The Oscar race took one step closer to answering some of our questions Sunday night while leaving us even more puzzled with others. Taking the big Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture award was “The Trial of the Chicago 7.” Not long ago, pundits called Aaron Sorkin’s film the Best Picture front-runner for the Oscars because it had been nominated or won in all the right places. “Nomadland” wasn’t set in this category, so it’s hard to determine where these two films stand right now. A film lacking a Best Picture nomination, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” ended up winning two awards, one for each of its leads. Viola Davis won Outstanding Female Actor while Chadwick Boseman posthumously won for Outstanding Male Actor. You can bet pretty soundly that Boseman will win the Oscar, but the Leading Actress category feels up in the air.

The Outstanding Supporting Male and Female categories land the same way. Daniel Kaluuya was already the favorite in the Best Supporting Actor category, and with this win, he has to be a lock. Meanwhile, Yuh-Jung Youn, a critics darling for Supporting Actress in “Minari” winning, begs whether she will beat Maria Bakalova and Glenn Close for the Oscar. On the television side, “The Crown,” “Ted Lasso,” “The Queen’s Gambit,” and “Schitt’s Creek” continued to clean up the awards, with wins in their respective categories.
