A QUIET PLACE

I’ve seen enough horror movies to know that when things get quiet, something scary is about to happen. But John Krasinski turns that trope on its head by making a horror movie that’s always quiet. The characters have to stay silent or they’re hunted and killed by these terrifying aliens that can only track sound.

Krasinski not only directs but also stars alongside his wife, Emily Blunt, and they both absolutely nail the facial acting—because there’s barely any spoken dialogue. But the real standout is Millicent Simmonds, who plays their daughter. She’s deaf in real life, and her performance adds so much authenticity and emotion to the story. The concept sounds simple at first—monsters that hunt by sound—but the way the film uses that idea, especially with a protagonist who can’t hear, is honestly brilliant.

You’re watching this family deal with the grief of losing a loved one while also preparing for something that feels like a death sentence in this world: the birth of a baby. It’s tense, emotional, and totally immersive. Krasinski builds a world that feels so rich and lived-in, and by the end, you realize its barely even scratched the surface.
