On this Martin Luther King Jr. Day Weekend, the stars took to Santa Monica for the 29th Annual Critics’ Choice Awards, hosted by Chelsea Handler. If I could offer a general critique on her monologue (and Jo Koy’s from the Golden Globes), all the sex and attraction talk feels out of place and cringe. No one tends to like it, especially the people it’s directed at. I look forward to Jimmy Kimmel at the Oscars because I feel he’ll table the sex talk.

Again, the night’s big winner was “Oppenheimer,” although it missed in a few places, including Cillian Murphy losing to Paul Giamatti for his performance in “The Holdovers.” It also missed in Adapted Screenplay, losing to “American Fiction.” Another surprise loss, even in the room, was Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) losing to Emma Stone (“Poor Things”), a situation I don’t see happening at the Oscars. Lily’s win feels too essential, and even Emma didn’t know what she was doing up there. On the television side, “Succession,” “The Bear,” and “Beef” continue their steamrolling of the season.

On the one hand, I commend the ceremony for quickly getting through many awards. Still, unfortunately, it was due to the rapid fire of award winners and calling out multiple winners at one time, something I hope the Oscars never adopt. Chelsea Handler even went so far as to “go rogue,” and invite Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie on stage to accept the award for Best Comedy, despite its winning announcement right before a commercial break, sandwiched between some technical awards. The achievement awards the highlights of the night, with a touching tribute to America Ferrera, who couldn’t be more natural on an awards stage, and the honoring of legend Harrison Ford, who was misty-eyed after the video package and introduction from James Mangold, highlighting his entire career.
