The nominees for the 30th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced this morning by Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani. They didn’t crack the awards season wide open, but they did solidify a few storylines thus far. The Big Three Films continue to represent in all the right places, with “Barbie,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Killers Of The Flower Moon” taking on the most nominations, including Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Perhaps the biggest surprise in that category was that “Poor Things” was missing out while “American Fiction” and “The Color Purple” appeared instead.
Speaking of “American Fiction,” not only did it get the Ensemble nomination, but Jeffrey Wright and Sterling K. Brown were also nominated. In the films that are strong Best Picture contenders for the Oscar that didn’t get nominated for SAG Ensemble, “The Holdovers” and “Maestro” both got a pair of individual nominations. And despite missing Ensemble, “Poor Things” received a pair of nominations, with Mark Ruffalo missing out but Willem Dafoe pulling in. Any “May December” nominations were missing entirely, with Julianna Moore, Natalie Portman, and Charles Melton nowhere to be seen. “Napoleon” was notably absent as well, with Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby not present. Leonardo DiCaprio missing his nomination for “Killers Of The Flower Moon” performance feels like a big one, as does the exlcusion of anything “Anatomy Of A Fall” or “The Zone Of Interest,” specifically Sandra Hüller. The surprise inclusions were the pair of nominations for the “Nyad” actresses Annette Bening and Jodie Foster, and a surprise that I called back in November, Penelope Cruz up for her supporting role in “Ferrari.”
It feels like a two-horse race in all the individual categories, apart from Supporting Actress, as Da’Vine Joy Randolph appears to have shored up that win. Lead Actor Cillian Murphy and Paul Giamatti are the favorites, with Bradley Cooper looking on from the wings. Emma Stone and Lily Gladstone are battling it out for Best Actress, and Robert Downey Jr. is edging out Ryan Gosling for Best Supporting Actor, with the Golden Globes win, but it could still be a tight race to the finish. Whatever wins SAG Ensemble instantly becomes the favorite for the Best Picture Oscar, as they regularly correlate. If I were to guess right now, I’d say “Oppenheimer” is the current favorite.
On the television side of things, many of the same contenders reappeared, with “Abbott Elementary,” “Barry,” “The Bear,” “The Crown,” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” picking up right where they left off last year. Some series that skipped the previous year are coming back more vital than ever, with both “Succession” and “Ted Lasso” having strong representation. The only shocking snub is Jeremy Strong missing out for “Succession,” while Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin, Matthew MacFadyen, and Sarah Snook were all present and accounted for. This year’s newcomers with a strong presence are “The Last Of Us,” grabbing four nominations, and “Beef,” which got three.
