High schooler Cru Jones is the fastest and most talented BMX rider in his small logging town. When Duke Best, owner of the Mongoose bicycle company, decides to hold a competition at a nearly impossible-to-complete BMX course named Helltrack, Cru decides it’s his destiny to compete in the race, which offers a $100,000 cash prize. But unknown to Cru, Duke only concocted the race as a publicity stunt to promote his own top rider, Bart Taylor, and plans to do everything in his power to keep the unsponsored Cru from entering. To make matters even more complicated, Cru soon learns that the race is scheduled the same day he’s supposed to take the SATs and finds himself with a choice between his future in college and a race where all the odds are stacked against him…

After receiving a mysterious invitation from his Aunt Marta, whom he hasn’t seen in thirty years, Richard Hamilton is on his way to his estranged relative’s countryside home with his wife and two children in tow. Named for its longest story, BLOOD REINCARNATION spans the worlds of ghosts, murder, vengeance, and the dogged fury of deeds left undone—even from beyond the grave. 1. THE TREASURE. When a man, his godmother, and his pregnant wife believe they’ve unearthed buried treasure, greed overcomes them, and in the ensuing quarrel, the godmother is killed. But when the wife is in labor and facing a difficult birth, could it be the work of the godmother’s vengeful spirit?

2. THE WANTON. A married woman and her lover, eager to continue their affair unimpeded, lock her husband inside a wooden crate and dump it into the sea for him to drown. Before long, strange events all having to do with water start to impact the couple, as it seems the husband’s ghost seeks retribution for his own aqueous agony.

3. LIU TIANSU. Esteemed doctor and healer Liu Tiansu is summoned by a mercenary to the county magistrate’s compound. There, he’s ordered to save the life of the magistrate’s ailing fourth mistress. When Liu is double-crossed and the mistress dies, he’s sentenced to death at once. The mercenary takes pity upon the innocent doctor, and although he must behead him, he teaches him the blood reincarnation technique. Following his advice, Liu Tiansu returns as a ghost of himself, with only a short period of time to sort things out…

John is just an average man working as a sound technician for a New York City news station, until one day his pregnant wife is brutally murdered while witnessing the kidnapping of a young woman in broad daylight. As the 70s progressed and the poliziottesco field grew more crowded, some directors sought new frontiers and different spaces, growing the genre into unusual locales and sometimes even shooting films abroad. In this second volume, we bring you a trio of Italian crime rarities which made creative use of atypical settings.

BLUE NUDE
Rocco has come to New York City from Italy, confident that as long as he hangs in there, he’ll one day make it in showbiz. In between wandering Times Square dazzled by its glitzy signage, a friend ropes him into acting in a hardcore film where he encounters Lilly, an established female porn actor. Barely scraping by, he finds himself taken advantage of by managers, young women, and crooked cops, all eager for a wide-eyed immigrant to abuse or extort. He hopes for a future with Lilly, but when harsh violence enters into Rocco’s life, nothing can stop him from lashing out in this sordid world in which he’s ended up. A one-of-a-kind document of late 70s street level Manhattan (and actual period sex film sets) from writer/director Luigi Scattini (Witchcraft 70), it stars Gerardo Amato (Sweets for a Stranger) as Rocco, Susan McBain (Barbara Broadcast), Renato Romano (The Bird with the Crystal Plumage), Robert Kerman (Debbie Does Dallas), and director/actor Carter Stevens (The Passions of Carol).

NO ALLA VIOLENZA (NO TO VIOLENCE aka DEATH HUNT)
In the picturesque Sicilian port city of Messina, Inspector Ettore Manetti (Al Cliver) is beginning to crumble. Violent crime is rampant, bikers have just beaten and killed a police officer, and now he’s now been handed the job of catching three dangerous prison escapees. As the trio begins a series of kidnappings, they run down a little girl while narrowly evading capture. Tano, the girl’s father, begins his own vigilante crusade as he ferociously strikes down anyone in his path in search of the men responsible. Exceedingly, violence is no longer limited to just the criminals. Ostensibly a passion project from prolific Messina-born actor Tano Cimarosa (Reflections in Black), who’s credited with writing, directing, and playing the vigilante role, this regional film liberally showcases both scenic locations and shocking brutality. Also starring Paola Quattrini (The Case of the Bloody Iris), Ninetto Davoli (The Decameron), and Federico Boido (I Am Sartana, Your Angel of Death).

POLIZIA SELVAGGIA (SAVAGE POLICE) aka CANI (MURDERER)
Ahmet toils away in Istanbul’s lowest rung of petty crime, berated even by other thieves who call him the Leech. Stalking the streets for any potential score, he snatches a man’s briefcase and steals his car, accidentally killing a detective in the process. When a manhunt ensues, Ahmet strains to flee the country, emboldened by the fact that the briefcase was packed with cash. Murat (Turkish star Tarık Akan), partner of the dead detective, sets out on his own path of vengeance while Ahmet’s cruel desperation forces him into taking hostages in order to evade the police. This ambitious Turkish-Italian co-production written and directed by Guido Zurli (Black Deep Throat) heaps on psychotic sleaze and a truly vicious, depraved antagonist in Ahmet. Megs (Robert De Niro, The Deer Hunter) and Dave (Ed Harris, The Right Stuff) are two Vietnam veterans coping with their own mental-health issues post-war. When it becomes clear that Dave is struggling with alcoholism, Megs attempts to help him come to terms with his past as a soldier while, at the same time, falling in love with Dave’s sister, Martha (Kathy Baker, The Right Stuff). While Dave is at odds with the love shared between Megs and Martha, he comes to realize that they all need each other.

