Eight years ago, the first 4K Ultra HD discs were released. We’ve come to expect that most new releases will get released in the format (however, where’s our “Abigail” and “Challengers” 4Ks??). But, over the years, different studios and boutique labels have taken it upon themselves to upgrade older catalog titles. Every month, we collectors get excited about the classic or cult titles getting a new transfer. Having recently done a deep dive on the year 1997, I noticed a ton of films that still needed to be upgraded, so I made a list of 25 favorites and photoshopped some mock-ups of each release.

CON AIR

Touchstone Pictures (Disney | Buena Vista)

115 min • Rated R • Last Release: Jan 08, 2008
Directed by Simon West • Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer
Starring Nicolas Cage, John Cusack and John Malkovich

Official Synopsis: Buckle up for “a pure adrenaline rush!” (SIXTY SECOND PREVIEW) as producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s explosive hit CON AIR detonates on Blu-ray Disc(R). Starring acclaimed actors Nicolas Cage, John Cusack and John Malkovich, this edge-of-your-seat thrill ride soars to new heights in this remarkable format. A prison parolee (Cage) — on his way to freedom — faces impossible odds when the maximum security transport plane he’s on is skyjacked by the ten most vicious criminals in the country.

With the 4K release of Face/Off by Kino Lorber a few years back, “Con Air” is the next Nicolas Cage film we need on the format. The biggest culprit in not releasing new 4K UHDs is Disney. Not only did they shutter their Disney Movie Club, but they’ve given their physical media business to Sony. And, even though they have 20th Century Fox, Hollywood Pictures, and Touchstone Pictures under their wings, they don’t tend to upgrade anything unless a big name like James Cameron gets involved.

L.A. Confidential

20th Century Fox (Disney | Buena Vista)

138 min • Rated R • Last Release: Sep 26, 2017
Directed by Curtis Hanson
Starring Kevin Spacey, Kim Basinger, Guy Pearce, Russell Crowe and Danny DeVito

Official Synopsis: Director Curtis Hanson and a terrific cast serve up a “thrilling tale of police corruption and Hollywood glamour” (Marshall Fine, Gannett Newspapers) in this film based on James Ellroy’s novel. Three cops (Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe, Guy Pearce), a call girl (Kim Basinger), a mysterious millionaire (David Strathairn), a tabloid journalist (Danny DeVito) and the chief of detectives (James Cromwell) fuel a plot rife with mystery, ambition, romance and humor. The film captured ACADEMY AWARDS in 1997 for Best Supporting Actress (Basinger) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Brian Helgeland & Curtis Hanson).

How a big film like “L.A. Confidential,” which won two Oscars and stars Russell Crowe, Kim Basinger, and Guy Pearce, hasn’t been upgraded to 4K UHD is a travesty. Another victim of the 20th Century Fox buy-out, if director Curtis Hanson was around still, you have to wonder if he would have lobbied for the upgrade.*

Mimic

Paramount Pictures

112 min • Rated R • Last Release: Jul 27, 2021
Directed by Guillermo del Toro
Starring Mira Sorvino, Jeremy Northam, Josh Brolin, Charles S. Dutton, Giancarlo Giannini and F. Murray Abraham

Official Synopsis: When a cockroach-spread plague threatens to decimate the child population of New York City, evolutionary biologist Susan Tyler (Mira Sorvino) and her research associates rig up a species of “Judas” bugs and introduce them into the environment, where they will mimic the diseased roaches and infiltrate their grubby habitats. So far so good … until the bugs keep on evolving and learn to mimic their next prey — humans.

With Guillermo del Toro’s other work, like “Crimson Peak” and “Pinocchio,” getting 4K UHD upgrades, he has to be aware of his titles that do not yet have the new transfers. You would think he’d want to get his entire filmography to the format, especially given the beauty in most of his films. “Mimic” was rumored to be on Kino Lorber’s slate, but with no news and no release date, it is still one of my most wanted.

