After a year off for bad behavior, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association returned with a televised version of their 80th annual Golden Globe Awards, honoring the best of last year’s films and television. Jerrod Carmichael was on hand to host the event and opened the night, sitting on the stage explaining the decision-making behind getting picked as the host. The pull quote on every headline tomorrow will be, “I’m here because I’m Black.” The show mostly went on without a hitch. Almost every acceptance speech got played off by the live pianist Chloe Flowers, plenty of jokes got made at the HFPA’s expense, and Eddie Murphy finished his acceptance of the Cecille B. DeMille award with a Will Smith Oscars slap reference.
The night felt like a Legacy Awards. Throughout the night, many actors, actresses, and directors that have been in the industry for years were honored. The night started with Ke Huy Quan, who has been sweeping the critic group’s awards, winning Best Supporting Actor. His tear-inducing acceptance speech thanked Steven Spielberg, who was sitting in attendance, for giving him his first shot, and the Daniels, for taking the chance on him for “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” The win for his co-star, Michelle Yeoh, felt the same, as she started her speech by simply taking in the moment. She then reminisced on all she’s gotten to do in Hollywood.
Angela Bassett was surprised with a win for Best Supporting Actress in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” As was Jennifer Coolidge, who won for her supporting role in “The White Lotus.” She brought tears to “Lotus” creator Mike White as she declared that her neighbors would actually speak to her now and that she’ll still take any “American Pie” movie that comes her way. Steven Spielberg won Best Director and spoke of the process of telling his own story in “The Fabelmans,” which would also go on to win Best Motion Picture, Drama. Several winners were absent, including Cate Blanchett, Kevin Costner, Amanda Seyfried, and Zendaya. Brendan Fraser, who took a stand against the HFPA, did not win the Best Actor – Drama award, which went to Austin Butler. Colin Farrell won Best Actor – Drama for “The Banshees of Inisherin,” which would win Best Motion Picture – Comedy.
On the television side, “Abbott Elementary” was one of the big winners, with creator and actor Quinta Brunson winning Best Actress – Comedy and accepting the award when the series won Best Television Series- Comedy. Tyler James Williams also won Best Supporting Actor – Television Drama or Comedy. The rest of the television awards were spread out evenly, with “The White Lotus” winning for Best Limited Series, Paul Walter Hauser winning for “Black Bird,” Jeremy Allen White winning for “The Bear,” and Julia Garner winning for the final season of “Ozark.” HBO’s “House of the Dragon” pulled off the upset in the Best Television Series – Drama. Evan Peters won for his role in “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” while the creator of that series, Ryan Muphy, was honored with the Carol Burnett Award.
Despite going twenty minutes over, the ceremony was a return to form. It doesn’t seem like Hollywood has quite let HFPA off the hook for their transgressions, but enough of them were willing to put the drama aside and deliver a much-needed return to form.
