ONWARD

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE

Two brothers seek to conjure a spell that will bring their late father back to life for just one day. To share with him precious moments they have longed for, they race against time for one brother to say hello, and the other goodbye.

“Onward” was one of the last movies I saw in the theater before the pandemic hit. It brought me to tears. The emotional weight the film held, dealing with the loss of a parent and the struggle to get one last day with that parent, was more than enough. Add the epiphany that the youngest brother has, and as a father with two daughters, I was done. I experienced a personal journey through the film, which I did not share with any other animated films. That said, there’s no beating the other Pixar film, “Soul,” which has been the darling of the awards season. “Wolfwalkers” would be the only long-shot upset, so “Onward” lands in the middle, but number one in my heart.
