Following the economic collapse of the small town of Empire, Nevada, Fern packs her van to explore a life outside conventional society as a modern-day nomad in the American West.

Frances McDormand, Peter Spears, Mollye Asher, Dan Janvey and Chloé Zhao

“Nomadland” is the front-runner in Best Picture. It has been winning all season. It’s biggest competition has to be “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” which was nominated in many of the precursor areas that usually constitute for a Best Picture winner.

Frances McDormand

Fresh from Korea, Soon-Ja finds herself living with her daughter’s family as her son-in-law attempts to start up a farm in rural Arkansas. Constantly reminded by her grandson that she’s not the average grandma, she spends her days watching wrestling, playing cards, and planting minari down by the creek behind their house.

Carey Mulligan and Viola Davis are the front-runners. I would personally pick Vanessa Kirby and Andra Day over France McDormand as well.

Written for the screen by Chloé Zhao

She wasn’t eligible for the Writers Guild, which “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” won. That leaves this category fairly wide open.
