“Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker” held on to the crown this week, with $72.3 million, down almost 60% from last weekend’s debut. “Jumanji: The Next Level” and “Frozen II” were able to hold on to their second and third place spots, with $35.2 million and $16.8 million respectively. The newcomers didn’t show up until fourth and fifth place, with “Little Women” earning only $16.7 million, a bit lower than its $23 million projection. Opening exactly at its projection, however, “Spies In Disguise” earned $13.3 million. Other newcomers included “Ip Man 4: The Finale” opening at #15 with just over $730,000 and Sam Mendes’ “1917” opening at #16 with just over $575,000. It also won the POPCORN AWARD, earning an average of $52,383 in 11 theaters nationwide. Earning the GOLDEN PERCENTAGE AWARD was “Uncut Gems,” shooting up eight spots and increasing +3,866.7%.
“Parasite,” “A Hidden Life,” “Dark Waters,” “Playing With Fire,” and “Midway” all fell five spots or more. Falling off the List were “Last Christmas” and “Honey Boy” after eight weeks, “Harriet” after nine weeks, and “Abominable,” which had a resurgence last week but falls off again this week, having already seen its home video release. “Joker” just missed making the List after 13 weeks.
Fully expect to see “Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker” as the champion next weekend as well, for its third week in a row, as the only wide release in the first weekend of the new year is “The Grudge” (2020), which should only be able to crack about $11 million, putting it somewhere in the top five. “Uncut Gems” might have hit its peak this weekend, but expect to see “1917” continue up the List as it rolls out in more theaters. With not many new releases next weekend, do not expect much to fall off except the bottom films like possibly “Harriet” or “Midway,” which we predicted to fall off last week.
