ONE NIGHT IN MIAMI…

BEST ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
BEST MUSIC (ORIGINAL SONG)
BEST WRITING (ADAPTED SCREENPLAY)

A fictional account of one incredible night in 1964, when four icons of activism, sports and music – Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown and Sam Cooke – gathered, discussing their roles in the civil rights movement and cultural upheaval of the ’60s.

Leslie Odom, Jr.

At the height of his celebrity, Sam Cooke still faces racism when on stage at places like the Copa Cabana. Spending a night with his friends Cassius Clay, Malcolm X, and Jim Brown in a hotel room, they engage in debates about faith, purpose, and responsibility as black men in a place of power.

If Daniel Kaluuya was to lose Best Actor in a Supporting Role to anyone, I think it would be Leslie Odom Jr and his portrayal of musician Sam Cooke. He not only plays the part well, but he sings his songs in the film, as well. I feel like that puts him above a strong performance like Sacha Baron Cohen’s. That said, no one’s beating Kaluuya.

“Speak Now” from “One Night In Miami”
Written by Leslie Odom, Jr. and Sam Ashworth
Performed by Leslie Odom Jr.

“Speak Now” is the song to beat. It’s been winning all over the place, it ties into the film so well, drawing from the discussions the famous men have in their hotel room, and it helps that Leslie Odom Jr is so damn likable. If anything’s going to beat it, I would say the song from “Eurovision” could prove an upset.

“Nomadland” and “The Father” have to be the favorites in the Adapted Screenplay category. After those strong contenders, “One Night In Miami” would likely stand the best chance. The only other film that could throw a wrench into everything is “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” as it won the Writers Guild Award and could end up crashing the Oscars.