Dante’s Peak

Universal Pictures

108 min • Rated PG-13 • Last Release: Jul 26, 2011
Directed by Roger Donaldson
Starring Pierce Brosnan, Linda Hamilton, and Charles Hallahan

Official Synopsis: Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton star in Dante’s Peak, an action-packed story about the incomparable power of nature and mankind’s unending will to survive. When unusual seismic activity is detected in the charming little Pacific Northwest town of Dante’s Peak, U.S. Geological Survey volcanologist Harry Dalton (Brosnan) is called in to investigate. Certain that a long-dormant volcano is set to erupt and the townspeople are in danger, he convinces Mayor Rachel Wando (Hamilton) to take action. Now the race is on to evacuate the town before it’s too late in this gripping adventure that’s filled with adrenaline-fueled action and spectacular special effects!

Disaster movies deserve 4K upgrades more than most other movie genres. With “Deep Impact” getting a 4K last year, it’s time for “Dante’s Peak,” a cult classic in its own right, to get an upgraded transfer as well.

Flubber

Walt Disney Pictures (Buena Vista)

135 min • Rated PG-13 • Last Release: Jun 16, 1998 (DVD)
Directed by Les Mayfield • Co-Written & Produced by John Hughes
Starring Robin Williams, Marcia Gay Harden, and Christopher McDonald

Official Synopsis: Packed with unmistakable Disney magic, FLUBBER explodes on the screen, fusing adventure, eye-popping visual effects, and the gravity-defying comic genius of Robin Williams. The resulting concoction is a hilarious adventure for all ages. Brilliant but befuddled Professor Phillip Brainard (Williams) is on the brink of inventing a revolutionary energy source and missing his wedding to fiancee Dr. Sara Jean Reynolds (Marcia Gay Harden) — president of financially challenged Medfield College — for the third time! When Phillip experiments with his own big bang theory, a miraculous elastic good — Flubber — emerges, leaving him ecstatic, but unmarried! Phillip and his flying cyber sidekick, Weebo, soon discover that Flubber, applied to anything, enables it to bounce super high and fast. However, many questions remain. Is Flubber good enough to win Sara back, save Medfield from its financial problems, and slip through the hands of the evil financier who is bankrolling the college?

How great would the animated little green blobs in Walt Disney’s “Flubber” look in the 4K format? Featuring the late Robin Williams, it feels like a crime that this film currently only exists on DVD.

Boogie Nights

Warner Bros Pictures

156 min • Rated R • Last Release: Apr 04, 2023 (25-Film Collection)
Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson
Starring Mark Wahlberg, Julianne Moore, Burt Reynolds, Don Cheadle, John C. Reilly, William H. Macy, Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Heather Graham

Official Synopsis: From writer/director P.T. Anderson comes the turbulehnt behind-the-scenes story of an extended family of filmmakers who set out to revolutionize the adult entertainment industry in the seventies. Idealistic producer Jack Horner (Burt Reynolds) has always dreamed of elevating his films into an art form. When he discovers young actor Eddie Adams (Mark Wahlberg), Jack begins to turn his dreams into reality. Under the stage name of Dirk Diggler, Eddie soon gives the adult entertainment world a star the likes of which it has never seen. But the rise to fame has its costs, and soon Dirk finds himself sliding down the slippery slope of sex, drugs and violence. The only question: can he get himself back together before it’s too late?

Paul Thomas Anderson is a prolific enough director, and his films should all be on 4K UHD. “Boogie Nights” was nominated for three Oscars, has an all-star cast including Burt Reynolds, Mark Wahlberg, and Julianne Moore, and Warner Bros is good about upgrading its catalog, so there’s no reason this shouldn’t have an updated release.

Alien Resurrection

20th Century Fox (Disney | Buena Vista)

109 min • Rated R • Last Release: Sep 01, 2020 (6-Film Collection)
Directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet
Starring Sigourney Weaver and Winona Ryder

Official Synopsis: A group of scientists has cloned Lt. Ellen Ripley, along with the alien queen inside her, hoping to breed the ultimate weapon. But the resurrected Ripley is full of surprises for her “creators,” as are the aliens they’ve imprisoned. And soon, a lot more than “all hell” breaks loose. To combat the creatures, Ripley must team up with a band of smugglers, including a mechanic named Call (Ryder), who holds more than a few surprises of her own.

