Without question, my favorite release of May was the SteelBook for the first season of HBO’s It: Welcome to Derry, featuring Bill Skarsgård’s Pennywise holding a red balloon with the kids he’s terrorizing reflected in it. It’s an iconic image for a SteelBook, and as a lifelong Stephen King and Pennywise fan, it doesn’t get any better than that. Had it not been released this month, the Fight Club SteelBook would have taken the top spot. The simplicity of a pink bar of soap emblazoned with the title is a clever idea, and anytime studios get creative with their physical media releases, I’m here for it. The Bride and The Da Vinci Code had some noteworthy SteelBook designs as well.

On the lazier side was Arrow Video, which recycled artwork from previous releases for Walmart-exclusive SteelBooks of The Warriors and Conan the Barbarian — the latter earning the distinction of worst artwork of the month. That kind of laziness is usually reserved for Shout Factory, who actually put out an amazing 4K SteelBook of Alligator this month. I’m also thrilled that Kino Lorber continues to release comedies on 4K, as they’re one of the only boutique labels doing so. We deserve The Great Outdoors and Harry and the Hendersons in the format, and I’m excited to see Shout Factory entering that space as well with Bowfinger next month.

Speaking of next month, there are several June titles I’m looking forward to. At the top of the list is the Steven Spielberg SteelBook Box Set, collecting eight of his most famous films. I love these director-specific box sets spanning multiple studios — and the concept has me curious about who they might spotlight next. Other highlights include The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Scream 7, both getting 4K SteelBooks. I’ll be double-dipping on Mario, since I also want the Yoshi egg tin from Walmart. I’ve long been calling for a 4K release of What Dreams May Come, so I’m thrilled Shout Factory is making it happen. And Arrow Video’s box set collecting the ’90s Mortal Kombat films rounds out what should be a strong month.
