and out of that glorious Rolls Royce, while composer Walter Baumgartner’s delirious score pumps away in the background.
