Box Office: June 15th, 2018 – Incredibles 2

Taking 14 years to make the sequel, “Incredibles 2” dominated the box office weekend, knocking out “Ocean’s 8” after just one week and breaking records to boot. The previous record holder for best animated opening weekend was two years ago with “Finding Dory” which opened to $135 million. “Incredibles 2” shattered that record, opening to $182.6 million. If it continues to follow suit with its domestic box office trajectory, it will become the highest grossing animated film of all-time, also looking to beat out “Finding Dory” at $486 million. “Ocean’s 8” gets bumped to No. 2, with $18.9 million, surpassing its $70 million production budget with a total two week haul of $78.5 million. Fellow newcomer “Tag” opened at No. 3 with $14.9 million, pushing “Solo: A Star Wars Story” and “Deadpool 2” to the bottom of the Top Five, with $10 million and $8.6 million respectively.

The remake of “Superfly” opened to No. 6 with $6.87 million, narrowly beating out the sophomore showing of “Hereditary,” which nabbed $6.85 million. “Avengers: Infinity War” falls to No. 8, with $5.4 million, bringing its cumulative domestic box office to $664.3 million. “Adrift” and “Book Club” round out the Top Ten. In smaller showings, despite the press that the John Travolta led “Gotti” was at zero percent on Rotten Tomatoes, the film still opened at No. 11, with $1.7 million while the foreign sequel “Race 3” opened at No. 12 with $1.6 million. After another week off the list, Disney’s “A Wrinkle In Time” jumps back on, going from No. 30 to No. 13 over the weekend and grabbing another $1.6 million, despite having already reached home video. “Hearts Beat Loud” plays bigger this weekend, due to its father-daughter aspect, reaching No. 24 after an opening weekend last week at No. 37.

Closing this week for Paramount Pictures, “Sherlock Gnomes,” which just hit home video, fails to domestically reach its $59 million production budget by a $28.5 million difference, while “Action Point,” which only saw two weeks of theatrical release and falls short of its production budget by $13.9 million. After 18 weeks on the Top 25 list and having been available on home video for over a month now, Marvel’s “Black Panther” finally dips off the list, but with an almost $700 million domestic return, it definitely did its job. “Believer,” “I Feel Pretty,” “Ready Player One,” and “Show Dogs” all fell off the list as well.

The per theater average winner this weekend also happened to be “Incredibles 2” with an average of $41,426 per 4,410 theaters. The runner-up, which did not make the list, was the Natalie Portman narrated documentary “Eating Animals,” with an average of $17,262 in two theaters. The third runner-up, which did make the list, was documentary “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” which made an average of 10,445 on 96 screens. “A Wrinkle In Time” takes the highest percentage increase, with a whopping +1,551.4% increase, while the biggest percentage decrease, as on the Top 25 list, was comedy “Life Of The Party” which took a -79.3% drop. Speaking of drops, nine films on the Top 25 took a dip of five spots or more, including the aforementioned “Life Of The Party” and “A Quiet Place,” which both fell eight spots and “Breaking In,” which fell nine.

Next week, “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” will likely take the top spot, bumping “Incredibles 2” to second place. Any number of films toward the bottom of the list could drop off, including “Hearts Beat Loud,” which won’t have the Father’s Day weekend helping it or “American Animals,” which has barely been hanging on to the Top 25 for the last two weeks. Also, “Rampage” has nearly run its course and with another monster flick hitting theaters, that could easily take its small remaining audience.
