TENET

BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN
BEST VISUAL EFFECTS

After being dismissed from his job, a CIA agent joins a shadowy group of international espionage agents who invert time in an effort to prevent an impending global war that could destroy the planet.

Production Design: Nathan Crowley
Set Decoration: Kathy Lucas

Walking into any Christopher Nolan film, you know the Production Design is going to be exquisite. And this is the case with “Tenet.” The futuristic elements are blended in so plainly that it hardly feels like there’s any production design to speak. But taking a look at pictures of the production design shows why it is one of my favorites in the category. That said, “Mank” has been winning all the set designing awards, and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “The Father” could both make cases for winning the gold as well.

Andrew Jackson, David Lee, Andrew Lockley and Scott Fisher

It’s not even that “Tenet” has the “best” visual effects of the year, but it’s the fact that they are such a part of the film that they hold more weight than the others. The reverse time effects and the “backward” fight were highlights of the year in the cinema, which makes this the strongest contender. Then, looking at the other nominees, none resonate more than “Tenet.”
