Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures
(Original Song)
“APPLAUSE”
Music and Lyric by Diane Warren
Performed By Sofia Carson

Diane Warren is a force of nature. No matter how unseen a film is, if she writes a song for it, chances are it will get noticed by the Academy. Her 13 Oscar nominations speak for themselves. And this year, Warren was awarded an Honorary Academy Award for her consistent work in film.

This year’s film, plucked from obscurity, is titled “Tell It Like A Woman” and is seven short films weaved into a feature. All directed by and starring women, each short film looks at women from different walks of life navigating the issues in front of them. The film has big names like Jennifer Hudson, Marcia Gay Harden, Eva Longoria, and Cara Delevingne in front of the camera and Catherine Hardwicke (“Twilight”), and Taraji P. Henson (“Empire”) behind it.

Singing the song in the film is “Descendants” star Sofia Carson. A ballad of self-empowerment, the lyrics center on giving “yourself some applause, you deserve it.” Carson’s voice sings the melody beautifully, and if we’re being honest, the song and her performance are the best things to come out of the film.
