Ruben Östlund has much to say with his dark comedy, “Triangle Of Sadness.” He stabs at the wealthy and influencers, showing their shallowness and insecurity while on a fancy yacht. His use of irony is the most effective, especially in the “captain’s dinner” scene. The rich people get dressed up and are served a lavish meal, only to vomit and hover over exploding toilets for the remainder of the night. When a handful of people get stranded on an island, the tables get turned, as the crew becomes more valuable than the wealthy patrons.

Östlund’s screenplay only works as well as it does because of the outstanding ensemble cast. Everyone understood the assignment as they played into the absurdity, straight-faced and completely convincing. Harris Dickinson and Charlbi Dean captivate as the leads, two models using the yacht trip as a background for their social media posts. Woody Harrelson plays the eccentric alcoholic captain of the ship who spends most of the voyage unseen in his cabin. Dolly de Leon is the cleaning lady at the center of the power shift once the narrative changes to the land.

The love for “Triangle Of Sadness” has to be from how outside-the-box Östlund takes the story. Also, the social and economic commentary adds a level of enjoyment that doesn’t get spoken very often in such a biting and humorous way. It pokes fun without baiting anyone, toeing the line between pissing off any one group of people.
