PAIN AND GLORY

Antonio Banderas

Salvador Mallo, a renowned film director in physical decline, revisits his past: his childhood with his mother, his first desire, his first adult love and breakup, and the early discovery of cinema.

UNLIKELY
Joaquin Phoenix all but has this category locked up and, if he doesn’t, Adam Driver seems to be the likely contender to upset. The experts place Antonio Banderas right in the middle, so he’s still in the conversation, but chances still aren’t great. The fact that he got a nomination from a performance in an international film that hasn’t even had much support is an accomplishment in and of itself.

POSSIBLE
Just like Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best International Feature Film is basically locked as well, with “Parasite” being the absolute favorite, not only here but everywhere, so much so that it could translate into a Best Picture win. There’s no way there will be an upset but if by some miracle there is, I guess “Pain and Glory” would likely be the next in line.
