Before the buzz had even died on the Golden Globe nominations from yesterday, the Screen Actors Guild announced their nominees this morning. Many of the same nominees carried over from the Globes. And many of the “mistakes” that the Hollywood Foreign Press were accused of were rectified by SAG. However, some new problems might have been raised.
One of those problems is likely to be Amy Adams getting a nomination for “Hillbilly Elegy,” as the film was critically panned. I warn those who push against this one because the Academy adores Adams. Paul Raci missing a nomination for his supporting role in “Sound of Metal” is another sore spot for many fans. When Raci started winning critics awards, I had a gut feeling that this would be one performance that just wouldn’t make it to an Oscar nomination. It had nothing to do with his performance, which was stellar, but rather the way Academy voters usually leaned. I think the outrage will be less because of Raci’s snub and more because Jared Leto is nominated for his role in “The Little Things.” Once again, I will remind you, the Academy usually rallies behind Leto. He has an Oscar already.
One more snub that no one can get past is Delroy Lindo for his performance in “Da 5 Bloods.” It’s easy, now, to say I saw this and Raci’s snubs coming. But I should have said something a few months ago when I had the thought. There’s something about both “Sound of Metal” and “Da 5 Bloods” that doesn’t scream Oscar-fodder (and that’s not a bad thing). One gut feeling I got wrong was Maria Bakalova getting nominated for “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.” Even though she’s been dominant in the critics’ awards, I didn’t believe she would be able to pull off an Oscar nomination. Still, with both Golden Globe and Screen Actor Guild nominations, all signs point to her getting one.
Represented nicely were “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” and “Minari” (finally!). Some personal surprises include Helena Zengel getting nominations from both HFP and SAG for her role in “News of the World.” An Oscar nomination for her would follow Hailee Steinfeld’s footsteps getting nominated for her role in “True Grit.” I am ecstatic to see Chadwick Boseman get the double nomination (come on, Academy) and Daniel Kaluuya getting in for “Judas and the Messiah.”
On the television end, “Schitt’s Creek,” “Ozark,” and “The Crown” were the heavy-hitters. SAG honored all four central cast members of “Schitt’s Creek” with acting nominations and the series getting in for Ensemble cast. “The Flight Attendant,” “The Undoing,” and “The Queen’s Gambit” followed up their Golden Globe nominations with plenty more from SAG. “Bridgerton” and “Dead To Me” joined the party as well. In my humble opinion, “The Queen’s Gambit” cannot win enough awards.
The 27th Screen Actors Guild Awards will take place on April 4, 2021.