With both “Alien” and Aliens” out on the 4K UHD format, it’s a no-brainer to throw in “Alien: Resurrection” to the conversation. David Fincher’s “Alien³” arguably needs an updated release first, but a nice 4K collection would have been ideal before the release of the new film “Alien: Romulus.”

Tomorrow Never Dies

Warner Bros Pictures

119 min • Rated R • Last Release: Jul 06, 2020
Directed by Roger Spottiswoode
Starring Pierce Brosnan, Jonathan Pryce, Michelle Yeoh, and Teri Hatcher

Official Synopsis: Tomorrow Never Dies is a high-octane account of media power as a lethal weapon when global communications in the wrong hands can literally manufacture the news and even challenge the course of history. Media magnate Elliot Carver wants everyone in the world tuned into his communications network. In order to do this, he must manufacture the news. His motto is “There’s no news like bad news,” He deliberately sets out to start a war and it’s up to James Bond to stop him before he achieves his goal.

Speaking of franchises we need on 4K, the James Bond series is begging for a 4K Box Set. With Daniel Craig’s time finished as 007, it would have been the perfect time to wrap all the previous iterations into a nice bow and then, let the fans move on when they eventually recast the role. With that, the Pierce Brosnan entry “Tomorrow Never Dies” would need a 4K upgrade.

The Game

Universal Pictures (Criterion)

128 min • Rated R • Last Release: Feb 17, 2015
Directed by David Fincher
Starring Michael Douglas, Sean Penn, Deborah Kara Unger and James Rebhorn

Official Synopsis: Despite his large mansion and intimidating bank balance, multimillionaire Nicholas Van Orton is haunted by the childhood memory of his father’s suicide. On the day he reaches the same age his father was when he died, Nicholas receives an unconventional birthday present from his estranged brother Conrad (Sean Penn): an invitation to play a mysterious “game”, the aim and rules of which are kept secret. As the game unfolds, Nicholas suddenly finds himself in a fight for his life, assisted by the enigmatic Christine (Deborah Kara Unger, Crash) but unsure of where to turn and who to trust.

David Fincher is another director who deserves to have his filmography upgraded to 4K. With Criterion having previously released his film “The Game,” you would think they’d be in the market to handle the upgrade.

Speed 2: Cruise Control

20th Century Fox (Disney | Buena Vista)

125 min • Rated PG-13 • Last Release: May 06, 2014
Directed by Jan de Bont
Starring Sandra Bullock, Jason Patric, and Willem Dafoe

Official Synopsis: Hold onto your life-jacket as the rip-roaring sequel to Speed hits the high seas. Sandra Bullock reprises her star-making role as Annie Porter, a young woman expecting to enjoy a relaxing Caribbean vacation with her boyfriend on the world’s most luxurious cruise liner. But their trip to paradise turns deadly when a lunatic computer genius takes over the boat and sets it on a course for destruction. An explosive voyage helmed by daredevil director Jan De Bont (Speed, Twister), Speed 2: Cruise Control rides the wild waves at maximum velocity. Starring Sandra Bullock, Jason Patric, Willem Dafoe, and Temuera Morrison.

It’s been three years since “Speed” was upgraded to the 4K format by Disney, receiving a regular release and a Steelbook. Seeing as “Speed 2: Cruise Control” was released theatrically three years after the original, it would stand to reason that, even though it maybe less liked, the sequel still should get its own 4K release.

