Taking on the role of a larger-than-life icon is quite a difficult task for an actor. But anytime they can rise to the occasion and embody that person is cause for celebration. Austin Butler disappears into the role of Elvis Presley to the point where you completely forget you’re watching an actor and genuinely feel like he is the King on the big screen. His voice, his mannerisms, and his look are all magic.

Baz Luhrmann styles the hell out of “Elvis,” with the help of his partner, Catherine Martin. The costumes and sets help recreate that period and act as a time machine for the viewer. Everything screams authenticity. The only thing that doesn’t work is Tom Hanks’ prosthetic makeup. Hanks’ performance generally takes away from most scenes in which he’s involved. The makeup, accent, and perpetual villainous undertones do not match the rest of the experience.

Having not grown up a huge Elvis fan, my expectations for the film were meager. So to persuade me to join the Elvis bandwagon by the end of the film was quite the feat. The best comparison is the Queen biopic, “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which was also a tough sell and ended up winning me. To the point that Rami Malek felt like a better version of Freddie Mercury than the man himself. If “Elvis” was all Austin Butler was known for from here on out, I would consider that a victory for him.