Adapted for the screen by Stephen Metcalfe, from his own play Strange Snow, Jacknife marks the first American feature film for noted British director David Jones (84 Charing Cross Road). Shot almost entirely on location in Connecticut by British cinematographer Brian West (84 Charing Cross Road, Wake in Fright) and featuring a trio of exemplary performances from its three lead actors, including Ed Harris’s Golden Globe®-nominated turn, Jacknife is a long-overlooked entry in post-Vietnam war cinema of the 1980s. Generally speaking, the entire story of a lost film always remains unfinished, forever absent from the grand history of cinema. Luck undoubtedly factors into the success of any film which has gone on to become a hit, but what about one that just never found its way at all?

After a few successful decades of working in film and television, art and set designer 444444444444 (444444444444444444444, 444444444444444444444) decided to take his shot at directing. With his accumulated skills including painting, sculpting, and graphic design, 4444444 — then in his late fifties — wrote his first (and only) feature-length script, entitled 44444.

After casting the film from mostly local non-professional actors, 4444444 hired crew members entirely out of pocket to produce the film, which centered around 44444, a woman on the run from her past who consistently remains the object of men’s desires. The film found its lead in 44444444444444 (44444444444444, 44444444444444444), a former 4444444 model turned actor.

Fiercely independent and unflinchingly committed to its vision, 444444444444 spent seven weeks in 44444444 shooting this dreamy picture during the brisk autumn of 1977. Made on a budget of $200,000 (the modern equivalent of about a million dollars), 44444 never received any wide release, despite 4444444’s tireless efforts to find a distributor who wouldn’t alter his vision for the film. Reviver is proud to present this bravely auteur-driven work, exactly as its filmmaker would have wished for it to be seen, scanned from its long-lost original camera negative for the first time ever.

The profits from each Reviver release go directly to help fund the operations and upkeep of the Vinegar Syndrome Film Archive. Frustrated by what she was hearing on commercial radio, Sue Carpenter built a 40-watt FM station in 1995 and ran it out of her apartment in Los Angeles, exploiting a legal case that allowed hundreds of low-power illegal radio operators to proliferate throughout the country and gave birth to the legal LPFM movement. Carpenter was 28 years old, a secretary and an aspiring journalist when she first set up KBLT and invited strangers into her house to spin whatever the hell they wanted. It soon took on a life of its own, drawing Mazzy Star to headline a benefit concert and the Red Hot Chili Peppers to play live in her living room.

“A far-reaching meditation on the relationship between individual and society” (Film Comment), LE JOLI MAI is a portrait of Paris and Parisians shot during May 1962. It is a film with several thousand actors, including a poet, a student, an owl, a housewife, a stockbroker, a competitive dancer, two lovers, General de Gaulle, and several cats. Filmed just after the March ceasefire between France and Algeria, LE JOLI MAI documents Paris during a turning point in French history: the first time since 1939 that France was not involved in any war.

Part I, “A Prayer from the Eiffel Tower,” documents personal attitudes and feelings around Paris. A salesman feels free only when he is driving his car, and then only if there is not too much traffic. A working-class mother of eight has just gotten the larger apartment that she had been wanting for years. The space capsule of American astronaut John Glenn is examined by a group of admiring children. Two investors talk about their careers and adventures. A couple in love since their teens discuss the possibility of eternal happiness. At a middle class wedding banquet, the guests are raucous while the bride is quiet, dignified and reserved.

Part II, “The Return of Fantomas,” is an investigation of the political and social life of the city. Marker and Lhomme alternate between public events and private discussions: the former focusing on the Algerian situation, such as a funeral for people killed in Paris street demonstrations after the Algerian settlement. Meanwhile, the latter includes a conversation with two girls about the state of France; a meeting with a pair of engineers who describe the potential of the current technological revolution; an African student who discusses his own response to the French and the Parisians’ reaction to his skin color; a worker-priest forced to choose between the Church and his fellow workers; and an Algerian worker describing conflict he has experienced with native Frenchmen. The film ends with sweeping views of Paris, the facades of its prisons, and the faces of its people as they struggle to make sense of their moment in history.

A big city student arrives at a farm and falls in love with the farmer’s 17-year-old daughter. They have to deal with disapproving parents, as well as the local priest, who thinks the youth of today is rotten. This 1951 film unknowingly helped establish the reputation of Sweden as the land of sin, just because of a short, innocent skinny dip, fanning the image of Sweden as a sexually permissive country, and eventually spawning a wave of “Swedish Sin” films exported all over the world. The film remains to this day one of Sweden’s biggest international box office successes of all time. It was awarded the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival, and won the award for Best Music at the Cannes Film Festival.

