More of a Golden Globes nominee than Academy Awards, the only categories I could see even the slightest potential is Best Original Song, with the “anything goes” mentality that lives in the that current category, and Best Visual Effects, as CGI-ing a stuffed bear as believable as in “Ted” is award-worthy in my book. There are three potential ways this film could break through the comedy barrier: the first, “Bridesmaids” officially opened the gate for comedies to have a fighting chance on Oscar night, secondly, the box office success/surprise of this film could easily translate into a wider attention placed on the film, and finally, Seth MacFarlane is the host of the show this year, and could easily garner some votes just for that. Anything can happen on Oscar night.
