Quality of the movie or packaging aside, the hands down physical media release of the month is the 4K Steelbook for “Barbarian.” A film that came out in 2022, there has been no physical release of the film for four years. Many people questioned the director Zach Cregger, prior to his work on the popular “Weapons,” if we’d ever see a release from Walt Disney, and he had said it wasn’t for a lack of trying. James Cameron and Steven Spielberg level directors were getting their films owned by the studio released on 4K, but “Barbarian” was essentially buried. Yet, here we are, where the film is finally available to own in physical release, and that is a win for everyone.
Apart from “Barbarian,” my favorite release of the month is the 4K Steelbook of Tim Burton’s “Mars Attacks,” a film that had not yet made its 4K debut. The much delayed Kino Lorber release “Daylight” finally hits shelves, and in perfect timing to coincide with “The Odyssey,” Arrow Video’s release of “Troy” was put out. Other notable Steelbooks include “Star Wars: The Mandaloran and Grogu” with some gorgeous artwork, “Backrooms,” coming from the A24 Shop, and the original “Practical Magic” in a 4K Steelbook to coincide with the release of the sequel. And never to be forgotten, Lionsgate Limited continues doing what I absolutely love, which is take lesser known releases, like “The Descent: Part II” and giving it an impressive Steelbook release which gets collectors excited about a title that might otherwise be lost to the dustbin of history.
Next month, we get the debut of a new sub-label from Arrow Video called Toy Robot. A few of the first releaes aren’t for me, but I will be picking up the Dolph Lundgren “Masters Of The Universe,” so I’m excited to see what this new label has to offer. We’ve got some great Steelbook artwork coming for two past releases in “Annihilation” and “Arrival,” and my most anticipated release of the month is Pixar’s “Toy Story 5,” which also has beautiful art on the cover. It will go perfect with the Disney/Pixar wall that I just installed in my home. And we finally get the 4K Steelbook release of “28 Days Later.”