Hercules

Walt Disney Pictures (Buena Vista)

93 min • Rated PG • Last Release: Aug 12, 2014
Directed by Ron Clements & John Musker
Starring Tate Donovan, Danny DeVito, James Woods, and Susan Egan

Official Synopsis: Taken from the gods as a newborn, adopted on earth, Hercules becomes an awkward teenage pillar of strength. Trying to fit in, he discovers Zeus is his dad and home is on Mount Olympus – if he can move from “zero” to true hero! Hercules teams with Pegasus, the flying stallion, and Phil – a feisty personal trainer – for the mission. But it’s no walk on Acropolis. He must match wits with Grecian beauty Meg and a comical hothead named Hades, who’s having a devil of a time with his hostile takeover of the Universe. He’s armed with morphing morons Pain and Panic for help, and only Hercules stands in his way!

Despite squandering their 100th anniversary with poorly packaged 4K Steelbooks of some of their titles, Walt Disney should still be upgrading their back catalog, especially their animated classics. “Hercules” is a prime example. A stunning piece of animation, this would look phenomenal on the format, and it is a waste that it remains locked away on their streaming service.

Austin Powers:
INTERNATIONAL MAN OF MYSTERY

Warner Bros Pictures

90 min • Rated PG-13 • Last Release: Nov 13, 2012 (3-Film Collection)
Directed by Jay Roach
Starring Mike Myers, Elizabeth Hurley, Robert Wagner, Seth Green, and Michael York

Official Synopsis: It’s a smashing shagadelic party as Mike Myers (Wayne’s World 1 & 2, So I Married an Axe Murderer) and Elizabeth Hurley (Dangerous Ground) star in a non-stop, hilarious comedy adventure. Frozen in the 60’s, secret agent Austin Powers (Myers) is thawed back into action to once again battle his archenemy Dr. Evil. With his sexy sidekick Ms. Kensington (Hurley), Austin must stop Dr. Evil’s outrageous plot to control the world. But first, this time-warped swinger must get hip quick and discover that there’s no free love in the 90’s! An all-star supporting cast including Michael York, Robert Wagner, Mimi Rogers and Carrie Fisher make Austin Powers a wacky, far-out trip you won’t forget.

The Austin Powers character may no longer be in the zeitgeist, but with comedies like “Can’t Hardly Wait” and “Anchorman” getting 4K transfers, there’s no reason “Austin Power: International Man of Mystery” shouldn’t be getting one as well.

The Edge

20th Century Fox (Disney | Buena Vista)

117 min • Rated R • Last Release: May 11, 2010
Directed by Lee Tamahori
Starring Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin

Official Synopsis: A plane crash in the freezing Alaskan wilderness pits intellectual billionaire Charles Morse (Anthony Hopkins) against self-satisfied fashion photographer Robert Green (Alec Baldwin) in a brutal struggle for survival. Each soon discovers that the greatest danger resides not in nature, but from human fear, treachery, and quite possibly murder.

Releasing a 4K of “The Edge” would be a great way to get eyes back on this lesser-known title. Starring Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin, whose characters get stranded in the Alaskan wilderness fighting off a bear, this would look amazing in the 4K format.

The Devil’s Advocate

Warner Bros Pictures

144 min • Rated R • Last Release: Sep 18, 2012
Directed by Taylor Hackford
Starring Keanu Reeves, Al Pacino, Charlize Theron, and Connie Nielsen

Official Synopsis: Hot-shot defence attorney Kevin Lomax (Keanu Reeves) seems to have landed on his feet when he is poached by an international law firm in New York. Lomax is welcomed by the charismatic John Milton (Al Pacino), who seems to take an especially close interest in his young employee’s career. Meanwhile, Lomax’s wife Mary-Ann (Charlize Theron) suffers a breakdown, believing that she is losing her husband to a dark and powerful force.

A thriller starring Keanu Reeves, Al Pacino, Charlize Theron and still no 4K upgrade? Let’s get moving, Warner Bros.

