In a controversial decision, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association has awarded Steve McQueen’s anthology of short films, “Small Axe,” with their Best Picture award. They also awarded the “Small Axe” cinematographer, Shabier Kirchner, with Best Cinematography. Many believed “Nomadland,” which took the Runner-Up spot, would win Best Picture as Chloé Zhao won Best Director. She has now swept all the critics awards thus far. A groundswell of Twitter support accompanied a Best Actress win by Carey Mulligan and her performance from “Promising Young Woman,” which also took Best Screenplay. Twitter is already screaming for her Oscar nomination.
