In a hybrid setting between two venues, one in New York and one in Los Angeles, and a virtual environment of Zoom calls in all the nominees’ houses, the 78th annual Golden Globe Awards commenced. With no real red carpet moments, the stars turned out on Instagram to show off their latest award fashion. The actual audience of the show was made of masked frontline workers dressed to the nines. Amy Poehler and Tina Fey took the stage to highlight this extraordinary moment while also injecting their comedic styling. One of the hot topics in the room was the recent backlash that the Hollywood Foreign Press received with the revelation that none of their 80+ members are black. Sacha Baron Cohen started one of his speeches with “thank you to the all-white Hollywood Foreign Press.” Fey and Poehler even opened their monologue with a jab at them. The top members of the group even took the stage at one point and vowed to better. But, everyone’s sorrier after they get caught.

The night’s big winners included the Sacha Baron Cohen, who won for both his performance and producing of “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.” Unfortunately, the film’s true breakout star, supporting actress Maria Bakalova, lost in that category to Jodie Foster. “Soul” was able to take a pair of awards while “Minari” was the Foreign Language Film winner. Inclusion was on full display in the Feature categories. Daniel Kaluuya started off the night winning Best Supporting Actor for his role in “Judas and the Black Messiah.” Chadwick Boseman won posthumously for his leading dramatic turn in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” His widow Taylor Simone Ledward accepted the award virtually and offered some genuinely inspirational words in his honor. Andra Day even surprised, winning for her performance in “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” which now pretty much assures her an Oscar nomination. To top off the night, “Nomadland” ended up winning Best Drama Motion Picture, and Chloé Zhao continued her impressive awards season with a Best Director win.

It wasn’t “Schitt’s Creek” reigning supreme in the television categories like so many had predicted. Instead, “The Crown” swept almost everywhere it could. Emma Corrin, Josh O’Connor, and Gillian Anderson won acting awards, while the series itself won Best Drama Television Series. “Schitt’s Creek” was able to win Best Comedy Television Series along with Catherine O’Hara winning Best Actress in a Comedy Series. Both the Levy men missed out as Jason Sudeikis and John Boyega won in their categories. In the Limited Series category, “The Queen’s Gambit” won with Anya Taylor-Joy winning for Best Actress in a Limited Series.
