“Get Out” and “Call Me By Your Name” were the big winners at the 27th Gotham Independent Film Awards, with 3 wins and 2 wins respectively. Although this is not a huge indicator for the Oscars, the upcoming Critics Awards will begin to point the direction and “Get Out” and “Call Me By Your Name” could easily end up on any of those lists. It would be great if James Franco’s win here could launch him into an Oscar nomination. The Academy voted his way once before, for his performance in “127 Hours,” so it would not be crazy to see him nominated. With all the buzz around “Lady Bird” and its unprecedented Rotten Tomatoes score, Saoirse Ronan’s win is not surprising and could also be an indicator of her being launched this year, having also been nominated by the Academy before. These films beat out competitors like “The Florida Project,” “I Tonya,” “The Big Sick,” and “Good Time,” some of which will almost definitely show up on the Critics Year-End Awards which are coming right around the corner.
