Secondly, Peter Cheyney’s Lemmy Caution (John van Dreelan, 13 Ghosts) becomes entangled with a femme fatale as he tackles a jewel robbery. The final segment focuses on Georges Simenon’s Inspector Maigret, as Michel Simon (L’Atalante) solves a murder from his sickbed with the aid of an altar boy.

Lawyer Nicole (Zabou Breitman, La Crise) is driven by frustration and male hypocrisy in both her personal and professional lives to leave her law firm and her hometown, and to reinvent herself as a man.

Arriving in Paris, Nicole makes friends, and soon those friends turn to lovers, and lovers turn to enemies. She suffocates in the identities she creates and lets rejection make a villain of her, until insecurities turn to tragedy and she has nowhere to turn.

Centring on female psychosexuality, without demonisation, the film presents challenging gender dynamics and trans imagery at a time when neither was common within mainstream cinema. It also utilises genre tropes to complex ends, never losing sight that it is, first and foremost, a character study with much to say about the plight of women in contemporary France in the late 1980s.

For almost a century, Leni Riefenstahl’s Triumph of the Will (Triumph des Willens) has reigned as the most controversial documentary ever made, a “cinema masterpiece,” according to film historian Amos Vogel, “a huge and disturbing film spectacle.” Capturing the pageantry of the 1934 Nuremberg congress, Triumph of the Will is a sensory tableau that celebrates the nation’s resurgence in the aftermath of a crushing economic depression. Riefenstahl commanded a squad of photographers and oversaw the editing of the film, crafting a landmark of documentary cinema, even as it permanently stained the reputation of the filmmaker. Riefenstahl spent a lifetime trying to disassociate herself from the Nazi leadership, but her complicity with Hitler is now uniquivocal, and no matter how artistically rendered, Triumph of the Will was used to fertilize the rise of the Third Reich. This Kino Classics release is part of an ambitious reevaluation of the filmmaker’s career, including the release of Andres Veiel’s award-winning documentary Riefenstahl, new restorations of her films (The Blue Light, Tiefland) and special editions of previously unreleased work (Longing for Innocence, Under Water Impressions). Independently produced in 1948 under the aegis of the U.S. Navy Club, WILL IT HAPPEN AGAIN? (The Love Life of Adolph Hitler) is a carefully calculated and beautifully executed takedown of the Third Reich. Footage from Nazi propaganda films (including Leni Riefenstahl’s Triumph of the Will) is counteracted with images from Nuremberg trials and the liberated death camps, puncturing the myth of the Aryan Herrenmensch, revealiing the NSDAP leadership to have been little more than the typical autocrats, drunk on power, frolicking in banal luxury, and enjoying their brief moment of invincibility. Notorious exploitation producer Dwain Esper (Narcotic, Maniac) acquired the film in 1972 and reshaped the judicious anti-fascist treatise into a frothing attack on all 20th-century despots, including Joseph Stalin. In addition to more bombastic narration, CONFORM OR DIE (aka Hitler’s Strange Love Life) is ladled with unhealthy amounts of shocking footage (e.g. the mutilated corpse of Benito Mussolini) to hammer home its anti-authoritarian message. Viewer discretion is most definitely advised. This Kino Classics edition was mastered in 2K and 4K from the original 35mm negatives and several 35mm prints, compiling the most complete versions of these controversial but undeniably powerful anti-Nazi propaganda films.
