KON-TIKI

One of the strongest and most elaborate Foreign Languages I can ever remember, I cannot believe “Kon-Tiki” is not being talked about more. If “Amour” hadn’t acquired 4 nominations including Best Foreign Language Film, Best Directing, Best Screenplay, and Best Picture, I would have to argue that “Kon-Tiki” could rival it. Being Norway’s highest grossing film this year and becoming the first Norwegian film to get nominated for both an Academy Award and Golden Globe, this film will probably not reach the Academy Award winning heights of the 1950’s documentary it is based on, but it will go in the history books as being one of my favorite foreign films in recent memory, proving 2012 as great year for foreign films thus far.

REVIEW

A masterfully crafted adventure film, “Kon-Tiki” elaborates off the true story and Academy Award winning documentary about a man bent on proving his theory that in pre-Columbian time, South Americans could have sailed the Pacific to Polynesia on wooden rafts and settled there. A highly unpopular theory and what most people thought would be a death sentenced equates to a highly entertaining and effective expedition. With impressive visuals and graphics throughout the entire film, including sharks and whales that rival that of “Life Of PI”, and a completely convincing and powerful performance from Pål Sverre Valheim Hagen as Thor Heyerdahl, “Kon-Tiki” is not only Norway’s most expensive film ever, it is also Norway’s highest grossing film of 2012, and easily one of my favorite foreign films of the year.
