THE ALABAMA SOLUTION
Friday, February 6, 2026
HBO MAX

Inmates within Alabama’s prison system are subjected to brutality by correctional officers, forced to endure inhumane living conditions, and, when they attempt to speak out, are separated and silenced. The Alabama Solution represents investigative journalism at its most urgent and unflinching. Yes, prison is not meant to be comfortable—but unless someone has been sentenced to life without parole, incarceration is not intended to function as a death sentence. The world this documentary exposes makes it increasingly clear that something systemic—and deeply troubling—is at work.
Modern prison systems operate, in many respects, like corporations, profiting from inmate labor and sustained by federal subsidies. But when work programs begin to resemble forced labor, and state officials appear to turn a blind eye as more inmates leave in body bags—amid allegations of internal cover-ups—the line between punishment and exploitation blurs. The film centers on the family of an incarcerated man who was killed, positioning their pursuit of accountability as the emotional and moral core of the story. Yet at nearly every turn, they are stonewalled, deflected, or denied meaningful transparency.
The documentary’s message is undeniably powerful. I had a visceral reaction to its revelations, particularly in its depiction of a system that appears resistant to reform. That said, stylistically, the film is straightforward—more procedural than cinematic. While its Oscar nomination will undoubtedly bring it a wider audience, it seems unlikely to ultimately win Best Documentary Feature.
In comparison, The Perfect Neighbor offers a similarly sharp indictment of institutional failure—particularly in how systems disadvantage people of color—but does so in a way that has generated greater buzz and sustained awards momentum. HBO Documentary Films continues to demonstrate a strong track record in producing socially urgent nonfiction storytelling, and The Alabama Solution is a worthy addition to that legacy, amplifying voices that might otherwise go unheard.

Incarcerated men defy the odds to expose a cover-up in one of the United States’ deadliest prison systems.
