In a quiet week amongst the Oscar season, Disney’s “Ralph Breaks the Internet” held strong at the Number One spot with $25.5 million. The real competition ended up taking place in the second and third spots, where Illumination’s “The Grinch” was able to overcome “Creed II” earning $17.9 million over the $16.6 million of the latter. “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and “Instant Family” all held their positions from last week. One of the only two newcomers of the week, “The Possession Of Hannah Grace” finished at Number Seven with $6.4 million, but on a production budget of $9.5 million, that’s actually not bad. The other newcomer sneaked onto the List, as no one had heard of the film “2.0,” which opened to $2.7 million and shows just how large of an audience those Bollywood films incur. “The Favourite” earned both the POPCORN AWARD, earning an average of $31,538 in 34 theaters, and the GOLDEN PERCENTAGE AWARD, taking a +153.8% increase, the biggest within the List, and jumping five spots, adding another $1 million to its total as it continues to roll out.
Sony’s “The Girl In The Spider’s Web” followed up last week’s BOMB by BOMBing itself right off the List, dropping -75.4% and ten spots to Number 31 and closing its Top 25 tenure with a fairly big deficit and owning the biggest decrease within the List. “Maria By Callas” also fell off the list, but a late entry Fathom Event presentation of “Pokemon the Movie: The Power of Us” technically bumped it off the List last week. Everything took a small step down, as only two new films looked for room on the List, with Jason Reitman’s “The Front Runner” being the only film to take a five spot decrease. The Willem Dafoe-led “At Eternity’s Gate” held on to its Number 24 spot from last week (technically Number 25 since the aforementioned “Pokemon the Movie: The Power of Us” was a spot ahead of it when its numbers finally came in).
Continuing the quiet before the Christmas storm, next weekend should see many of the same players in the Top Ten. New releases in Focus Features’ “Mary Queen Of Scots” featuring Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie, Neon’s “Vox Lux” starring Natalie Portman and Jude Law, and Roadside Attractions’ “Ben Is Back” featuring Julia Roberts and Lucas Hedges, all of which could have awards season repercussions, so for that, expect to see them land somewhere on the List depending how many theaters they hit. Also, Universal is re-releasing “Schindler’s List” in 1,000 theaters, so with those numbers, I would definitely expect to see that hit the List as well. If those four films crack the Top 25, expect “At Eternity’s Gate” and “The Front Runner” to meet the end of their short runs, both of which are also long shot Oscar hopefuls. “Beautiful Boy” barely made it to Number 25 this week, so that Oscar contender will also probably fall off next weekend. With a home video release imminent, “Smallfoot” could also see the end of its run, facing competition from the upcoming “Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse,” its days are numbered anyway. Lastly, after nine weeks, “The Hate U Give” may also see the end of its Top 25 run next weekend as well.
