To quote one of the best punchlines of the night, the 95th Academy Awards went “off without a hitch. Or at least this time, without Hitch.” Will Smith sat this one out, tweeting: “I guess I’ll watch this year from home.” Jimmy Kimmell nailed the hosting duties, offering relevant and often biting jokes and commentary, with an opening monologue that took jabs at Nicole Kidman’s AMC advertisements, James Cameron and Tom Cruise not being in attendance, and, of course, “the slap.” Playing award winners off stage was nearly non-existent, and there was even time to play clips from the movies, which I had missed the past few years. Despite stating she would not be present to perform, Lady Gaga attended to sing “Hold My Hand” from “Top Gun: Maverick.” Elizabeth Banks even showed up with a person in a bear costume, promoting her latest film, “Cocaine Bear.”
Putting an exclamation point on this awards season, “Everything Everywhere All At Once” won seven awards, including Best Picture, Directing, and Original Screenplay. The film with the closest total was the German film “All Quiet On The Western Front,” which won four, including Best Cinematography and International Feature Film. A24 was the big winner, taking all the acting awards, with three going to “Everything Everywhere All At Once” and one to Brendan Fraser for his performance in “The Whale,” which also won Best Makeup & Hairstyling. Going home empty-handed was “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Elvis,” “The Fablemans,” “Triangle of Sadness,” and “TÁR” despite all having multiple nominations, including Best Picture. “Babylon” was also shut out despite landing as the favorite in Best Original Score and Production Design before the telecast.