Amistad

Paramount Pictures

155 min • Rated R • Last Release: May 06, 2014
Directed by Steven Spielberg
Starring Morgan Freeman, Anthony Hopkins, Djimon Hounsou, and Matthew McConaughey

Official Synopsis: This Spielberg-directed exploration into a long-ago episode in African-American history recounts the trial that followed the 1839 rebellion aboard the Spanish slave ship Amistad and captures the complex political maneuverings it set in motion. Filmed in New England and Puerto Rico, the 152-minute drama opens with a pre-credit sequence showing Cinque (Djimon Hounsou) and other Africans in a violent takeover of the Amistad. Captured, they are imprisoned in New England where former slave Theodore Joadson (Morgan Freeman), viewing the rebels as “freedom fighters,” approaches property lawyer Baldwin (Matthew McConaughey), who attempts to prove the Africans were “stolen goods” because they were kidnapped. Former President John Quincy Adams (Anthony Hopkins) is reluctant to become involved, but when the case moves on to the Supreme Court, Adams stirs emotions with a powerful defense.

The fact that any film by Steven Spielberg doesn’t have a 4K release is bewildering. “Amistad” was nominated for four Academy Awards and stars Morgan Freeman, Anthony Hopkins, and Matthew McConaughey. There is no good reason this wasn’t upgraded yet. It would make the perfect new entry in the Paramount Presents line.

Spawn

Warner Bros Pictures

99 min • Rated R • Last Release: Jul 10, 2012
Directed by Mark A.Z. Dippé
Starring Michael Jai White, John Leguizamo, and Martin Sheen

Official Synopsis: An assassin, betrayed and murdered by his boss, receives the chance to return from Hell–if he helps Satan conquer the world as the Spawn. Based on the comic book by Todd McFarlane, this action thriller tells the story of the burnt, scarred, Hellspawn, who keeps performing heroic deeds despite the best efforts of his demon guide and the unattainable temptation to return to his former life.

In an age where IP is king, it’s baffling that Warner Bros hasn’t jumped on the chance to re-release “Spawn” with a 4K transfer. The film is a cult classic, and if it’s not prime for a studio release, a label like Shout Factory or Kino Lorber would do it justice.

Lolita

Lionsgate

121 min • Rated PG-13 • Last Release: Oct 12, 1999 (DVD)
Directed by Adrian Lyne
Starring Dominique Swain, Jeremy Irons, Melanie Griffith, and Frank Langella

Official Synopsis: Jeremy Irons is a remarkable man with a poisonous wound. A memory of a fated childhood love and haunting urge to rediscover it’s lost passion.

The fact that Stanley Kubrick’s “Lolita” doesn’t have a 4K upgrade yet probably kills this idea. But as Lionsgate has released a version of this film before (on DVD, mind you), I could see them doing a brilliant 4K Steelbook with a clear slipcover and some stellar artwork.

Chasing Amy

Paramount Pictures

113 min • Rated R • Last Release: Feb 23, 2021
Directed by Kevin Smith
Starring Ben Affleck, Joey Lauren Adams, Jason Lee, and Jason Mewes

Official Synopsis: Cult comic-book artist Holden falls head-over-heals with fellow artist Alyssa, but for that love to live, he’ll need to contend with her disapproving best friend Banky, her sexuality, and his own misgivings about himself. From award-winning writer/director Kevin Smith, CHASING AMY offers a thoughtful, funny look at how perceptions alter lives, and how obsession and self-doubt skew reality.

Criterion released the DVD version of Kevin Smith’s “Chasing Amy,” but since they haven’t released a Blu-Ray yet, I imagine their license for the film has run out. That leaves things open for Paramount to add the 4K to its Paramount Presents line. I’m curious if any Kevin Smith film exists in the 4K format.

Contact

Warner Bros Pictures

150 min • Rated PG • Last Release: Jan 03, 2012 (3-Film Collection)
Directed by Robert Zemeckis
Starring Jodie Foster, Matthew McConaughey, James Woods, and John Hurt

Official Synopsis: The exciting adventure of the day we make contact with life beyond Earth comes to the screen with a profound sense of wonder and a dazzling visual sweep that extends to the outer reaches of space and the imagination. Jodie Foster is astronomer Ellie Arroway, a woman of science. Matthew McConnaughey is religious scholar Palmer Joss, a man of faith. They’re opposite ends of a spectrum – and sudden players on the world stage as the countdown to humanity’s greatest journey begins. Powerfully, thrillingly and emotionally, Contact connects.

