Finding his family harassed by flunkies for the local crime lord, Mr. Big, Jack turns to the legendary neighborhood hero of his youth, John Slade, for help in avenging his brother. It’s going to take more than one local hero to get the neighborhood cleaned up, but luckily Slade’s old ass-kicking pals Hammer, Slammer, Flyguy, and Kung Fu Joe are all eager to help. Environmental Protection Agency officer Steve Malone (Terry Kinney, The Firm) travels to a US Army base in rural Alabama to investigate potentially toxic materials which have been causing curious symptoms amongst soldiers. His family — teenage daughter Marti (Gabrielle Anwar, Scent of a Woman), young son Andy (Reilly Murphy, Dangerous Game), and wife Carol (Meg Tilly, Psycho II) — go along for the ride and begin interacting with, and being threatened by, locals who are visibly unwell. In Boston, a young female teacher’s aide is found decapitated in a playground, her head discarded in a nearby bucket. Bearing striking similarities to a murder that took place the week before, Harvard-educated Lieutenant Judd Austin is brought onto the case, who quickly establishes that the latest victim had been enrolled in evening classes at Wendell College, a local girls’ school. 1962. Nine-year-old Frankie Scarlatti enjoys a homespun childhood in a rustic Western New York town. Reeling from the recent death of his wife and two children in a car crash in England for which he was partly responsible, American architect Paul Carver is traveling to Morocco utterly dejected. Plagued with nightmares in which he relives the accident, amid what appear to be ominous premonitions, Carver is befriended on his flight by German archaeologist Otto Gunther, who invites him to a party that evening. While perusing Gunther’s home, Carver encounters a striking but strangely ethereal Moroccan woman named Marisa, who leads him to a remote, opulent palace. When, driving to their archaeological site the next morning, Gunther and his young assistant Chantal find Carver unconscious in the desert, they reject the tale he recounts as being a figment of his alcohol-addled imagination, claiming not to know of any such woman. But Gunther, well-versed in the region’s ancient folklore, begins to fear that the forces of darkness may have their sights set on his new friend and that his very soul is at stake.

A true outlier in the annals of 1960s British horror, THE HAND OF NIGHT (also released as Beast of Morocco) is a bewitching and highly singular take on the vampire mythos, trumping its Hammer peers by taking the — for the period — unusual step of filming largely on location in Morocco, lending the film a much greater sense of atmosphere and scope than many of its contemporaries. The Reviver sub-label releases lost films and missing movies found within the Vinegar Syndrome Film Archive. Each release is a “mystery box” of archival curios scanned from their best-surviving film elements and programmed by VS archivist & vault manager Oscar Becher. Although a relative newcomer to the world of film restoration and distribution, Vinegar Syndrome has amassed one of the most extensive collections of archival film materials in the United States. While our decade-plus existence is short when compared to other major archives and distribution entities, our efforts to protect, release, and preserve unsung films from the world of independent cinema has only expanded over time. Although our focus has primarily been the distribution of feature films, we have amassed swaths of scintillating short films as well.

After their heyday in the silent era, many short films have since become lost due to their perceived lack of market value. While short films did not disappear, by the mid-twentieth century (the beginning of the Vinegar Syndrome scope) they had largely morphed into non-theatrically-distributed works from filmmakers and artists who endeavored to make films their way. Here, we’ve assembled some of our favorite lost shorts found within our archive that have been waiting patiently for their time to shine.

For Vinegar Syndrome’s first-ever shorts program, we selected from an eclectic mix of all subject matters imaginable, from lost projects from genre film legends to oddities which could never be released until now! We’re happy to present at long last this cultivated cabinet of curiosities containing the weirdest and wildest short films from within the Vinegar Syndrome Film Archive. All have been archivally scanned from their best-surviving (and in many cases, only) elements, with each film presented here on disc for the very first time.

The profits from each REVIVER release go directly to help fund the operations and upkeep of the Vinegar Syndrome Film Archive. Taking its name from the Lumière Brothers invention of the same name, Cinématographe is a new sub-label from Vinegar Syndrome that seeks to fill gaps in the canon of American cinema. Offering a mix of auteur driven studio films produced during the New Hollywood era of the late 1960s and 70s all the way through the indie boom of the 1980s and 90s, Cinématographe will explore the wide breadth of American moviemaking, spanning numerous genres and scales of production. Curated and produced by Vinegar Syndrome’s Justin LaLiberty, each limited edition release will be housed in a specially designed, cloth-bound, media book with embossed foil titles and custom molded disc trays accompanied by a slipcase featuring newly commissioned art and an individually numbered J-card.

New York City, 1979: working class Jersey City teenager Shane (Ryan Phillippe, Cruel Intentions) becomes infatuated with Studio 54, a lavish Manhattan nightclub known for decadence. Shane’s time at 54 introduces him to a cast of characters including real life nightclub owner Steve Rubell (Mike Myers, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery), busboy Greg (Breckin Meyer, Clueless), coat checker Anita (Salma Hayek, Traffic), and actress Julie (Neve Campbell, Scream).

