With early morning estimates placing “Joker” ahead of “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil,” the tide turned slightly, with the actuals showing “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” as the Queen of the Box Office for the second straight weekend. Earning another $19.3 million, “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” edged out “Joker,” which has officially become the highest grossing R-rated feature film of all-time, by only $100,000, as it earned $19.2 million. “Countdown” opened slightly below its projections, earning $8.8 million on a $10 million and was still able to clinch a spot in the Top Five. Just missing the Top Five was fellow new release “Black and Blue,” which opened slightly higher than its $7.5 million projection with a debut of $8.3 million. Other debuts included “The Current War,” which earned $2.6 million, “Western Stars,” which earned $1 million, and “Housefull 4,” “Jesus Is King,” the Fathom Events re-release of “Spirited Away,” and “One Piece: Stampede,” all of which debuted under $1 million.
Earning the POPCORN AWARD for the second straight week was “Jojo Rabbit,” which moved up three spots and earned an average of $18,983 in 55 theaters. Earning the GOLDEN PERCENTAGE AWARD was Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood,” which got re-released this weekend with extra footage and increased by +746.5% and earned itself a ROCKET by jumping up twelve spots. Also moving up the List was “The Addams Family” (2019) which edged out “Zombieland: Double Tap” to take third place. “The Lighthouse” jumped up eight spots to land at #8. “Judy,” “Hustlers,” “It: Chapter Two,” and “Pain and Glory” all fell five or spots while “Ad Astra” earned itself a BOMB by falling twelve spots to #25. Falling off the List completely, as expected, were “Dora and the Lost City of Gold,” “Good Boys,” and “Angel Has Fallen.” Joining them was “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice,” “Jexi,” “The Lion King” (2019), which just hit home video last week, “The Captain,” “The Peanut Butter Falcon,” and “Rambo: Last Blood.”
Next weekend, “Terminator: Dark Fate” will upend “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil,” looking for an opening of $38 million, easily putting it at #1. The animated feature “Arctic Dogs” will try and earn $6 million while “Motherless Brooklyn” will try and make $4 million. Focus Features’ “Harriet” should also make a mark, but no projections were available for that one. Making room for these films will be “Ad Astra,” coming off the BOMB and the #25 position. The Fathom Events “Spirited Away” is likely only screening the one weekend, so that, too, should fall off. “Pain and Glory” should continue its dive while “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood” and “Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark” should battle it out for that last position.