With the Robert Zemeckis film “Here” coming to theaters in 2024, what a great time it would be to put out another one of the director’s films in “Contact.” Not only is it an Oscar-nominated film with Oscar-winning stars like Jodie Foster and Matthew McConaughey, but it has also been over a decade since it got a decent release, so once again, we’re calling on Warner Bros to step to the plate.

G.I. Jane

Walt Disney Pictures (Buena Vista)

125 min • Rated R • Last Release: Apr 03, 2007
Directed by Ridley Scott
Starring Demi Moore, Viggo Mortensen, and Anne Bancroft

Official Synopsis: Demi Moore gives “the performance of her career” (NBC-TV, New York) in director/producer Ridley Scott’s (GLADIATOR) riveting saga of uncompromising courage. Presented for the first time on Blu-ray Disc, this tale of grit and determination is more triumphant than ever in this astonishing format. Moore stars as trailblazer Lieutenant O’Neil, the first woman to earn a place in the elite Navy SEALs. Experience the brutal rigors of training camp — and O’Neil’s endless battles with top military brass and her male Navy SEAL teammates — in hard-hitting, in-your-face 1080p.

“Gladiator II” is poised as one of the biggest titles of the year, and with Ridley Scott at the helm, what a great time to highlight his back catalog of films, including the 1997 film “G.I. Jane,” starring Demi Moore.

The Rainmaker

Paramount Pictures

135 min • Rated PG-13 • Last Release: Sep 26, 2017 (DVD)
Directed by Francis Ford Coppola
Starring Matt Damon, Danny DeVito, Claire Danes, and Jon Voight

Official Synopsis: In Francis Ford Coppola’s filmization of the John Grisham best-seller, Matt Damon plays a young Memphis lawyer who helps a man stricken with leukemia battle a powerful insurance company that has rejected his claims. Danny DeVito is Damon’s resourceful mentor, Claire Danes a battered young wife he helps.

Francis Ford Coppola is all the buzz out of the Cannes Film Festival with his self-financed film “Megalopolis.” Whether you’re looking forward to it or not, Coppola is a director who deserves his work featured in the best possible formats, and as “The Rainmaker” is currently only available on DVD, it seems prime for an upgrade. Featuring plenty of well-known stars, this feels like another perfect title for the Paramount Presents line. Lionsgate recently put out “One From The Heart,” which is much less known than this film.

Kundun

Touchstone Pictures (Kino Lorber)

134 min • Rated PG-13 • Last Release: Oct 29, 2019
Directed by Martin Scorsese
Starring Tenzin Thuthob Tsarong, Gyurme Tethong, and Tulku Jamyang Kunga Tenzin

Official Synopsis: Praised as one of the best films of the year, Kundun is a motion picture masterpiece directed by five-time Academy Award-nominated director Martin Scorsese. It’s the incredible true story of one of the world’s most fascinating leaders – Tibet’s Dalai Lama – and his daring struggle to rule a nation at one of the most challenging times in its history. Powerful told and set against the backdrop of world politics – the films’ release created an international uproar! Featuring a striking, Oscar-nominated score by renowned composer Philip Glass, this extraordinary motion picture has been greeted with both controversy and worldwide acclaim – experience it for yourself!

How easy would it be for Kino Lorber to upgrade one of their previous titles in Martin Scorsese’s “Kundun,” a four-time Academy Award-nominated film with rich red and gold colors that would pop in the format?