Written and directed by Mark Christopher, 54 was originally heavily re-shot ahead of its theatrical release in 1998 before being re-assembled in a long awaited director’s cut in 2015, with over forty minutes of different footage used. Anchored by an impressive, star-making, performance from Ryan Phillippe along with a bombastic, period appropriate soundtrack, 54 is an essential ode to old New York that’s ripe for re-discovery. Cinématographe is proud to present the definitive release of 54, including a new 4K restoration of the 1998 theatrical version as well as the 2015 director’s cut, offering an exemplary case study in how drastically different a film can be between two different edits.

Few filmmakers epitomize the aesthetics of vintage Times Square cinema better than Michael Findlay. Often collaborating with his wife Roberta who served as cinematographer and occasional actor alongside him, the couple created sick and sordid classics which still retain their power to shock. Released at the end of their ’60s streak of unforgettable roughies which included the notorious Flesh Trilogy, this set of sleaze classics have been newly restored in 4K from their original camera negatives by Distribpix + Something Weird, replete with in-depth extras including a fresh conversation with Roberta Findlay herself!

Michael Findlay plays Richard Davis in A THOUSAND PLEASURES, where, fresh from murdering his wife, he gets caught disposing of her corpse and is promptly abducted to a remote seaside house by a group of man-hating lesbians. Forced into becoming their slave, Richard is soon subjected to all manner of depravity and torture, the likes of which he never even imagined.

Uta Erickson winds up in rural Vermont looking for sexual kicks in THE ULTIMATE DEGENERATE, as she comes under the control of Michael Findlay playing a ruthless, insatiable sadist. With the help of his servant Bruno, he keeps a pack of women around the house acting out exceedingly stranger, more lurid kinks. This sexual trap seems to offer no release, but what does the degenerate really desire?

A water dispute compels the colourful renters of a tenement building to resist the abusive landlady looming over their heads. Director Chor Yuen (Intimate Confessions of a Chinese Courtesan; The Magic Blade), tasked with remaking a 1963 film adapted from a Shanghainese play, insisted on staging his own version in Cantonese, convinced it would best connect with his audience. His instinct was right: this comedic Hong Kong miniature, featuring a cast of beloved TVB actors, became the highest-grossing film of 1973, outpacing even Bruce Lee’s Enter The Dragon, with a tale of community building and everyday solidarity. Jesus (kind of) saves in this “true story” about drugs and salvation from Irvin S. Yeaworth, a maker of 16mm religious shorts who would later direct THE BLOB.

An unclassifiable animated odyssey from the director of Heavy Metal.

A group of monkeys, including a director loosely inspired by Dennis Hopper’s Easy Rider persona, struggle through various trials and tribulations while making an epic adventure film in this psychedelic and satirical look at the Hollywood counterculture of the early ’70s. Directed by celebrated animator Gerald Potterton – who earned multiple Oscar nominations for his work at the National Film Board of Canada, contributed to Yellow Submarine, and later directed Heavy Metal – this is an outrageous and inspired feat of cinematic imagination.

An unlikely hybrid of analogue animation and live action Soviet fantasy film, Tiki Tiki repurposes extended passages from Rolan Bykov’s eye-popping 1967 phantasmagoria Aybolit-66 as the film within the film, employing irreverent comic dubbing and cutting to subvert the original intent. The result puzzled and thrilled ’70s audiences in equal measure and turned heads by winning Mosfilm art director Aleksandr Kuznetsov a Canadian Film Award. An unapologetically eccentric experience that has earned comparisons to H.C. Potter’s Hellzapoppin’, Tiki Tiki remains one of the most sought-after animated enigmas of its era.

After the ship transporting him is caught in a storm and capsizes, Arthur, a convict, washes up on a secluded tropical beach. Believing himself alone, his solitude is quickly betrayed when he discovers that there are six other survivors from the wreck; all beautiful women. While initially fearful for their safety, the women soon let down their guard as their need for a man overcomes them. As both Arthur and his new found friends realize not only their physical but emotional bond, the group make the best of being stranded while realizing sympathy and compassion for Arthur’s plight.

Best known by some for his notorious horror film Last House on Dead End Street, Roger Watkins was most prolific as a director of hardcore theatrical features. Working primarily with New York’s Ace Booking Company, he created moody, intense erotic classics, three of which are collected here by Peekarama, and all restored from their completely uncensored original 35mm camera negatives.

Watkins’ hardcore debut, HER NAME WAS LISA (1979), opens with the friends and adversaries of recently deceased call girl Lisa gathered at her funeral. As each attendee recalls their connection to her, an increasingly sinister portrait of her sordid downfall and death begins to emerge. Starring Samantha Fox (Roommates), Bobby Astyr (Foxtrot), and Vanessa Del Rio (Babylon Pink).

In THE PINK LADIES (1979), a group of sex starved Staten Island couples indulge in their own elaborate fantasies, in this outlandish and stylish comedy with an surreal edge, which features Robyn Byrd (Hot Honey), Kandi Barbour (Neon Nights), Christine DeShaffer (Hot & Saucy Pizza Girls) and many others.
