Coming in just under his previous Eva Green film Dark Shadows ($29.6 million), Tim Burton’s Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children nails the number one spot at $28.8 million. This appears to be Burton’s eighth best opening, with his biggest opening to date being his live action adaptation of Disney’s Alice In Wonderland at $116.1 million. It’s at least in the top four for Eva Green, with 300: Rise Of An Empire being her number one with a $45 million weekend. Peter Berg’s latest release, Deepwater Horizon, brings in number two at a not-even-close $20.2 million. That opening doesn’t even beat Battleship’s opening of $25.5 million, to which he also directed. The only other major release this weekend, Relativity’s Masterminds could not quite crack the top 5, coming in at number 6 with only $6.5 million, light years ahead of their dismal re-debut this year with The Disappointments Room, but still not a great showing with such an ensemble cast.
The biggest jump upwards this week was Disney’s Queen Of Katwe starring David Oyelowo and Lupita Nyong’o, which gained almost 1200 theaters. It jumped from number 22 to number 7, with a 15 spot increase. Also, Ghostbusters added a few screens and found its way back on the top 25 after an eight spot increase, despite being released on VOD this week and arriving on home video next week. Also enjoying an eight spot increase is the Kate Winslet led The Dressmaker, which was just outside of the top 25 last week, but lands with authority this week. The biggest drop was Disney’s Pete’s Dragon, which could easily fall off the list next week, along with Universal’s Jason Bourne, which barely clung on this week.
Bumped off the list this week were The Light Between Oceans, Hillsong: Let Hope Rise, which dropped all the way from 18 to 49, The Wild Life, War Dogs, Mechanic: Resurrection, Sausage Party, and Star Trek Beyond.
Next weekend, The Girl On The Train, starring Emily Blunt will aim for the number one spot over Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children. If its references to Gone Girl are any indication, it could find itself as high as $37.5 million. But do consider that Emily Blunt has never delivered in a film over $31.4 million in 2010’s The Wolfman, so an opening as high as that feels somewhat unlikely. However, it does have the reading crowd coming with it.
