If we’re sincere, “The Banshees of Inisherin” is the stronger Oscars contender for Best Picture than “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” The latter, although likely more the film we’ll remember more than twenty years from now, is not your typical Academy fair. Remember, “Spotlight” won over “The Revenant” and “Mad Max: Fury Road” in 2015, and “Green Book” won over “Black Panther,” “The Favorite,” and “Roma” in 2018. Also, Martin McDonagh is an Academy favorite. He won for his Live Action Short, “Six Shooter,” in 2006. “In Bruges” got nominated for Original Screenplay in 2009. And “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” was nominated for Best Picture and Original Screenplay in 2018. I have a gut feeling this is going to be his year.
All that said, “The Banshees of Inisherin” was named Greater Western New York Film Critics Association’s Best Picture of the year. Along with that honor, it received awards for Best Director, Actor, Supporting Actress, and Original Screenplay, all of which I can see it getting from the Academy (and more). “Everything Everywhere All At Once” was still represented, winning Best Actress, Supporting Actor, Editing, and Breakthrough Performance.