Vegas Vacation

Warner Bros Pictures

95 min • Rated PG • Last Release: May 21, 2013
Directed by Stephen Kessler
Starring Chevy Chase, Beverly D’Angelo, Randy Quaid, and Ethan Embry

Official Synopsis: When Clark Griswold puts his mind to something, we soon realize he hasn’t got one. Still, nothing stops him when the vacation bug hits. This time, he’s chosen Las Vegas, the new family entertainment capital of America. Chevy Chase returns as bubbly, bumbling Clark in Vegas Vacation, a jokers-are-wild laugh fest including two other stars from past Vacations. Beverly D’Angelo is back as wife Ellen, doting on the guy she calls “Sparky,” and Randy Quaid again delights as grubby goof ball Cousin Eddie. Ethan Embry (That Thing You Do!) and screen-debuting Marisol Nichols are Griswold teens who love the round-the-clock nightlife, as long as they don’t share it with Mom and Dad! From Seigfried and Roy’s extravaganza to a Hoover Dam tour, from cruising to losing (Wallace Shawn as a shifty blackjack dealer) to amorous crooning (Wayne Newton falls for Ellen), watch Clark try to keep family and wallet together.

National Lampoon’s “Vacation” received a 4K upgrade last year during its 40th anniversary. But please do not tell me we won’t get “Vegas Vacation” in 4K until 2037. One of my favorites of the National Lampoon series, this comedy would look great in 4K.

Jungle 2 Jungle

Walt Disney Pictures (Buena Vista)

105 min • Rated PG • Last Release: Jan 02, 2018
Directed by John Pasquin
Starring Tim Allen, Sam Huntington, and Martin Short

Official Synopsis: America’s favorite entertainer, Tim Allen, is at it again as commodities broker Michael Cromwell, king of the Wall Street jungle. With money, power, and an engagement to a beautiful fashion designer, he has it all. But when Michael travels to the Amazon to finalize the divorce from his first wife — a jungle doctor — she reveals that he also has a blowdart-shooting, giant-spider-carrying, 13-year-old son, Mimi-Siku. Cultures clash when Mimi is entrusted by his tribal chief to bring back fire from the Statue of Liberty.

Since the Disney Movie Club closed its doors, the back catalog of Disney feels buried. With no word about their physical media releases since the announcement that Sony was taking over, you have to wonder how long it will be before we see classics like “Jungle 2 Jungle,” which was a Club Exclusive and now essentially out of print, upgraded to 4K.

Private Parts

Paramount Pictures

110 min • Rated R • Last Release: Sep 15, 2020
Directed by Betty Thomas
Starring Howard Stern, Robin Quivers, and Paul Giamatti

Official Synopsis: The life and career of shock-jock superstar Howard Stern (himself) is recounted from his humble beginnings to his view from the top. Possessing a desire to be an on-air personality since childhood, Stern meanders through the radio world, always with his supportive wife, Alison (Mary McCormack), by his side. Landing a gig in Washington, D.C., Stern meets Robin Quivers (herself), who will become his long-time partner in crime. When the two move to New York, they face the wrath of NBC executives.

I am begging all studios to give us more comedies in 4K. Paramount can help by giving us the Howard Stern film “Private Parts,” which they released on Blu-Ray in 2020 to very little fanfare.

HONORABLE MENTIONS

ABSOLUTE POWER

Warner Bros Pictures

121 min • Rated PG-13 • Last Release: Jun 01, 2010
Directed by Clint Eastwood
Starring Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman, Ed Harris, and Laura Linney

With “American Sniper” getting a 4K upgrade, there’s no reason we can’t get more Clint Eastwood in the format.

Fathers’ Day

Warner Bros Pictures

99 min • Rated PG-13 • Last Release: Sep 10, 1997 (DVD)
Directed by Ivan Reitman
Starring Robin Williams, Billy Crystal, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus

The Ivan Reitman film “Fathers’ Day,” starring Robin Williams and Billy Crystal, only exists on DVD. You’re telling me people wouldn’t buy this if Warner Bros released it?

Fools Rush In

Sony Pictures

109 min • Rated PG-13 • Last Release: Feb 24, 1998 (DVD)
Directed by Andy Tennant
Starring Matthew Perry and Salma Hayek

With the passing of Matthew Perry last year, we deserve more of his films upgraded to 4K.

