FILM SYNOPSIS: After her husband is assassinated in Dallas in 1963, Jacqueline Kennedy strives to maintain a public show of strength while grieving in private and caring for their two young children. As she searches for the best way to ensure both her husband’s and her own legacies, Jackie navigates the treacherous waters of politics.
Who’s her competition? Once again, the biggest competition for “Jackie” in the Best Costume Design category is “La La Land,” which is original costumes being made for an original concept. But “Jackie” nails recreating some of Jackie Kennedy’s most famous attire and definitely nails the era, so for that, it rises above. So it all becomes subjective whether to award the unique, out-of-the-box concept or to award the era-appropriate, retelling of major historical events. In my personal opinion, the former is a little more impressive, as “La La Land” definitely went in a certain direction with its costume choice. Obviously if a historical accurate film does not nail its costumes, it will definitely be criticized, but there seems like some just the tiniest bit lesser in compiling preexisting costumes over something designed from someone else’s mind for that particular film.
