June brought plenty to be excited about when it comes to physical media. The much-anticipated (and often sold-out) SteelBook release of last year’s Best Picture Oscar winner, “One Battle After Another,” finally arrived. Walmart surprised with some excellent new slipcover releases, including neon road sign versions of some of our favorites, like “Jaws” and the “It” collection. Shout Factory finally put out “What Dreams May Come” on 4K UHD, a release I’ve personally been waiting for. Plus, Arrow Video put out a 4K UHD box set of the ’90s classics “Mortal Kombat” and “Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.”
But one release in June stood above them all: the Steven Spielberg: The Spotlight Collection 4K UHD SteelBook Box Set, featuring 8 films, including “Jurassic Park,” “Schindler’s List,” and “Saving Private Ryan.” Why is this so exciting for collectors? Because it brings together film releases that span different studios, all encased in the same box set — meaning the studios signed off on putting those films together. Universal, Sony, and Paramount all had releases that were part of the set. It’s a dream to see this sort of physical media release come together. Most of us already own all these films, but starting to see a director’s body of work assembled like this is something I hope we see more of.
Other honorable mentions include the amazing artwork on the front of the international release of “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: Season One,” coming from Zavvi as a SteelBook and featuring the likeness of the knight’s shield artwork. The incredible cover art on “Bubba Ho-Tep” and “Slither” almost made up for some of Shout Factory’s lesser efforts as of late. It was also interesting to see Kino Lorber put out a brand-new release of “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” since they’ve been more focused on restoring and re-releasing older titles lately. Kino also put out the Damon Wayans comedy classic “Major Payne,” but only on Blu-ray. One title I thought deserved much better cover artwork was “To Kill a Mockingbird,” from Universal.
Next month, the Barnes & Noble 50% off Criterion sale continues, so I plan to dive deeper into that boutique label. “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore” will help complete my Martin Scorsese collection, and as a fan of Mike Mills, I’m looking forward to his box set of “Beginners,” “20th Century Women,” and “C’mon C’mon.” Having missed “Michael” and “The Devil Wears Prada 2” in theaters, I’m looking forward to finally catching those. And the Lionsgate Limited Exclusive 4K UHD Box Set of Quentin Tarantino’s “Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair” will be a highlight. I think collectively we’re all anticipating the “Stranger Things” complete series box set coming from Arrow Video — something we never thought we’d see.