Hard Eight

Sony Pictures

101 min • Rated R • Last Release: Oct 05, 1999 (DVD)
Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson
Starring Philip Baker Hall, John C. Reilly, Gwyneth Paltrow, Samuel L. Jackson, and Philip Seymour Hoffman

“Hard Eight” is another Paul Thomas Anderson film with a stacked cast that deserves a 4K upgrade, especially because it’s currently only available on DVD.

Selena

Warner Bros Pictures

134 min • Rated PG • Last Release: Apr 04, 2023 (25-Film Collection)
Directed by Gregory Nava
Starring Jennifer Lopez and Edward James Olmos

What anniversary is Warner Bros waiting for to give us “Selena” on 4K?

That Darn Cat

Walt Disney Pictures

89 min • Rated PG • Last Release: May 06, 2003 (DVD)
Directed by Bob Spiers
Starring Christina Ricci, Doug E. Doug, and Dean Jones

“That Darn Cat” is another Disney film only available on DVD.

Trojan War

Warner Bros Pictures

84 min • Rated PG-13 • Last Release: Jul 07, 2010 (DVD)
Directed by George Huang
Starring Will Friedle, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Marley Shelton, and Danny Masterson

I remember watching “Trojan War” on cable whenever it was on. Since the Jennifer Love Hewitt films “Can’t Hardly Wait” and “I Know What You Did Last Summer” just got 4Ks, there has to be a world where this one can get upgraded too. It, too, is only available on DVD.

VOLCANO

20th Century Fox (Disney | Buena Vista)

104 min • Rated PG-13 • Last Release: Oct 01, 2013
Directed by Mick Jackson
Starring Tommy Lee Jones, Anne Heche, Gaby Hoffmann, Don Cheadle, and Keith David

If we wish for a “Dante’s Peak” 4K upgrade, we might as well start praying for a “Volcano” one, as well.

Wild America

Sony Pictures

106 min • Rated PG • Last Release: Jan 28, 2020
Directed by William Dear
Starring Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Devon Sawa, and Scott Bairstow

There are classic films like “Wild America,” that loomed large in our childhood that we cannot let get forgotten.

MOVIES FROM 1997
THAT SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN 4Ks

Anaconda

Columbia Pictures (Mill Creek Entertainment)

89 min • Rated PG-13 • Release: Feb 26, 2024
Directed by Luis Llosa
Starring Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Jon Voight, Eric Stoltz, and Owen Wilson

Mill Creek hasn’t gotten into the 4K game yet, but it would have been an incredible way to enter with “Anaconda” in a 4K Steelbook.

Beverly Hills Ninja

Sony Pictures

88 min • Rated PG-13 • Release: Jun 18, 2024
Directed by Dennis Dugan
Starring Chris Farley and Nicollette Sheridan

Sony puts titles out on 4K all the time. They recently released “Groundhog Day” in a 4K Steelbook. So why wouldn’t they do the same for their “Beverly Hills Ninja” release?

BREAKDOWN

Paramount Pictures

93 min • Rated R • Release: Sep 21, 2021
Directed by Jonathan Mostow
Starring Kurt Russell, J.T. Walsh, and Kathleen Quinlan

“Breakdown” would have been the first 4K release in the Paramount Presents line. Was the studio not ready to upgrade until the following year?

Good Burger

Paramount Pictures

95 min • Rated PG • Release: Jul 19, 2022
Directed by Brian Robbins
Starring Kel Mitchell, Kenan Thompson, Sinbad, and Abe Vigoda

Speaking of Paramount, they are one of the few studios focusing on releasing comedies in the 4K format. “The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie,” a fellow Nickelodeon title, is receiving a 4K upgrade this month, so why skip doing that with their “Good Burger” Steelbook?

JACKIE BROWN

Miramax (Lionsgate)

154 min • Rated R • Last Release: Oct 10, 2023
Directed by Quentin Tarantino
Starring Pam Grier, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Keaton, and Robert De Niro

Lionsgate is the king of 4K Steelbooks. So why not do something big for Quentin Tarantino’s “Jackie Brown,” a release that mostly went unnoticed?