In Possessed by Evil (1996), Denny and his girlfriend Charlotte are blood drinking satanists intent on harnessing evil powers through black magic rituals. After Mike and his friends commit a gang rape at a party, Charlotte is murdered by a pair of vengeful thugs. Denny then performs a ritual to bring Charlotte back from the dead; however, she returns as a vampire and promptly turns Denny and his friends into a trio of marauding bloodsuckers. Scarcely distributed outside of mail order avenues, Possessed by Evil is an unwonted mashup of the rape / revenge and vampire sub-genres, replete with gooey vampire meltdowns and envelope-pushing sexuality.

In Dying to Meet You (1997), Ted is a ruthless serial killer. After assaulting and murdering his psychologist, he embarks on a relentless reign of terror throughout the Twin Cities. Leah is also a local serial killer. Haunted by her childhood abuse, she sexually mutilates men after luring them into her wanton web. When Ted meets Leah on the beach, they quickly discover their shared affinity for homicide. Can two psychopaths discover love in the midst of jealousy, castration, and extreme scissor eyeball gouging? Originally released on home video as Serial Killer Massacre and featuring notorious ‘90s scream queen Stephanie Beaton (The Evilmaker, Eyes of the Werewolf), Dying to Meet You finally makes its long-awaited Blu-Ray debut from Saturn’s Core.

Kevin Coon took inspiration from the movies he loved like The Blob and Creepshow and crafted these highly enjoyable and off the wall low-budget anthology films: Experiment of Death, Macabre Tales, and Tales of the Damned. All three movies were made in the 90s for under $16,000 in total, but they ooze with endless creativity and ambition. We are so happy to bring these Montana-lensed oddities to an audience for the first time since their extremely rare self-released VHS.

Tatsumi, an unassuming fisherman, makes his real livelihood by cleaning up dead bodies for local yakuza gangs. When criminal intrigue leads to the vicious murder of his ex-girlfriend by one of the gangsters, it thrusts her hot-headed teenage sister Aoi (a tour de force by ingénue Kokoro Morita) onto an unbridled path of vengeance. With his own personal motives in tow, Tatsumi vows to mentor and protect Aoi to the bitter end of her blood-soaked crusade.

Gritty, mean and intense from the get-go, Tatsumi recalls the explosive “true document” yakuza films of celebrated director Kinji Fukasaku while adding a fresh perspective to its violent proceedings. Director Hiroshi Shoji flexes his auteur chops with stylish panache that never belies the genre’s misanthropic DNA. His naturalistic direction and the cast’s breathtaking performances render Tatsumi a “tense, brutally realistic and an overall great film” (Asian Movie Pulse).

Leading attorney Shigemori takes on the defence of murder-robbery suspect Misumi who served jail time for another murder 30 years ago. Shigemori’s chances of winning the case seem low—his client freely admits his guilt, despite facing the death penalty if he is convicted. As he digs deeper into the case, and he hears the testimonies of the victim’s family and Misumi himself, the once confident Shigemori begins to doubt whether his client is the murderer after all.

DISTRIBPIX, one of the legendary names in the genre (and whose extensive library will be the backbone of this line), will offer single, double, and even triple feature Blu-rays highlighting works from every corner and crevice of softcore smut, from the dawn of nudie cuties to the all-but-hard 70s, with plentiful lost and never on disc films along the way.

The transitional era of the early 1970s was a trying time for the makers of softcore features, as hardcore slowly overtook the decade-long demand for every flavor of sexploitation. Although soft-X material did remain moderately bankable, many of these efforts appeared overly tame for their day and vanished as quickly as they were produced, all too often becoming forgotten, abandoned, or otherwise lost to time. Presented here are three very distinct, striking examples of long-believed lost sexploitation cinema, all produced in New York in the early ’70s, and at last resurrected and restored in 4K for their home video debuts.

In SIDEWALK COWBOY (1970), a wayward young man enters a spiral of sexual confusion and misfortune as he’s abused, debased, molested, and taken advantage of by man and woman alike in this bent riff on Midnight Cowboy. Directed by the great producer Robert Sumner (Take Off, The Nesting), it makes great use of many of the lyrical streetscapes of Manhattan, as well as the prolific Linda Boyce (The Curse of her Flesh).

A square middle-aged couple accidentally discover Screw Magazine in FUN AND GAMES (1972), which takes them on an outrageous journey of sexual liberation through all manner of freaks and hustlers (and one very angry cop) in New York’s free love scene. Helmed by acclaimed Broadway writer/director Mervyn Nelson and featuring Casey Donovan (as Cal Culver) in an early role, this sprawling underground comedy was initially distributed by Radley Metzger!

Driven mad from a brutal assault during her college years, a young woman and her simpering, bloodthirsty admirer embark on a sex-fueled murder spree in 1974’s absolutely bonkers HAPPILY EVER EVER! Starring Mary Mendum (The Image) in one of her most impressive performances, strikingly photographed by João Fernandes (Invasion U.S.A.), and written & directed by Ron Wertheim (Through the Looking Glass), this genuinely unnerving and often disturbing genre treasure is long overdue for cult classic status.
