When it comes to the Academy Awards, the way you can spot a true artist is that no matter what film it is that they worked on that year, that particular gets nominated, even if it is bringing the film that single nomination. The cinematography Roger Deakins is one of those artists, this year bringing “Prisoners” its one and only nomination. Deakins gets nominated every year, and although he has yet to win, the Academy loves him and recognizes his work. John Williams is another one of those men, bringing in his 49th Academy Award nomination with his work “The Book Thief”, another film that only has one nomination thanks to this man. Never count out Williams, as he’s won five times (“Fiddler On The Roof” (1971), “Jaws” (1975), “Star Wars” (1977), “E.T. The Extra Terrestrial” (1982), and “Schindler’s List” (1993)). With my bet on the top three in the Original Score category being “The Book Thief”, “Gravity”, and “Her”, it’s hard to tell what could walk away with the prize. “Gravity” could be the biggest choice, as it will be taking home a few awards throughout the night, but John Williams is a force to be reckoned with and contributing such a gorgeous and emotional score to the book adaptation could just put him as the front-runner.
