The loss of Chadwick Boseman was immeasurable. The man was a beacon of hope and used his power for good. His turn as “Black Panther” changed superhero movies forever. And the void he left in the franchise almost seemed insurmountable. You’ve got to give Ryan Coogler credit. He wrote a full sequel and had to rework it entirely after Chadwick’s passing. He used the film to help him, and the cast and crew grieve. And it works wonders for the emotion of the film.
Harnessing that grief, Angela Bassett delivers one of the best performances of the year and her career. Wakanda has lost its protector, yet Bassett’s Queen Ramonda stands strong against those who would take advantage. Her speeches at the U.N. and the tribal council meeting are some of the most substantial deliveries to come out of a Marvel movie.
Once again, Coogler has written a villain with admirable justifications for his actions. Namor (Tenoch Huerta Mejína) and his people have remained hidden under the ocean for centuries, living on an unknown deposit of vibranium. With Wakanda shedding light on the power of the mineral, the rest of the world is looking for it. Namor takes this as a sign to go to war with the surface world and asks Shuri (Letitia Wright) and Wakanda to join him. When she turns him down, they begin a war between their two nations.
I love that Kevin Feige and the entire Marvel team are not only leaning into the comic book lore and visuals but making things palatable that seem silly at the outset. Namor flies with wings on his ankles, which seems ridiculous in theory and imagery. But Coogler and his team find a way to make it impressive.
With subplots introducing Riri Williams, aka Ironheart (Dominique Thorne), an MIT student who flies around in an Iron Man suit, and reintroducing Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) and Valentina Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfuss), the film doesn’t even need to put anyone into the Black Panther suit until the third act of the film. Overall, the film overcomes a somewhat lackluster end battle on a ship and nicely regains its footing after losing Chadwick Boseman.
Those who make it to the end credits dry-eyed will undoubtedly succumb to the flashbacks of Boseman from the first “Black Panther” and the Rihanna song playing over the burning bonfire.
