Having followed his career for most of my life, I never stopped to ask much about the personal life of Steven Spielberg. So it’s nice that the man behind the camera has finally turned things around on himself and told some of his own stories. It’s one thing for a biopic to come out about an icon’s life, but for that person to cast and direct a film about themselves makes it that much more sincere and authentic. For Spielberg to collaborate with colleagues who have worked with him throughout his career, like having John Williams provide the score and Tony Kushner co-writing the screenplay, makes it a veritable swan song. However, I don’t see Spielberg slowing down anytime soon.

With “The Fabelmans,” Spielberg looks at some of the moments in his life that led him to become one of the greatest directors of all time. From attending his first movie in the theater, fittingly titled “The Greatest Show on Earth,” and wanting to recreate a scene featuring a train with his toy set at home to making films with his family and friends. As spectacular as his career has been, his life was somewhat ordinary. However, he mines certain situations to develop a drama that keeps the film progressing nicely. His relationship with his mother, a family friend (played by Seth Rogen), his great uncle, his first girlfriend, and some bullies lead to touching moments.

Spielberg’s saga isn’t larger than life or bombastic. But showing his humble beginnings opens the door to a younger generation of filmmakers seeing this and realizing they too can achieve greatness if they have the skill and follow their dreams. Spielberg recalls people telling him that his camerawork was just a hobby and, as the viewer, you chuckle, knowing just how wrong they are. And you imagine what life would be like had he never picked up a camera after that again. With his unfathomable body of work, it should be no surprise that Steven Spielberg would create another classic by telling his story.
