With AFI’s top 10 list out this afternoon, we see many of the same films that have been grabbing critics awards, including “The Post,” “Lady Bird,” “Call Me By Your Name,” and “The Florida Project,” which just picked one up this morning from the Detroit film critics. “Get Out,” “The Shape Of Water,” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” are not huge surprises, but finally, we see “Dunkirk” land somewhere important, keeping it in the game. We also get “The Big Sick,” which had yet to win anything from the critics. The one everyone seems excited to see on this list, however, is DC’s “Wonder Woman.” Now we just have to wait and see if the Amazonian princess can turn this buzz into an Oscar nomination. Notably missing from the list is Joe Wright’s “Darkest Hour,” Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Phantom Thread,” Netflix’s “Mudbound,” and Alexander Payne’s “Downsizing,” which might be sealing them out of the Best Picture race this year. Ultimately, it just depends how much the Academy members like and support these films.
Meanwhile, in the television department, HBO and Netflix fight it out both with three nominations, while NBC, Hulu, and FX sneak their best shows in as well. And a special award went to the PBS series “The Vietnam War” by Ken Burns.
