And with the final film viewed for this Oscar Season, I complete the challenge of 42 films in 46 days. Now to put out some predictions, which, for the second year in a row I am not completely confident in, as some of the categories feel way too close to call including the Best Picture, which all of us will be waiting for with bated breath come the end of the night. It’s always the same conflict between what I want to win and what I think will win based on trends. No matter what history will be made. I’m pulling for the most unlikely split ever between “12 Years A Slave” for Best Picture and Alfonso Cuaron for Best Directing, when really either director will likely win with their Best Picture, so Cuaron/”Gravity”, McQueen/”12 Years A Slave”, but with so many people predicting the same thing, I jumped on board. Either way, Cuaron will either become the first Hispanic director to win or McQueen will become the first African American director to win and both are amazing films. I am hoping that “12 Years A Slave” will be a lot more popular than people are predicting. If none of the actors or actresses win for “American Hustle”, that will make history for no wins coming from four nominations. I gave “American Hustle” the costume design win because I feel like with all of its support, it has to end up winning something. That love could fall into the Original Screenplay category, but I’m pulling for Spike Jonze and “Her” to pull off the win there.

In the smaller categories, I’m going for the feel good winners over the more emotional challenging films, like “The Great Beauty” in the foreign category, as it is much less emotionally deep then its nominees, remaining mostly surface level, while “The Lady in Number 6” for the Documentary Shorts is much more heartwarming and less heart wrenching than its fellow nominees. Although I personally though “That Wasn’t Me” was a much better produced live action short than its competition, I feel like “The Voorman Problem” having Martin Freeman and Tom Hollander will win it points for having recognizable faces in it.

In the end, I’m predicting seven wins for “Gravity”, mainly in the technical categories, and three wins for “12 Years A Slave” including Best Picture. If Steve McQueen or Chiwetel Ejiofor, this will mark a heavy leaning towards “12 Years A Slave” winning the main category but those are big ifs, with all the momentum in other people’s courts. All we can do now is watch and hope. Here we go:
