OVER THE MOON
BEST ANIMATED FEATURE
Fueled with determination and a passion for science, a bright young girl builds a rocket ship to the moon to prove the existence of a legendary Moon Goddess.
Glen Keane, Gennie Rim and Peilin Chou
“Over The Moon” getting nominated for Best Animated Feature is not a surprise. The surprise came when the film’s main song, “Rocket to the Moon,” was not selected. In a category with several expendable nominees, how could they overlook the best part of “Over The Moon?” With solid animation and a strong sense of character and nationality, the film does an excellent job of rivaling Pixar. The introduction and build-up of Fei Fei losing her mother and then engineering a way to get to the moon is animation filmmaking at its best. However, once she gets to the moon, the entire film derails with odd side characters and nothing much of substance. Even a commendable voice cast, including John Cho and Ken Jeong, can’t save the movie.
Having not seen “A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmegeddon,” I cannot precisely place “Over The Moon” at the bottom of the pack. But I do know both Pixar films, and “Wolfwalkers” have a better chance of winning. And let’s be honest, nothing is going to beat “Soul.”
